| Thai Kitchen | Beaverton, OR | |
|
Excellent Thai food. There are daily dinner specials which are
generally worth trying.
Food is consistently good, ingredients fresh, service is good,
atmosphere pleasant.
I took a friend visiting from NYC and he loved it.
High recommendation!

| Ernesto's Italian Restaurant | Portland, OR | |
|
Ernesto's has REALLY gone downhill during the last several years.
It used to be a traditional standard with great food and friendly
atmosphere. Now it is just a restaurant with mediocre food and
worse service. Too bad!! They need to get Mike back to run things
right.

| Cucina! Cucina! | Portland, OR | |
|
See commentary by MC... this place is worthless.
Just a greedy venal chain, corporate look and feel, blase' food.
And usually crowded, DUH! One visit was enough.

| Dot's Cafe | Portland, OR | |
|
On our first (and only!) visit, we waited what seemed like hours
for our food
after ordering. It wasn't really worth waiting for. OK, the kitchen
staff was
backed up, too busy, short-handed, whatever. It happens. But
the service!
Totally flaky wait-staff. I got the impression they were all
in
some drug-recovery program where they de-program you by removing
ALL social skills.
There are several better food choices on this corner (26th & Clinton).

| Overlook Restaurant Lounge | Portland, OR | |
|
The Overlook is similar to the coffee shops back east. Huge menu,
decent food.
I go often for weekend breakfast and always end up with some form
of biscuits and gravy. Best I've had. Good food, good service,
nice funky atmosphere.

| Old Market Pub & Brewery | Portland, OR | |
|
I think the place is too big, so that wait staff can't keep track
of
the customers. Why else would service be so lousy? Hmmmmm.

| Overlook Family Resterant | Portland, OR | |
|
I love this place! Any given morning or afternoon will find the
Overlook
crowded and bustling. True diner fare, with a Greek bent. Great
breakfasts! Bisquits and gravy are the best!

| Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub | Portland, OR | |
|
Well, it was a while ago, but I was there once, and the bartender
was SO damn rude I decided never to return. It takes only once to
make an irretrieveably bad impression!

| Richie B's | Portland, OR | |
|
Walk into Richie B's, and Richie is right there, touting his fare.
He's
ready and willing to describe his menu, and his enthusiasm adds
flavor to
all his food. It's the best sandwich food west of the Hudson. There's
no one
item to recommend over others, everything is great. Chicken
cutlet, hot
meatball, pastrami, and the Italian sub are all superb. Get a
bag of Wise
potato chips and a Dr. Brown's soda also.
And pizza!! Yes, he's got the New York recipes, best pizza around.
On our
last visit, Richie sat and chatted with us at an outdoor table
while we
watched the 23rd Avenue foot traffic (he's on Kearney, one door
down from
23rd), and forced us to try his daily pizza special: eggplant
and ricotta
cheese on a base of special pizza sauce and cheese. Nice, thin
crust.
Richie himself is the main attraction. Try not to stare at his
buff torso in
a tight black T-shirt. OK, go ahead and stare, he can handle it.
He's right
out there with his New York attitude (no, people, New Yorkers
are NOT
rude!). He's the world's friendliest guy, making every customer
feel like a
close friend.
Anyway, he's open 11-11, seven days. If you don't eat there you're
missing
something very special.

This is authentic New York folks!

| La Fogata | Beaverton, OR | |
|
La Fogata is one of the best all-around Mexican restaurants in
town. Lunch and dinner meals are high quality and satisfying.
The portions are enormous.
My standard favorite is Chili Colorado, but various shrimp and
chicken dishes are also excellent.
Service is spotty. They try, but miss much of the time.
The food is worth it though.
Located toward the back of Canyon Place shopping center.

| Swagat | Beaverton, OR | |
|
Best Indian food in town. Two locations, Beaverton and NW Portland
(21st and Lovejoy).
The place is normally crowded, and a majority of the customers
are Indian..always a good sign.
Start with appetizer and beer. Many entrees on the menu-- chicken,
shrimp, lamb, and lots of veggie options. The tandoori dishes
are excellent. Dinners are available a la carte or full thali
dinner. If you like lots of side dishes, go with the thali dinner,
but a la carte provides a larger main dish. Nan (bread) is served
with most entrees.
Service can be spotty, but generally adequate.
Apparently, Swagat also has several locations on the SF peninsula.

| Robbi's | Portland, OR | |
|
Sports bar. Dining room. Entrees, burgers, pizza, normal bar fare.
A bit overpriced, but the food is "OK", not by any means outstanding.
The problem here is the service. It's awful. Slow, yes, but that's
not so bad. In Portland, slow service is the norm.
The staff has kind of an attitude that defies normal customer
service. It's like they are all extra-stupid,
and the management subscribes to the same magazine.
I used to go there for an occasional dinner. No more.

| La Catalana Restaurant | Portland, OR | |
|
First of all, La Catalana is a SPANISH restaurant, not Mexican.
It's small, intime, simply but nicely decorated. Romantic atmosphere.
The food and service are outstanding. Have an appetizer, a pitcher
of Sangria,
and try the Paella. Follow your repast with a glass of sherry,
and if you have room, dessert.
Make reservations, prepare to have great time, and enjoy!

| Tribeca Grill | New York, NY | |
|
Tribeca Grill used to be very trendy--it's been a while, but I
tend to think it's still hopping. We had reservations on a Saturday
night at 10:00 and stayed until well after 1:00AM, repasting
and drinking in the culture. When a pompous drunk at the next table
looked familiar to me I asked the waitress who he was. She said
"I don't know, but I'll find out." And she did. And so the food...excellent!
Everything fresh, an arrugula and fresh mozzarella salad, gorgeous
steak, downright evil dessert... Presentation, service, ambiance,
all wonderful, and not really all that spendy. Very yuppie, but
cool.

||
| Nonna Emilia Ristorante Itaiana | Beaverton, OR | |
|
Food and prices seem OK, pizza is good. Crowded on weekends.
We ordered a bottle of wine and got one with a twist-off cap!
Will not order wine there again.

| Montage | Portland, OR | |
|
Montage is great... it's probably the "trendiest" place in town,
but that does not detract from its charm. Old, big, and dark, Montage
sits under the Morrison bridge, provides parking, and has the
best attitude a restaurant can have: they want to have happy and
repeat customers. No decaf! No margarine! Only the real stuff
here. The staff works very hard and do a great job. Montage has
a sort-of New York feel, with tables being adjacent and groups
forced to mingle. The food..well, it's good. Cajun specialities,
lots of Mac & Cheese, good chicken and steak entrees, Jumbalaya,
Etofee, salads, etc. It's also open really late, something generally
lacking in Portland. They don't seem to advertise, so the crowds
must be all generated by word-of-mouth. Well, go there, but don't
tell anyone. It's too crowded as it is.

| Henry Ford's Restaurant | Portland, OR | |
|
Henry Ford's has been there forever...I wouln't be surprised
if old Henry the Model T guy dined there himself. But the atmosphere
is a throwback to the 60's..tacky 60's. Well, it does look interesting.
You walk in to a lobby and expect beehive hairdos. The dining room
is downstairs. 60's elegant, which is sort of incongruous anyway.
Well, the food is decent. Not outstanding in any way. And by the
time you've ordered appetizers, meal, coffee, etc, you've spent
a small fortune. There are far better restaurants in town with
better food and lower prices.
The service is good, if a bit condescending.
