| Casa Navarro | Dallas, CA | |
|
Blessed re-emergence of long time Dallas favorite El Taxco. The
Navarro family had been an icon of Dallas TexMex food at the corner of
St. Paul and McKinney since 1947. In the early 1980's they took an
offer they couldn't refuse from a developer for the property and tried
(unsuccessfully) to re-establish in another location including the old
Nopalitas on southbound Harry Hines and the upper level of Promenade
Shopping Center in Richardson (both terrible locations). Well since
then, Joe Navarro has unfortunately died but Blanca has opened in a
store front in a small strip. A most unusual location for a TexMex
spot. It seems however, that El Taxco's loyal patrons learned their
lesson and are not going to let this stalwart go away again. Crowds
are heavy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is identical to
the old El Taxco with long time favorites: Navarro and Taxco Specials,
the Mama Navarro and Tropical. The salsa is the original recipe and is
one of the hottest and best in BigD. Lunch specials are a
bargain. Breakfast on Saturday or Sunday is a people watching treat.

| The Eagle Cafe | San Francisco, CA | |
|
The Eagle Cafe still retains its gritty, maritime edge, with
distressed railroad-car siding on the walls, green Formica tables and
assorted seafaring memorabilia from its origins. Before the Eagle
landed on the second level of Pier 39, though, it perched down the
street, serving as a ticket office for the McCormick Steamship
Line. It became a cafe and bar in 1928, and half a century later, when
Pier 39 developers wanted to tear down the historic building to make
way for a parking lot, city officials insisted it be preserved and
incorporated into the new tourist haven.
Despite its legacy as a longshoreman hangout, the management has
recently spiffed up both the food and the ambience. Now, in addition
to hearty helpings of buttermilk pancakes, home fries, burgers and
blue-plate specials, the menu contains a wider assortment of salads
and other health-conscious fare, and the floor and some of the more
tattered furnishings have been replaced. All the food is available to
go, but it would be a shame on sunny days not to eat out on the deck,
with its dramatic view of the bay, Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

| Harrald's | Stormville, NY | |
|
Dinner with Greg Gibson, Sue Bagen, and Peter Ludlow. Harrald's in a
white cottage which reminds of a French country inn, serves a fixed
price menu for a 6 course dinner ($65.) I started with carpaccio of
beef which was tender and had a spicy tarragon vinegarette. Next was
Harrald's salad with real blue cheese crumbled at the table. That was
followed by sorbet and the entre'. I had poached salmon which was
prepared perfectly with a white wine & caper sauce. It was accompanied
by asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. Next came desert which was a
selection (at the table of 6 gorgeous selections. I had the creme
brulee. Finally, a cart was wheeled out with 5 selections of
cheese. We tried a little of each and everyone agreed they had never
tasted cheese as good. Harrald's was definately a 5 star experience in
every way.

| Le Chambord Restaurant & Inn | Hopewell Junction, NY | |
|
Supurb B&B style lodge with genuine 4 star restaurant. Tell them your
working with IBM (Fishkill) and your huge suite style room is only
about $85.00. Continental breakfast (included with room) is the real
thing with fruit, marvelous selection of cheeses and home baked
breads, and selection of cold cuts. Fabulously romantic spot. Don't
miss New Yorks' ONLY 5 star restaurant (Harrald's) just down the road!

| Lone Star Tavern | Waco, CA | |
|
About 1 miles north toward Bellmead on Hwy. 84. Great pan fried steaks
but they had a dispute with their distributor and lost their contract
for (you guessed it) Lone Star beer!

| Nakamoto | Dallas, TX | |
|
Possibly the most authentic Japanese/Sushi bar in
Dallas. Yakitori (grilled items hibachi style) prepared in
front of those seated at the sushi bar. Excellent sushi and
sashimi items. Some of the best miso soup around. I took
three Japanese business associates who were familiar with
most sushi bars in Dallas and they all agreed that this was
the best and most authentic they had been to. On my last
visit, half the patrons were Japanese. That's a good sign at
a Japanese restaurant.

| Zucchini's Cafe | Dallas, TX | |

Go for the Sunday buffet brunch. Not as large or confusing as some
hotel buffets. Omlets, traditional breakfasts, pasta, all
delicious. One of the best eating establishments at the Galleria.

| Landry's | Dallas, TX | |
|
Good Cajun seafood restaurant most would consider excellent if they
haven't been to Pappadeaux. The usual fried & blackened specialties
well prepared and served. Dine outside when the weather permits. Don't
miss the Austin location on Town Lake. Beautiful view.

| Il Sorrento Italian Restaurant | Dallas, TX | |
|
Like a sidewalk cafe in Venice. One of the best atmospheres in Dallas
complete with canals and strolling musicians. Come early and have your
fortune told by the gypsy woman in the comfy & intimate piano
lounge. Bread men keep your plate full with addictive piping hot yeast
rolls. Top notch Caesar salad and escargot a great way to start things
off. Rich Fettucini Alfredo, Italian version of bouillibase,
medallions of beef Giordano, or any of the veal or fish dishes sure to
be a hit. Have the accordian player do his rendition of The Godfather,
Never On Sunday, or Arrivederci Roma.

| India Palace Restaurant & Bar | Dallas, TX | |
|
The best Indian restaurant in Dallas. Pleasant atmosphere. Very
attentive service. Menu a little difficult for those not familiar with
Indian cuisine but the wait staff very helpful. Wonderful Indian
breads including naan and chipati. The Vindaloo dishes are hot enough
to set off a fire alarm!

| Jake's Old Fashion Burger & B | Dallas, TX | |
|
Younger sibling to Keller's hamburgers. Same tasty thin style
burgers. Tater tots a favorite of many. Hot & corn dogs. Vast
quantities of beer consumed on site. When is every other hamburger
joint going to realize how much class poppy seed buns lend to a
hamburger? Kellers & Jakes have know this fact for a long time.

No frills fried seafood is a bargain. Catfish excellent, as are the

that Joe's knows what the people want.

| Keller's Cactus Jack's | Dallas, TX | |
|
Sibling to Keller's drive in restaurants. Same unique burgers with
everything except lettuce. Tasty tater tots. When are all the other
burger joints going to learn what Keller's has known for a long
time-that poppy seed buns add real class to a hamburger. A tremendous
reason NOT to go to McDonald's if you're in the area.
|
||
