King of King Restaurant Oakland, CA
We know SF has a new Chinatown but how many know Oakland has evolved a new Chinatown. This places does reall good dim sum and Chinese BBQ and bakery. Prices are low, typical Oakland. The kitchen seems to have control over all their dim sum. Very good selection and each done with expertise. If you peer into the kitchen, seeing a mob of workers explains the effort required to do all of this. There is a parking lot although small. Street parking isn't bad. This is quite a find in a most humble of neighborhoods. Oh decor, not fancy but comfortable enough.
Chef Edwards Bar-B-Que Oakland, CA
New high-rise construction forced a micro-move on the other side of the street (now at 1915 San Pablo Av). The new place is a great diner theme, all stainless steel and retro. It is my first time. The BBQ blew me away. Meats were sloooow cooked, tender and tasty. The sauces (hot = is exciting hot and mild = got a nice kick). There is a "Piggly Wiggly" meail for under $5 with a side. Someone said this price must've been kept that way for 5 yrs. The owner and staff are "gentle" people as in they remember what kindness still is. The cole slaw is very spicy and rich. Enough for 2. If you want something less exotic, go for the potato salad. 3 cheers for Chef Edwards!
Windy City Pizza San Mateo, CA
I too was very impressed with the thin style crust of a medium sized pizza. On another occasion, I had a large pizza (thin crust) and it was good but not quite as wonderful. The toppings are just great. There are beers on tap. BBQ meats. The owner and staff are wonderful. It is a comfy place to be. Video games. This place likes people and people (at least me) like Windy City.
Lana's Sandwiches Oakland, CA
I think the name Lana has stuck but this is a dish em out Chinese fast food place. I ordred off the board because I didn't want the ready-made food in a bin. My "wor won ton" was actually assembed from smaller bins to the side. Sigh, it was a disappointment to eat pre-fab food.
Avatar's Sausalito, CA
Excellent casual dining. You get creative dishes in a very low key family friendly setting. Not only is the food very good, you can specifiy and taylor order your dishes. I liked the fact that the B&W prints on the wall pay homage to very humble scense from India. It tells me the inspiration for delivering good food and service are rooted in loving kindness. I believe I can taste this. Sublime.
Manivanh Thai Restaurant San Francisco, CA
Granted, the area is very run down. However, don't judge this restaurant by its neighborhood. Manivanh. This is a great little Thai place. The curry dish, the mixed veggie w/ tofu, the #1 rolls, and fried noodle dish were all unique and all tasty. It is 1-1/2 blocks away from SF General Hospital. It was recommended by a physician there. If you are in the area, you've got to try it. Prices are reasonable to boot.
Cafe Italia Davis, CA
The beauty of "smaller" towns, is that you can actually find old-fashoned family restaurants, not a businesses in the business of being a throwback to a family restaurants. It is homey. I ordered the veal parmasean and pasta dinner entree. The taste was very American traditional. Its taste and presentation were like I remember back in the '60s. Flavors not too fresh, somewhat salty, filling, conservative. Perhaps I'll checkc out their breakfast.
Yummy Restaurant Hayward, CA
Chinese food old style! The staff perfers to speak to you in Cantonese but English works. The value is generous. I like to order the Wor Won Ton for lunch. I ask for a little dish of yellow mustard on the side. Yummmy. There is a lunch special menu for inexpensive lunches. The dinners are very reasonable as well. This is a no frills, show down, relax, and mellow out kind of place.
Betelnut Pejiu Wu San Francisco, CA
I was not impressed with the flavors of all dishes. There is an over-reliance of salt and oil to make the food taste flavorful. Betelnut is a fun spot so you can go for a social meal. The best item was the Hefeweizen beer on tap. Some of the dishes come out pretty. It isn't always backed up by good taste.
The Spice Islands Cafe Mountain View, CA
This is a pretty good choice for taking the family out. The food is varied enough so there is something for everyone. Kids loved the breads. We adults liked the curry dishes and other offerings. The place is a bit dark but Okay.
Great River Hayward, CA
Went here for lunch. It is nice that it is home style food. I had the tofu with ground pork. I asked for this "hot" dish to be "very hot". It came back as moderately hot. It was fine.
Los Altos Taqueria Mountain View, CA
Life sometimes isn't fair. How did Mountain View get two, arguably three, great Mexican/Latin America at the corners of Old Middlefield and Rengstorff Av. La Bamba and Los Altos Taqueria, they have the taste, price, and the right feel to hang out and enjoy.
Zarzuela San Francisco, CA
OK, the paella was on the uncooked side, one out of 8 ain't bad. There was plenty of good food at the table. Simple potatoes with slightly spicy sause was great. Noodle seafood dish was excellent. The sangria (fruit juice + wine) was tasty. Sharing food is fun and social. The place has an old lived in feel. Waiters were old-timers to add to the charm. Parking in this neighborhood is a BEAR. Park far away and taxi in or plan to circle for 20-30 min on a weekend evening. Regardless, go and enjoy.
Deedees Indian Restaurant Mountain View, CA
Seven Reasons why you may love this place for Indian food:
1. Down-home cooking 2. A change from the more mainstream Indian buffets where lots of cream and heavy sauces are the norm. 3. You feel welcome to come as you are, even as "the lonely guy" coming in for dinner. 4. I think the dishes tastes just great. Simple food, sometimes not served piping hot but always worth it. 5. Price is very modest. A happy tummy for about $5. 6. It is cool to eat inside a restaurant/grocery store. 7. Great to support a local small business.
Quang Da Restaurant San Jose, CA
Food was good. Authentic but you may have problems ordering if you are not a native. There are no pictures that can clue you in. Guard your paper napkins. You have to ask for more if needed. You can't just poach from an adjacent table. We went there for lunch.
Papa's Restaurant Berkeley, CA
There is a lunch special that gives you a soup and choice of grilled chicken or beef for $6.99. The meal was fine. My plate had plenty of basmati rice, small baked tomato, salad, decent portion of meat. The decor is pretty spartan, a very unassuming place to be sure. I'd go back to this family run place.
Jolly Roger Restaurant Anaheim, CA
Indeed many of the dishes are quite average but I confess the Avo burger and the [included] side of fresh fruit was quite good. It was generous, the avocado was perfect, and the fresh fruit was a great compliment to the burger. The waiter was also very friendly.
Gordo Taqueria Albany, CA
Gordo's is a superstar in driving value to its customers. Great price and highly tasty foods. This is a given as evidenced by the long lines around noontime on weekdays. Did anyone mention that taquerias are great for ordering low-carb.
Peninsula Fountain & Grill Palo Alto, CA
It is great to be in a place that IS history .vs. being a replica of history. Still, you do have to pay today's high P. Alto's prices. What is so strange is that I can image myself back in time paying $.50 for the meal. The breakfast food was fine, not great but fine. They serve premium bread, bacon, etc. to justify the higher prices. The bacon is too salty for my taste. The spinach in the omlette had a nice garlicky flavor which you'd expect in a pricy establishment.
I guess I'm thrilled that there is an old fashoned place to go for breakfast. The food isn't memorable but it's nice to go back in time to a kinder and gentler place.
Denny's Sunnyvale, CA
The menu offering in the 2004 Denny's menu is much less than what I remember a few years back. I had a Chicken Ceasar Salad for dinner. The chicken was not bad at all. We also had a pot roast/mashed potato plate, not bad either. Denny's has its niche, if you want a drop in eatery with no desire for "dining", this is the place. Food was fresh enough, prices fairly valued. Oh, can't beat the location, situated a stone's throw from the exit of Mathilda Av/Hwy 101.
