Tex Mex restaurants are a dime a dozen here in Texas, especially in the
Bay Area. You can’t turn your head without seeing a restaurant. Hidden
in the corner of a local strip center (103 W Bay Area Blvd, ) Lies Webster’s
best kept Treasure, Dos Mas. With all kind of franchises and big restaurants
names like BJ’s and Jason’s Deli in the area, it’s really easy to miss
this little place. But this little resultant packs one big wallop when
it comes to customer service, taste and value.
I do admit I’ve driven past this little resultant plenty of times, but
last Friday I was so happy when we decided to stop in. We were seated as
soon as we came in the door. The restaurant was not over crowded with
Mexican embellishments you would find in every other restaurant.
The feel was more of stepping into someone’s home. Chips and Homemade
salsa soon followed as did our drink orders. As we read the menu we notice
how cheap the prices were. I didn’t see many plates more then $10.00.
Majority of the dishes ran about $7-$8.00, the selection was un-canning.
So many items to choose from we had a hard time deciding.
We decided to go with a combo plate and Beef Fajita Enchiladas. We were
exquisitely satisfied. The beef fajita enchiladas melted in my mouth,
the meat was so tender and so succulent it felt like paradise. It just
savors in your mouth. The PERFECT Fajita meat! Most restaurant’s rice
and beans are usually nothing to talk about but not here, they tasted
so good, you know it was made fresh just for you. My husband had a combo
plate that consisted of a cheese enchilada, beef taco, tamale, queso,
tostada, rice and beans. Believe it or not my plate cost more then his
did. He savored every little bite. Deliciously, tantalizing every
taste bud, his plate was wiped clean. The portions were perfect, not
too much that you would waste the food, and not too little where you would
go away hungry. It was perfect.
For 7 o’clock on a Friday night, the restaurant was pretty busy, but
that didn’t stop the employees from giving us their undivided attention.
We noticed they also had a happy hour consisting of a .99cent margarita.
We saw a few local patrons kicking back with a margarita and some chips
as they watched the ASTRO’s game on the TV in the corner.
This restaurant is a place you can take the whole family. I’ve certainly
give them two thumbs up. Dos Mas is by far one of my favorite restaurants
in the Bay Area and they will be seeing more of me there. Do not pass this
place by. Stop in and discover for your self Webster’s hidden treasure,
in DOS MAS!

Amid the ocean of Tex-Mex restaurants throughout our area, variety
and uniqueness is a bit tricky to come by. Refried beans are refried
beans. Spanish rice is Spanish rice. There are only so many ways to fill
a taco. And literally dozens of regional establishments tout fajitas
as their signature menu item. What do you expect from a market overflowing
with hundreds of Tex-Mex eateries? Thankfully, the vast majority
of them are quite good. Don't you just love Houston? haha
Well, our subject of review this week is, by no surprise, a legendary
name in Tex-Mex throughout the Houston area. The Pappas Brothers have
been delivering several brands of good food to the Bayou City palate
for well over a quarter century. Their legacy goes back to family patriarch
H.D. Pappas, a Greek immigrant who came to America in 1897 and opened
restaurants throughout Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas. His sons,
Pete and Jim, started out with Pappas Refrigeration, a restaurant
equipment business, before following in their dad's footsteps
in 1976. Today, Pappas Restaurants continues Pete and Jim's tradition
through the leadership of Jim's sons, Harris and Chris Pappas.
That legacy boasts brands in seafood, steaks, Cajun cuisine, barbecue,
and Tex-Mex.
Pappasito's Cantina celebrates 23 years of award-winning Tex-Mex
this coming week. With a menu full of traditional Tex-Mex and wildly
unique flavors, the Pappas Brothers contribution to Mexican cuisine
stands in a class all its own. Tacos, fajitas, flautas, tamales, grilled
items and fresh tortillas are married with exotic sauces, salsas,
peppers, cheeses, and vegetables to send the typical Tex-Mex to the
next level.
While the Pappasito's menu boasts such uniquely flavorful selections
as Mexico City Style Chicken & Rice Soup, the Riviera spicy shrimp
enchiladas Platillo, the Matamoros pork ribs & chicken fajitas
special, and countless other dishes, we went for their trademark "Fajitas
Famosas" to see how they sized up to some of our other fajita favorites.
And, I must say, we were blown away!
Pappasito's Fajitas Famosas are, first and foremost, the most
tender fajitas we have ever eaten, anywhere. Our combination platter
of chicken and beef fajitas dripped with juicy flavor. Our added sides
of sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese came in generous portions.
At first, we were disappointed to find only four fresh tortillas in
our warmer. However, more tortillas were just a request away and that
made every fajita piping hot and fresh! Every side, from the rice to
the beans to the guacamole and pico de gallo, tingled with crisp, homemade
freshness. I just cannot emphasize "fresh" and "flavorful"
enough! This fajita feast greeted our appetites as if we were guests
in a home rich with Tex-Mex cooking tradition.
The restaurant, itself, has a wonderful open-air cantina feel. The
restaurant, on that Saturday noontime hour, was packed. However,
service was extremely prompt and courteous. Our waiter, Rudy, was
a model of professionalism, courtesy, and excellent service. The
level of quality, comfort, and service makes Pappasito's a very
versatile choice for a business luncheon, dinner for two, or a finer
family dinner outing.
Prices at Pappasito's Cantina run noticeably higher than what
you might find at most Tex-Mex restaurants. However, the food quality,
service, and atmosphere wholly justify the extra bite into your wallet.
The average cost of a dinner is still quite easy for most to afford, and
well worth the splurge for those on a tight budget. Be mindful of Pappasito's
specials they tend to run on a regular basis.
