BJ's Restaraunt & Brewery Woodland Hills, CA
Good microbrewery. Very, very bad pizza place.
Stay away from the pizza. It's bad no matter what city or planet it claims to be from. Two of my companions were fron NYC, four from the North Shore of Chicago. All of us agreed that the pizza needed to be sent back. The waitress was good about it.
Fortunately, there are other things on the menu, but neither I nor my companions were pleased with the price or quality of burgers, chicken and steak items. OK not great.
Noisy and crowded, but then again, all the sports bars and microbreweries are like this. BJs has a better menu and more interesting beer than Yankee Doodles, just up the street, but it really could use some improvements in the quality of some dishes.
Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant Coalinga, CA
Up Interstate 5, out in the middle of nowhere, not too far from the cute, sedate little San Joaquin Valley town of Coalinga is the Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant.
This place has been around since the 1930s, and has grown into quite a spectacular restaurant and conference center.
Steak, steak and more steak. Meat dishes and prime ribs are the superb forte of this oasis in the desert, as Harris Ranch supplies top notch beef to many of the better Los Angeles and Bay Area supermarkets and restaurants.
The restaurant is superb, and you can get anything from a really outstanding burger to a thick cut USDA Prime Rib. It does not matter if you eat your lunch or dinner in the "Ranch Kitchen" the bar or the restaurant. The food is prepared in the same superb fashion.
Like Claim Jumper or other ranch style restaurants, expect very large portions of everything. Quite a bargain. Everything is freshly made to order.
Outstanding and attentive service from the waiters and waitresses.
There is also a store which will sell you Harris Ranch Beef at great prices - expertly vacuum packing and dry ice packaging your beef so it will easily and safely make a long return trip by car back down into LA, the Bay Area or San Diego in even the hottest summer weather.
About the only thing I can ding these people on is their lunchtime Corned Beef Sandwich. While the corned beef is in generous portions and quite lean, it is served COLD! Sorry, but no self-respecting lover of deli would eat it this way.
You can't go wrong with anything else on the menu, though. Excellent soups, salads, chicken, turkey and beef dishes.
More than you can possibly eat.

Las Hadas Restaurant & Cantina Northridge, CA
Decent quality Sonoran tex-mex food, at a standard price.
Las Hadas is as good as any of its competitors - El Torito, Acapulco, etc. The problem is that it isn't any better.
Service, however, is very good. They have an extensive and noisy bar area, as well as quiter booths away from the booming bands. Live music and (unfortunately) Karaoke in the bar area, as well as dancing.
Las Hadas does not disappoint, but it is not anything unusual or special. It's a good restaurant with good standard tex-mex food.

San Andreas Brewing Company Hollister, CA
Hard to disagree with my buddy, Dave Mori on this one.
The San Andreas Brewing Company is a really good find out in the middle of a sleeping town of Hollister. Superb home made Root Beer and Sasparilla on tap. Really good beer for those into microbreweries. Very good quality sandwiches and burgers. Stick with the burgers. They seem to go best with the drinks.
Prime Italian Ristorante Northridge, CA
Really excellent New York thin crust pizza, in gourmet and traditional style toppings.
The crust is light, folds perfectly, and crisp. Sausage is fresh and appears to be made locally. Pizza sauce is excellent, and the pizza has just the right amount of cheese.
Pasta dishes, however, are good, but nothing really special. The spaghetti with meat sauce (Bolognese) is a large portion, heavily hit with garlic - but comes off being a little too watery, due to inadequate drainage of the pasta before serving.
This, however, is still an excellent restaurant, popular with the locals, and with occasional live entertainment at dinner to lighten the atmosphere, and certainly worth the short trip.
The restaurant is clean, modernized, out-of-the way (located in a strip mall kitty-corner and behind a gas station on Roscoe Blvd, a ways due west of the Van Nuys Airport. The area fools you a bit, as it is predominantly residential)
When you want to have a quiet pizza dinner with someone special, this is a superb place to go. Very family oriented and casual. Slightly off the beaten path.
Majority of the menu is in the $8 to $10 range. Affordable and good. Pizza, again, is the star attraction here. It's better than anything in the immediate area.
If you're after pasta and sandwiches as well as pizza, however, I would go to Chi-Chi's in Northridge or Lido's on Victory & Sepulveda.

