My wife and I had Aushak (leek & scallion filled dumplings), Kabob-E-Murgh (chicken kabob), and Afghani House's Dupiaza (basically a rack of lamb Afghan style). This place seemed to be roughly on par with Kabul, another nearby Afghan restaurant. less

Excellent, very fresh seafood. Most fish are even environmentally correct (see the Seafood Watch list from the Monterey Bay Aquarium). Casual dress. Noisy. Can be crowded sometimes. Good kids menu.

It's dishes are tasty, fresh, and intriguing. <br&g ... more The California Cafe is among the best places we've eaten in the South San Francisco Bay area -- on par our other top favorites such as E&O Trading Company, Straits Cafe, and Sent Sovi. It's dishes are tasty, fresh, and intriguing. <br> We started our dinner on a Saturday evening with an organic salad and a grilled asparagus salad. Both were beautifully presented and delicious. Our entrees were pacific halibut on a bed of wilted greens with Chardonnay sauce and clams and seared sushi grade ahi tuna on a bed of noodles. Both of these were scrumptious as well as attractive. We finished off the evening with a strawberry parfait and tea. The strawberry parfait was excellent but not quite as outstanding as the salads and entrees. <br> This is a good place to go if you are on a diet as their small plate selection is extensive, unusual, and quiet sufficient for a nicely rounded light dinner. Their menu is very creative with categories such as sassy, water, fire, earth... They have a good wine list. The decor and atmosphere was attractive yet relaxed -- you don't feel out of place wearing either shorts with a nice shirt or a suit & tie -- very Californian. The service was very attentive despite being very full that evening. <br> Overall we can highly recommend this restaurant and intend to come back regularly. less

It was good but closed in late 2004 or early 2005. It has been replaced by Boas Restaurant -- an unusual asian fusion Koreann restaurant we visited on 5/21/2005.
Straits Cafe	Palo Alto, CA
We love the Palo Alto location (parking is off of Hansen Ave). They have both interior and exterior seating. For us the food is consistently excellent with some less expensive dishes <10 as well as some more expensive >20. For us the food is consistently excellent with some less expensive dishes <10 as well as some more expensive >20. The Singaporean cuisine includes some Malaysian, Thai, Indian, and Indonesian as well. Service varies sometimes between very good and the waiters are kept a bit too busy to keep an attentive eye on water and other needs. <br> The E&O Trading company in San Jose has a similar blend of excellent Singaporean food. The Spice Island Cafe in Mountain View also has a similar mix but the decor, service, and food quality are not quite as high as E&O and Straits. less
Sardine Factory	Monterey, CA
Excellent food, romantic atmosphere, superb service. Quite expensive as some entrees go into the 70+ range (like an Abalone entree) -- but the Abalone was quite good :-) Excellent selection of appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts, and wines.

Having a bucket of stuff at your table is very handy with kids. The place is very kid friendly and fun. Not all the seafood selections are environmentally correct but there are some that are. less

We had excellent service and superb food both times! <br> On Sunday we had a couple of glasses of wine, Shahi Samosa, Shiva's Royal Greens salad, Tandoori Rack of Lamb, Garlic Naan, and Khatta Meetha Baingan (small tender eggplants stewed in tomato gravy). All of it was excellent but the eggplant was particularly delicious. <br> On Tuesday we had 2 more glasses of wine, Crab Pattice (Goan style crab cake), Bhindi-Do-Piaza (fresh okra stir fried with onions and tomatoes), Shiva's Naan, and Butter Chicken curry. Again all of it was excellent. <br> This restaurant is not quite your traditional Indian restaurant -- it's more an upscale Indian restaurant with a creative California flair. Perhaps the earlier 2 reviewers got hit by startup jitters or something. What we observed was excellent food and pretty good to excellent service. less
