New Kahala lives off its takeout business, but you can sit down and eat there if you don't mind styrofoam plates, plastic utensils, and sodas out of the can (they will give you chopsticks if you ask). The food is prepared fresh, it is very plentiful, and it is spicy, sweet, or salty depending on your dish. Very little of what they serve is bland--so if you like your Chinese food in the big-city fastfood style, this is a good reminder of those fried rice/chop suey house flavors, but with a much more ambitious menu. less

Wonderful Italian food with more of a Mediterranean touch than the heavier fare on the Hill. The desserts are among the best in St. Louis and the gelato goes quick in the seasons they carry it. One of the best outdoor dining areas in town.

You pay too much here for ordinary food. Also, stay away during any major holiday season--these family restaurants on the road are some of the easiest places to share the common cold and flu with other families!

Food clearly plays second fiddle to the bar and it shows in overly-salty dishes made with canned ingredients. They want to keep you ordering drinks to wash down what they are passing off as Mexican food. If you've had good Mexican food anywhere else, this will disappoint. less

I have taken over a hundred guests here over the past ten years, and whether they are from Chicago, St. Louis, New York, or Los Angeles, they have gone away amazed that Chinese food this good is available in southern Illinois. Lunch is very reasonable, and the dinner prices and selections are both pleasant surprises. If there is something you really want and it's not on the menu, just ask. Often they will make a dish just for you if they have the fresh ingredients on hand. If you're someone who likes a good meal in a pleasant atmosphere, there is no better restaurant in Carbondale. less