Dakota's Mesquite BBQ Simi Valley, CA
Great casual-to-business dress type restaurant. It is a little hard to find, but worth the trip.
This restaurant is reminiscent of Charley Browns in its 1970s heydays. A good view, classy but not snooty, a good bar, and predominantly BBQ, beef, prime rib and surf and turf dishes.
Not a bad place for a business power lunch/dinner or a get-to-know-you first date.
Garlic rolls are excellent. Soups are thick and hearty. Portions of all dishes are good sized. Service is always good. Expect to drop $20-$45 per person here.
Interestingly enough, they have a drive-up take out booth attached to the outside of the restaurant. A nice touch for those who just want to pick up something impressive for dinner on the way back home or to a hotel.

Buon Gusto Ristorante Mission Hills, CA
Fair quality italian food at a decent price. Mostly northern cuisine, as opposed to Bolognese (meat sauce) dishes. This is a good restaurant, but not a great one. Modern, clean facilities and a very good service staff. Parking can be a little scarce. Located right off the 405 Freeway on Devonshire St. Best bet is the Linguine Bolognese. Again, not great, but good.
Faultline Brewing Company Sunnyvale, CA
Standard microbrewery fare with an atmosphere and ambience transported and cloned from TGI Fridays. Loud, small portions of good food, but a bit expensive.
Jake's Of Sunnyvale Sunnyvale, CA
Mediocre pizza and italian fare in a run down strip mall on Mathilda & Fremont. A Straw Hat/Round Table Wanna Be.
Gumbas Ii Pizzaria Sunnyvale, CA
Sorry, but I can't agree with the other reviewers on this one. Gumbas is pretty bad. Sandwiches are just not good, pasta has way too much garlic, and as far as pizza go - BIG does not equal GOOD.
Korner Deli & Restaurant Los Angeles, CA
Surprisingly good deli on Sepulveda Blvd near LAX. Very good breakfasts. Corned Beef Omelettes are extremely good, as well as the corned beef hash and eggs. Good standard deli fare at a competitive price. Service is very good.
Cafe Santa Monica Santa Monica, CA
Standard coffee shop type fare. Nothing particularly special. Soups and entrees are hot and edible, but that is about all you can say about them.
Morton's Of Chicago$The Steakhouse Las Vegas, NV
Like its Chicago namesake, an expensive but extremely high quality steak house, ported over flawlessly to Las Vegas. A place for power dinners with Convention clients and customers that you want to impress. Atmosphere, decor, food and excellent service.
Emerils New Orleans Fishhouse Las Vegas, NV
Not up to the quality of Emeril's New Orleans restaurants. I am a big fan of Emeril, but this was simply just an expensive seafood restaurant located in the MGM Grand. Perhaps it is harder for them to get a consistent supply of consistently really good and fresh seafood? I have found quality here to be spotty. Sometimes great, sometimes not.
Chevy's Mexican Restaurant Las Vegas, NV
Good and affordable Tex-Mex food from this growing chain of restaurants. I have to admit that I like the fresh tortillas, but a lot of the restaurants like On The Border have these machines now. The atmosphere is good and noisy, the bar area is well stocked. Chevy's is a good standby during conventions when you need to feed a good sized group on a budget.
Gandhi India's Cuisine Las Vegas, NV
Nothing special Indian food, located on Paradise Road between the Las Vegas Convention Center and McCarran Airport. This place isn't quite as bad as the previous reviewers have implied, but it is not four or five star material. Service is not always attentive (sometimes it is good), and the restaurant could be a little cleaner, but almost everything in the delapidated strip mall is a bit seedy.
Justinos Pizza Subs & Wings Las Vegas, NV
Good quality at an affordable price. The pizza and chicken are nothing particularly memorable, but they're hot and fills the stomach. Sandwiches are much better. I still prefer Bono's Beef on Tropicana and Eastern.
Sushi of Naples Long Beach, CA
Very good sushi bar in the Belmont Shores/Long Beach area. Has been a standby for me since 1990. Other Japanese food is not quite as good, but still well worth the price.
Szechwan Chinese Food Lomita, CA
Good, family style restaurant (a small chain in the area) which has been a standby for me going back to 1985. I can't think of any dish on the menu which is not enjoyable and excellent. Service is attentive and prices are comparable to anything else in the area. Parking is ample.
Thai Dishes Manhattan Beach, CA
Acceptably good Thai food from this local chain of restaurants. Parking at this location is extremely difficult, as it is in a strip mall along Sepulveda Blvd which borders the Chevron refinery and a Golf Course. Pad Thai is good, but a bit on the sweet side. Lunch specials served with soup, rice (a bit sticky), and a vegetable eggroll at about a $5 price. Dinner entrees average from $8 to $14. Service is good. Seating is limited, and there is usually a line at lunchtime.
