Interesting and rustic type family restaurant in Twin Peaks,
Predominantly a beef and chicken oriented menu. steaks. ribs,

Casual dining. Prices are about what you would expect. Service

Max and Benny's Restaurant - Deli - Bakery
Brookside Plaza
461 Waukegan Road
Northbrook, IL 60062
This is probably the best (and one of the only) remaining Jewish
delicatessens on Chicago's North Shore (northern suburbs
of Chicago). Nearly everything on the menu is under $10.00 with
an average price of about $8.45
Parking is shared with the rest of the Plaza stores, and is ample.
Restaurant seating is excellent - this is a good sized deli with
an extensive sized dining area and an extensive sized store/deli
area.
It needs the size -- IT IS VERY BUSY.
Service is very good to excellent. Portions are very good. Quality
is outstanding.
All the standard deli fare, plus some unusual items:
1. Vegetarian dishes on the menu for those watching calories,
adopting a vegan diet, etc.
2. Tortilla Pocket Sandwiches
A rather extensive and interesting array of these sandwiches
at $8.95.
3. Good selection of salads.
4. Pizza
5. Breakfasts served anytime.

| Grounds | Murphys, CA | |
|
Interesting cafe located in the trendy town of Murphys.
New cuisine type menu. Everything is pretty unique. This is not
your average coffee and sandwich shop, unless you are a fan of
Wolfgang Puck and neo-health food a-la Good Earth. Service is
fair to good. Food is interesting, but I found nothing on the menu
that I particualrly loved.

| Uncle Chen | Encino, CA | |
|
This is not a terrific Chinese restaurant, nevertheless, it
is one of the best ones in the San Fernando Valley.
South side of Ventura Blvd between Hayvenhurst Ave and Petit
Ave. not far from Jerry's Famous Deli.
Like everything in Encino, parking is limited, but valet is available.
Medium sized restaurant seating. Local delivery is available
as well.
Extremely affordable. Most entrees are under $10 - generally
running from $6.95 to $9.95. Only 1 item on the very extensive
menu is more than $15.00.
Sun - Thurs 11:30 AM - 10 PM
Fri - Sat: 11:30 Am - 11 PM
Dim Sum Brunch is affordable with items running from $2 up, and
a decent (but not extensive) selection of dim sum.
Healthy, no MSG dishes on the menu.
Food is on par with what you can get in West LA, but it is not in the
same standing as Sea Empress in Gardena or Empress Pavilion in
Chinatown.
Good news is that the wait for a table is a lot shorter at Uncle Chen.
Service is very good to outstanding.

| Original Thai Bbq and Restaurant (thai Bbq) | Northridge, CA | |

Small Thai restaurant in Northridge on the east side Reseda Blvd
near Parthenia.
This is part of a chain which has locations on 3rd at Ardmore in
Los Angeles, at n. Western and Maplewood in Los Angeles, on Ventura
Blvd in Sutdio City, on Gellert Blvd in South San Francisco, on
Venice Blvd in Culver City, and on 3rd Street in Las Vegas.
Elmer Dills has reportedly given this chain a good review.
Most entrees and appetizers are under $8.50 here. if you are into
Thai food, there is a lot on the menu to please you.
Sate (Chcken or Beef "Satay") is available as an appetizer
or as a dinner. The peanut sauce was a bit too watery for my own tastes,
but the dish is well prepared and portions are generous.

Service is good to very good.

| Convito Italiano | Wilmette, IL | |

Interesting Italian Store and Restaurant located in Plaza Del
Lago ("No mans Land').
Almost entirely italian cuisine from regions other than Bologna
(ergo, you will NOT find any traditional red meat sauce dishes
"Bolognese" at this place).
Good, but a tad pricey.
Casual coffee shop type dining,
Service is generally very good. Food is average.

| Ernie Jr's Taco House | Los Angeles, CA | |
|
Just average Sonoran Tex-Mex cuisine.
Ernie's is located on West Broadway near the freeway, just
outside of the Eagle Rock area.
it has been around for a long, long time, and it is about as good
as what you would expect at any Mexican restaurant - El Cholos,
Las Hadas, Acapulco, El Torito, etc. The problem is that it is
no better than what you would get elsewhere at roughly the same
price.
Service is good. The Broadway location has acceptable, but somewhat
limited parking.

| Rio Lounge & Grill | Encino, CA | |
|
Pricey but very good Brazilian-Argentinian Steakhouse located
in Encino.
For those of you who have not been to one in Sao Paolo Brazil or perhaps
a closer place such as Yolie's in Las Vegas, NV. You pay a single
price per peson, and waiters come around from the kitchen with
skewered, roasted meats, chicken, etc.
You get a poker chip or salt shaker type of device which has a GREEN
side or a RED side. GREEN side up means "bring me more food
and show me what you've got". RED side up means "give
me a breather or I am full."
Salad, breads and drink are part of the price. Don't fill
up on the bread and salad. They are authentic and good, but the
main courses are far more interesting.

