The food is average (for mexican), and the atmosphere is below average. I can't imagine gicing this place 5 stars, unless one believes McDonalds is a 4 or 5 star restaurant.

Their ste ... more When I first moved to San Jose 10 years ago, I really enjoyed this restaurant. They have a "Wisconsin Tavern" kind of feeling, where you order your food from the bar, and then wait in the bar until it's ready, at which time they seat you. Their steak used to be good quality USDA choice, and reminded me of beef in the midwest. Not any more. The last two times I was there, (separated by 2 years) it was so bad I couldn't finish my steak. The salad was chunks of iceberg lettuce, with so much water in the salad bowl the dressing was diluted. The potatoes tasted like they had been half cooked a few days prior, and barely re-heated.The steaks had so much fat and gristle, that over 1/2 the tables were complaining, rather loudly, to an indifferent staff and management. I can't imagine ever going back. less

Their koubideh ( ground hamburger kabobs ), filet kabobs, and boneless chicken kabobs are very good. I usually also get an order of torshi (persian assorted pickles), and yogurt with pepper and cucumber (to dip bread in). They also have a soup/stew that is quite unusual, and slightly sweet. I enjoy it, but don't recall it's name. less

This place is definately a place to avoid. less

The restaurant is small, with a high ceiling. A friend of mine and I went there for lunch today. We had the daily special, which included a lovely salad of butter lettuce, mushrooms, crumbled bacon, and herbs in a light vinagrette. The main course was blue grouper in a white wine demi-glaze with fresh herbs and fresh tomatoes, snow peas (some of the sweetest I've ever tasted, blanched to perfection) and rice. The fish was cooked until it almost flaked, but not quite, the sauce was perfectly executed, it was an excellent meal. The service was outstanding, well executed and casual. The chef/owner came out to great us towards the end of the meal, and was genuinely happy when we complimented his food. We were both delighted to have found this place, and will be back often. Dinners are more expensive, in the $15-$25 dollar range, but well worth it I suspect. less

Their salads are always light yet tasty, their french onion soup is passable, and their crepes are wonderful, plus you have the option of white flour, whole wheat, or buckwheat crepes. My favorite is their beef bourginoin (sp) crepe, its outstanbding, with just the right amount of vegetables, in a savoury sauce. less

Their appetizer plates ( anti-pasto, goat cheese-roasted-garlic- roasted red bell pepper to name some ) are simple in concept, but elegant and delicious. I've never had a disappointing meal in the 10+ times I have eaten at this restaurant. The service is also excellent, and friendly. It is more expensive than your average ma & pa italian place, and that's because it is so far above them. less

Drinks are ok, food is ok (their caesar salad and spicy chicken wings are good), but the management is some of the worst I've ever seen. Once I was there with a friend to have cocktails and horse'- douvres, and we went onto the patio. During that time,.they started shooting for a commercial. For over an hour, no waitress came, and when we tried to leave, a bouncer told us (and other people on the outside patio) that he couldn't allow us to leave since we might "trip" over the wires and cords being used in the recording process. It wasn't until I got the manager to come over, and informed him I would shout over the sides of the balcony for the police that we were allowed to leave. Other customers on the balcony also immediately left. less

The service is slow, but that's because they prepare everything ala' minute, ie, when you order it. less

When I visited Chicago 2 years ago and went there, their ahi appetizer was the best I have ever had, and that includes California where I live, and Hawaii. less
