Find somewhere else, anywhere else, to eat breakfast.
This place looked like it was popular with the locals (parking lot was
full) and everyone was very nice but the food was just bad. Everything
was the cheapest quality and prepared without skill. The coffee was
weak (and a nasty cheap brand to start with), the waffle was barely toasted
even though I asked for extra crisp and it was smothered in vile cheap
margarine. The sausage and bacon were cheap and greasy, the bread was
cheap, the home-fried potatoes were just slopped together and charred
in a pan. We left it all on the plate and skipped breakfast.

| Tresetti's World Caffe | Modesto, CA | |
|
I dined alone here on a Wednesday night and had a lovely time. The place
was busy but not crowded with pretty hip-looking people, many who seemed
to be regulars. I was delighted that the wine list had lots of interesting
choices by the glass and nothing over $7 (they run the wine shop next
door too)! I had a seafood risotto with shrimp, lobster and scallops
that was simply perfect. Service was also simply perfect. I felt completely
at home there.
The location is also terrific right in the heart of downtown Modesto
with lots of cafes, night clubs, bars and a very cozy-looking cigar
lounge called Cheroot!

| Margaritas | Martinez, CA | |
|
This place may have been good once but is barely acceptable now.
Just inside the door you are hit with an overwhelming smell of
mildew. My salad came so wet there was a puddle of water on the plate.
My tostada was piled a good 3 inches high with shredded iceberg
lettuce (I doubt that is authentic Mexican) with just the tiniest
dab of guacamole on top. Again, the lettuce was so wet, the corn
tortilla underneath was completely soggy instead of crisp like
it should be. I ordered more guacamole and was sorry because it
was definitely rotten (i.e. made with bruised and/or rotten
avocados). The tamal, beans and rice were fine but really just
ordinary -- nothing special. They were out of flan. Overall,
a disappointing meal.

| Pear Street Bistro | Pinole, CA | |
|
I have been to Pear Street several times for special meals (birthdays,
etc.) and it is a true gourmet, California cuisine bistro with
very professional servers. If you don't want to drive to
Berkeley, SF or Marin for fine dining you can count on Pear Street
Bistro to deliver the same quality experience right here in WCCC!

| Bull Valley Inn | Port Costa, CA | |
|
This is a lovely, romantic place and the food is always good, sometimes
even great. The service is extemely attentive and personal (they
seem to know all of the patrons even if it is their first visit)and
it makes you feel like a regular. I especially like that they always
have properly prepared escagot, steak, fish and creme brulee
which are my comfortable old favorites. The wine list is not huge
but has a good selection. I have always been able to get a reservation,
even on Christmas Eve.

| The Waterfront | Rodeo, CA | |
|
Jon Smith's review of 7/8/05 is a different place. The Waterfront
in Rodeo is a little dive on San Pablo Bay with a lovely view of the
Tosco refinery. I went there because they advertised new ownership
but the food is just as bad (my lobster was also frozen in the middle!)
and the service was abysmal. It truly was terrible all the way
around.

| Nantucket Fish | Crockett, CA | |
|
This is a very casual, family-style place with good to average
food and average service. I like to go down there for late lunch
or early dinner and watch the sunset. It's nothing special
but a reliable old standby.

| Spenger's Fish Grotto | Berkeley, CA | |
|
I've been going here all my life but I had high hopes that the
remake of this restaurant would turn it into something special
rather than the old family place I used to go. Well, the prices
are upscale but the food is about the same -- bland, ordinary,
nicely presented but nothing special. I have been here at least
a dozen times since the remodel and spent too much for too little.
There are much better places to eat on 4th Street for the price
(if you can get a table). In fact EVERYWHERE you can eat on 4th Street
is better. That's not to say Spenger's is bad, it just
isn't as good as the prices suggest.

| Zachary's Chicago Pizza | Oakland, CA | |
|
I notice that the people who gave less than stellar reviews seem
not to have tried the Spinach and Mushroom deep dish pizza -- the
best thing Zachary's makes. I work at the airport and often
see people taking this pizza home with them because they can't
get it where they live. This is seriously good pizza and it isn't
fair to judge until you've tried it. I LOVE this pizza and
sometimes crave it the way I crave my mother's lasagne. I
always order take-out because I don't fancy rubbing elbows
and rear-ends with college students while I'm eating but
I think I would have loved it when I was 25!