| Chi Chis Pizza | Valencia, CA | |
|
This location is actually in SAUGUS, CA - Zip Code 91350 -- however,
dine.com has no entry for the city of SAUGUS.
This is about the best italian restaurant in the area. Chi-Chis
is a chain of restaurants with other restaurants on on North Sierra
highway in Canyon Country, on Tampa Ave near the Northridge Fashion
Center Mall in Northridge and in Simi Valley on Los Angeles Ave
and Stearns. They also own Lido's Restaurant on Victory
Blvd and Sepulveda Blvd in Van Nuys. Lido's has an identical
menu and pricing.
The saugus-Valencia location is a medium sized restaurant,
with limited but acceptable parking. Upscale, but casual.
Service and food are outstanding at any of the locations. You
get the feeling that the staff enjoys working there, and that
they all like each other.
At Chi-Chi's, you will fell like leaving them a really good
tip -- and you will also still have the money in your pocket to do
so. This place is affordable.
Really good pizzas at this place. Unusually, they put the cheese
on last, and use freshly ground cheese. The pizza crust is excellent,
whether ordered thin or thick (double crust). Pizzas start at
$8.25 for an individual, $10.95 for a medium and $13.95 for a large.
The individual supports a healthy appetitie.
Toppings are scaled in price. Allowing you to pay a fixed price
for 1, 2, 3 or 4 toppings, and a lower price per topping for over
4 items. Extra thick dough is $1, 75 extra.
Italian Style Roast Beef Sandwiches run about $5.65. They are
served on an oven-toasted, sesame seed bakery roll, and they
do not skimp on the meat. It is not a true Chicago Style Italian
Beef, but it is still a very good sandwich and it is as reasonably
close to Chicago Style Italian Beef as you get west of the Mississippi
River.
Meatball and sausage sandwiches are also good, and priced at
$5.65.
The daily All you can eat pasta specials are extremely good. You
can get them with soup or salad, plus a drink for about $8.00 Choice
of pastas, including rotini (springs), spaghetti, linguine,
rigatoni, shells, and a choice of meatless, marinara or meat
sauce. Affordable and extremely good.
Chi-Chi's and Lido's also have the nice touch of having
a curbside service that will deliver take out orders to you in
the parking lot. Very nice touch for people on the go.
Chi-Chi's is terrific. I've been going to the many Chi-Chi's
restaurants since 1970. This is a jewel, and you are going to enjoy
yourself, whether you are doing power business lunches, grabbing
a quick bite or having dinner with the family.

This is about the best italian restaurant in the area. Chi-Chis
is a chain of restaurants with other restaurants on Bouquet Canyon
Road (W. Soledad Canyon Road at Valencia) in Saugus, Tampa Avenue
near the Northridge Fashion Square Mall in Northridge, and Los
Angeles Avenue in Simi Valley. They also own Lido's Restaurant
on Victory Blvd and Sepulveda Blvd in Van Nuys. Lido's has
an identical menu and pricing.
The Canyon Country location is one of the smaller restaurants.
Upscale, but casual.
Service and food are outstanding at any of the locations. You
get the feeling that the staff enjoys working there, and that
they all like each other. At the Northridge location, the Legendary
former Chi-Chi's waitress Gila has her working apron - bedecked
with all sorts of buttons - sealed in a glass frame case and mounted
on the wall. Much as they might display the football jersey of
some retired, legendary football player.
Well, Gila was a terrific waitress, but the staff at Chi-Chi's
and Lido's - regarless of location - are all terrific.
Extra thick dough $1.75 extra. Toppings are scaled in price depending

| Greenhorn Creek Restaurants | Angels Camp, CA | |
|
AKA: CAMPS Restaurant 711 McCauley Ranch Road Angels Camp, CA
95222 209-736-8181
Located at the Greenhorn Creek development, this is a four start
type restaurant in sophistication and price that you can go to
in casual dress. Popular with more wealthy patrons over the age
of 45.
Separate Bistro (with drinks and hors d?eurves), Full bar and
Restaurant ? with separate but equally pricey menus.
I do not, however, feel that the food is particularly wonderful.
I ordered a 20-oz porterhouse, medium, with French Onion Gratinee
and a pricey glass of local red wine from the excellent Kautz Ironstone
Vineyard. $6 per glass for a 1998 Merlot. Bottles on the wine list
running an average of $25 to $35.
Medium proved to be more rare than medium, but the porterhouse
was well presented with mushrooms, twice cooked potatoes in
a potato jacket, and vegetable.
The gratinee soup had the appropriate cheese on top, but no bread
underneath. It had a hearty wined stock base, but the soup was
lukewarm, not hot, and tasted like it had been sitting around
for a while, cooking down and cooling off. Disappointing and
expensive at $5.
Service was excellent. Wine list and full bar are superb, but
the menu is very limited in scope and the food is simply not that
good.
This is a classy, scenic and quiet place to go where you can still
dress casually, but the food is very pricey and just not very good.

