needs to understand the cultural aspect of this fact. Time is
irrelevant to the Navajo. Most of the time the food isn't bad,
just mediocre--that is traditional. It is an acquired taste.
Go with the flow and enjoy something different than what you are
accustomed to in your everyday life. If you want the food, atmosphere,
service, and price (slightly high for what you get--but it is
a tourist venue after all) just stay home--or at least with what
you are most comfortable. The mutton, anywhere on the Rez, to
include this establishment, is very good, and the Navaho's most
traditional meat. Enjoy!

My first taste of Japanese food. I enjoyed the dressing on the
salad so much I learned to make it and serve it at home still.

Wa-a-a-y North of the border. There isn't much to choose from
in Barrow, so Pepe's would not HAVE to be good---but it is, very!

the taste and have been eating it ever since, when I can afford

the dryness of venison. The decor and service complement the
food at this very Alaskan restaurant. (It was also the sight of
my first date with the man I married at the Pumphouse Restaurant's
garden!!!)

It was here I practiced frequently with chopsticks in preparation
for my trip to China where, we were told, there would be no forks.
The wonderful thing is that I learned here, with the help of friendly
waitstaff, how to truly enjoy Chinese food. I still eat Chinese
food only with chopsticks it really does make a difference.

Captain Anderson's Restaurant

Panama City, FL

I have been eating at Captain Anderson's since I was 14 years old--I
am now 52. It has not always been consistently good but it has never
been bad. On average, it is pleasantly situated and well worth
trying.

Located in the middle of nowhere about 9 miles north of West Jefferson,
NC, Shatley Springs Inn is a well known and beloved establishment.
Open only early April thru early November, the sprawling, ramshackle
building contains shops, and several dining rooms with a 19th
century country kitchen atmosphere--long tables and ladderback
chairs, families talking, laughing and loving. Across the front
is a wide porch--no veranda here--containing antiques and comfortable
rocking chairs. Some nights there is music on the porch as well
as in the front dining room. You'll need the rockers to sit a spell
in the mountain air and digest the wonderful vittles--unless,
of course, you happen to have taken a cottage for the weekend.
There are three fishing ponds in which you are welcome to try your
luck. Situated around the main building are several shops selling
crafts and such. But the main attraction is the food--lots of
it, all you can eat, served family style in bowls brought to your
table by friendly, pleasant, local girls and women. The chicken
is probably the best you will have ever tasted--including what
your grandma cooked, and they only serve the breast of the bird.
Country ham, so salty you'll consume a gallon of the wonderful
iced tea, is served with gravy and biscuits. There are bowls of
green beans, cabbage, pinto beans, cole slaw, creamed whole
kernal corn, and fluffy REAL mashed potatoes. There is chow-chow
for the pintos, and to-die-for Garner's strawberry preserves
for the hot biscuits. Dessert is ice cream and your choice of cobbler--apple,
blackberry, strawberry.
Nearby is Healing Springs, an old resort with the spring still
open to the public--and it really works for the rhematism!!

Every year, for the past twenty, my family and I have dined at the
Inn soon after opening and shortly before closing. In between
we have introduced dozens of friends and relatives from the far
reaches of the U.S. to the wonders of Shatley Springs Inn. We hope
you, too, will go and enjoy a most wonderful experience.