| Deadfish | Crockett, CA | |
|
This is the place to go for crab in the East Bay. Really fresh, ample
portions, expertly prepared, lovely waterfront atmosphere,
good wine list - there is nothing left to be desired. The steaks
are also high quality and all the appetizers and sides are as good
as you would expect for the price but you can find that lots of places
- you will not find better crab anywhere.
<br>
The prices are high but normal for this type of quality food, service,
and atmosphere. I have noticed the stuffy service, which seems
odd considering the solidly middle-class clientele, but I appreciate
their professionalism and dodn't mind the haughtiness
as long as they take good care of me (which they always do).

| O Chame | Berkeley, CA | |
|
This is fine dining, not "cheap eats" so ignore all
those disgruntled dorm-dwellers who think they got ripped off.
I was astounded at the originality and subtlety of the flavors
and found it well worth the price. The portions are small but perfect
and not meant to sustain you all the way through finals. I had a
beef plate that was similar to steak tartare or beef "sushi"
and found it entirely delightful though I was sceptical at first
that I would like it or that it would be enough to satisfy. I was
both satisfied and impressed and will come back whenever I can
get a table.

| Cafe Rouge | Berkeley, CA | |
|
My favorite place for steak. First go to Cody's Books and
get something delicious to read then come here for lunch on a summer
day and have steak frites with a lovely glass of pinot noir and
ascend to heaven. Sure, you'll spend $35 but it will do your
spirit as much good as a spa treatment!

| Pinole Creek Cafe | Pinole, CA | |
|
I had lunch - a nice salmon filet with vegetables, rice, salad
and a glass of wine in the sunroom and it was all very nice. Everything
was prepared properly, service was prompt, and overall it was
very pleasant. I felt the prices were fair for this type of restaurant.

| Tachikawa | Pinole, CA | |
|
This is pretty good for a neighborhood japanese place. In fact,
I don't think you can even get decent sashimi within about
10 miles. It appears to be run by a Japanese family and they take
very good care of you and feed you good food at reasonable prices.

| Embers | Pinole, CA | |
|
I almost ate here but got turned off before I even got seated. I
walked in and was ignored by the hostess who hustled off to do something
else as soon as I walked in and didn't even acknowledge me.
I waited while employees buzzed by without even looking at me.
I looked at the food going by. I looked at the menu. I looked at the
employees who refused to meet my eye. The place looked like a cheap,
dirty, roadside diner and I wanted something better so I went
across the parking lot to Tachikawa and enjoyed my dinner there.

| Soga's | Davis, CA | |
|
I have been here a couple of times and really loved it. I had scallops
both times because it was so good the first time. I feel the bread
and butter should have been served cold but not so cold you couldn't
spread the butter. My food was cooked perfectly and served perfectly.
I would go again and try the meat just to see if maybe I got lucky
in the past!

| La Strada | San Pablo, CA | |
|
Very traditional family style Italian restaurant with actual
Italians cooking and serving. I went in on a Thursday around 7:30
and the place was about half full but ALL of the patrons were seniors
except me. In the back there was some kind of association or Chamber
of Commerce dinner going on so it seems like a community gathering
place. Around 8 the families started coming in. The food was quite
good and the service attentive. I was especially impressed with
the earnest teenage busboy working his tail off to do a great job.

| Sun Hong Kong Restaurant | Berkeley, CA | |
|
The main attraction here is that it is open late. It's filthy
and the food is bad but it is very cheap and the only place open after
midnight.
|
||
| Juan's Place | Berkeley, CA | |
|
Juan's is an institution, not a dining experience. You go
there with 10 people from work for someone's birthday or
going away party. The food is okay but don't let anyone tell
you it's authentic or even good. It's part of the atmosphere
for the service to be bad and the meal to be too much. It's just
fun to go with friends, that's all.

||
| Shattuck Avenue Spats | Berkeley, CA | |
|
Circa 1970's this bar used to be the closest place to the Univerity
where you could get a cocktail so it has a venerable history but
now there are lots of places to drink so it has lost some of its luster.
It's still fun to go camp out in the broken-down couches and
have cocktails and bar snacks but it's pretty expensive.
DO NOT eat in the restaurant - the food is really quite bad and there
are lots of other good places to eat within a block or two.