| Tallahan's Cafe | Arnold, CA | |
|
Good but not particularly wonderful, new cuisine restaurant
. Eclectic menu of attractively prsented dishes, running from
$10-$20 on average. Service is very good and this restaurant
is one of the better ones in the area, but it is not that good. Located
next to the Blue Coyote, right off Highway 6 in Arnold. Portions
are average to good.

||
| Crusco's | Angels Camp, CA | |
|
Although the staff is good and attentive, the food here is nothing
really special, and a tad pricey for what you get.
Menu rotates. A few unusual lunchtime sandwich items on the menu,
and one or two unusual items on the dinner menu, but none of them
were memorable or really good.
I was prepared for something good, but this restaurant really
let me down. In an attempt to be fair, I revisited the restaurant
for lunch and dinner over a few days. Unfortunately, my opinion
stands. This is a "just OK" restaurant. Nice, quiet ambience,
but nothing special.
Predominantly Northern Italian Cuisine (white sauces instead
of red sauces), although there are items on the menu from other
regions of Italy.
Located close to the Angels Camp Movie Theaters, in Historic
Angels Camp.

| Sun China Restaurant | Murphys, CA | |
|
Tues ? Sun 11 A 9 P
Fri ? Sat 11 A 9:30P
Closed Monday
Just average Chinese food in the trendy downtown section of small
town Murphys, CA.
Very affordable with nearly everything on the menu under $5.95.
Satisfying and acceptable, but nothing unusual or interesting
on the menu. Décor is dilapidated and looks like a Chinese restaurant
from the late 1960s that still has not been face lifted. Old red
naugahide plastic seats taped with red duct tape. Service and
portions are good. Not a lot of tables. Parking is whatever is
available on the street ? just like everything else in downtown
Murphys.
More than acceptable if you are traveling with kids, but nothing
special.

| Columbia City Hotel Restaurant | Columbia, CA | |
|
Upscale restaurant in an antique, historic casual dining setting.
This restaurant is directly affiliated with the Culinary Arts
School at nearby Columbia College.
Entrée prices are around $20-$30. About what you would expect
at a good quality restaurant.
Menu rotates quarterly, but it is always impressive and interesting.
Fall, 2002 menu included interesting items such as:
Sierra Foothills Coq Au Vin ? with Sierra Sangiovese Sauce, vegetables,
Yukon Gold Potato Puree $18.00. Roast Loin of Lamb with organic
black barley $18.00. Filet of Tenderloin with Bleu Cheese Crust
$26.00. Rib Eye ran $21.00 Soups are thick and hearty, but could
have been just a little bit hotter. They arrived warm.
Desserts were equally upscale and interesting:
Pippin Apple Crisp with vanilla bean ice cream $6.50 French Vanilla
crème brulee $6.50.
Service is excellent, and portions are average, but attractively
presented. The Sierra Hills Coq Au Vin I had was excellent.

| Wolf Creek Restaurant | Markleeville, CA | |
|
An absolutely amazing restaurant, that replaced what was basically
a biker?s bar across from the post office in the backwater resort
type town of Markleeville.
This restaurant opened in early October, 2002. It is an elegant
upscale but casual dress restaurant with several separate dining
areas and a full separate bar. The restaurant has chefs from the
San Francisco Bay area, and the ones in Markleeville in my opinion,
can match any good chef I have seen in any city.
The food is no less amazing. A superb and affordable lunch and
dinner menu. Lunch items are all well under $10.00 with most entrees
around $6-$7. Soups vary, but the quality and taste stays extremely
high. I had a potato bisque soup with braised ham chunks. Thick,
hot, and satisfying. A cup, bowl or tureen of this restaurant?s
soups are just what a traveler or vacationer needs on a cold day
or a long highway trip.
The luncheon menu had several interesting sandwiches on it.
The Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich was served on an unusual oval
bakery roll almost half the size of a football. The ham was clearly
fresh roasted and thinly sliced. Nothing out of a package. It
came with choice of soup and (in my instance) a generous pasta
salad serving.
Staff is attentive, friendly, upscale and wonderful. Portions
are generous. This is superb place to go for a quiet dinner with
someone special, a special diner to begin or end a skiing trip
or camping trip, or just a really pleasant and nice dinner on the
road that won?t break your budget.
Highest Recommendation!

Revisited this restaurant, and it is still as great as ever.
Yes, they DO finally have a Shrimp Po'Boy sandwich, and I am glad

August 2000.
Good fun loud restaurant and shrine to Forrest Gump.
Locations in several cities.
