of the New World. His soups are homemade and delicious every time.
I am a fan of his omelettes, too, especially the ones made during
morel mushroom season. I've been ill for a while and haven't
left the house very much, and Dave knows this. Whenever my wife
stops by for coffee, he gives her fresh muffins and soup or his
new pizza dishes, all without charge, so that I can have something
interesting to eat. This is a fine place to eat, run by a very fine
person.

This is one of Charlevoix's fine dining places. Very elegant,
understated, and not cheap. Choose from steaks and salads or
fresh fish from John Cross (a fishery known in this area). The
Grey Gables Inn is the type of restaurant where people dress nicely
to eat. Reservations are often recommended, especially during
the summer. This is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. The
patrons are over 40 and over, so it's not a "hip and happening"
place. Grey Gables offers various specials on days such as Mother's
Day, Easter, etc. A very nice place to dine.

Spacious dining room, good prices for generous portions. Flapjack
offers a "Senior Discount", 10% off the price for
diners over 60. Many older locals come here, too, as Flapjack
also has a "Senior" menu (smaller portions, less
expensive). A good place for breakfast, but also popular at lunch
and dinner. Flapjack stays open until 7 or 8 PM Monday thru Saturday,
and features a Brunch Buffet on Sunday, but they close at 3 PM.
Waitstaff is very personable and efficient and the food is good.
You won't go broke eating here!

This place is located on the Marine Corps Base at Kaneohe, which
I visited in early December 2002. Those wanting to come here need
to have military ID or a good reason to be wanting entry to this
Base. Of course, if you're accompanied by an ID card holder, that's
not a problem. But K Bay's is not exactly sitting on the highway.
Kaneohe takes a bit of getting to, especially the Marine enclave!
Once there, one has to search for the building where K Bay's is
located. For those who haven't caught on yet, the "K" stands for
Kaneohe which the taciturn Marines don't like to pronounce.
K Bay's is packed at lunchtime with military and civilian employees
doing the quick "take out" routine. I found my sweet & sour pork
a little salty, but it's pork, so what the heck. It's quick, very
basic Chinese food but no gourmet dining experience.

It is a good idea to come early because it does get crowded after
7PM and things can get hectic. There are many photos on the wall
of Italian locations where the chef/owner did his training and
where he buys his wines and spirits. Not a cheap place, Il Villa
is still worth the money if one wants to experience authentic
Italian dishes. The portions are quite generous and garlic is
in every dish. The wines are pretty expensive, but excellent
quality. For the purist, there is San Pellegrino mineral water.
There's a daily special featuring a different soup and entree.
The menu is quite extensive. If one wants a pizza, one can get it,
but go to Domino's instead, since it's cheaper. Those wishing
to dine like they did when on vacation in Italy are best served
here. The restaurant closes regularly each year for approximately
3-4 weeks so the chef can return to Italy to learn new dishes and
buy new wines. For a large group, reservations might be recommended.

but I don't understand other reviewers' dissatisfaction. This
is a big old barn where a microbrewery has been set up, and there's
a large bar. The food is basically American with ribs and steaks,
etc. Nothing pretentious or fancy, but it's good. My friends
& had no trouble being seated, although that one lady was right
about uncomfortable chairs. Our waiter was very nice and efficient
and brought our food quickly. He was even training another guy
who was just as helpful. I admit we did visit there after all the
tourists had gone, so maybe that helped as far as quick seating
and friendly staff. I know I'll be in Gaylord again in a couple
of months and if time allows, I'm going back... if nothing else,
for the interesting selection of beers! Have a designated driver
if you go!

Pippins was the very first restaurant I visited when I first returned
from living in Germany. My husband is from the general area and
has a lot of favorites here (which are not always mine, I've found).
This place was pretty good, I must admit. Since Boyne City merchants
often make their main money during tourist season, Pippins shuts
down for part of the winter months. We visited at the end of summer
when it was quiet. The restaurant has its own parking lot, and
there was ample parking. The place is very well lit and has a spacious
feel to it. Personnel there were very outgoing and friendly and
brought us beverages and appetizers very quickly. Pippins serves
mainly American fare, from burgers to steaks. There's also fish
offered, obligatory in Northern Michigan. I had a simple stacked
sandwich which was very tasty, and my husband ate a HUGE salad
which he liked very much. There was also homemade lemonade which
was nice and tart. The coffee was not strong enough for my taste,
but my husband didn't complain. When we were there, there were
only two other people next to us, so smoking was not an issue. I've
always planned to go back, but I've yet to find time. If you're
in Boyne City during the tourist season, by all means, give Pippins
a try.

here about once a week to eat lunch with my contractor. The prices
are reasonable for food and drinks. Service is very fast and the

which is good when I don't have time to eat right there. For people
pressed for time, this is the place to go.

that opens early around 7 a.m. and closes by 8 or 9 p.m. I like to
come here for lunch and hold small business meetings because
there are big tables. Darlene's serves homestyle cooking with
generous portions. They offer take out service as well. Lots
of locals come here to meet, greet and eat and I always see someone
I know, no matter what time I come. Someone French once said that
eating should also be a kind of social event, and it is here. Don't
forget to order the pie for dessert, if you have room.

I came here with my mother while we were killing time during a flight
layover. I thought the food was quite reasonably priced, and
the portions were generous. The service staff was very helpful,
suggesting that my mother (she's 86) take a kid's portion instead
of the regular dinner, which was smaller and also cost less money.
I had spaghetti with a very nice meatball sauce, which is boring
but filling. We came at an off time for the restaurant, as there
were only a few patrons in the place the entire time. Hey, I've
had better Italian food, but I've also had much worse, and in this
place, one gets what one pays for. It hit the spot, didn't cost
the world, and the people were friendly to us. I recommended it
to my sister and her family, all of whom live in Alaska. Even my
mother was pleased, and she's a tough one to satify. If I come to
Alaska again, I'll stop here during a long layover.
