| Ravenous Cafe | Healdsburg, CA | |
|
I see the last review for this was in 2000 and the address is listed as
117 North St which I believe is now where Ravette can be found. Simmilar
names bbut totally different ambiance. Ravenous is not around the corner from The Raven Theatre (and the Ravenette
next door to the Raven) in a little bungalow that has a sort of modern
French villa kind of feel. We managed to work our way into a couple of seats at the bar where the bartender
was extremely knowledgeable and tailored our wine and drinks to our
exact tastes and ccravings. He also advised me of a lamb dish off the
menu that was pure bliss. The spouse had gorgonzola cheeseburger that
met his 'ravenous' desires after a day of hitting wineries.
I highly recommend Ravenous for excellent everything - if you can get
in (unlike Ravenette, I believe they take rez's) you should go
for it. Even lunch is packed, so consider calling ahead regardless.
Enjoy in good health!

| Taqueria Guadalajara | Healdsburg, CA | |

Good. Cheap. Burritos are huge. Salsa - red and green - are excellent. Mole sauce
is nums. This is comparable to the 'soul food' that was common
fare for my family in S. Texas. The atmosphere is legit - great folk art
w/ local vignettes. Great jukebox. Eat like a king for under $10 and
they serve Jamaica!

| Annapurna | Santa Rosa, CA | |
|
Technically this restaurant lists itself as Himalayan - with Tibetan
and Indian cuisine. Go and have this food. I suggest getting there early (as locals start packing in promptly
at 7:00) and ordering either the meat combo or veg combo (or both). The
lamb is a bit greasy. Good spice to all of the dishes. Cauliflower is
fantastic, greens are pretty standard and the chicken dish - which
is not named as tikka masala (however is the same) - is great! They call
it the Annapurna Kukhura. Beers are standard, wines available by the glass. Best part is the atmosphere; you don't have to do it, but de-shoe-ing
and cross legged seating is playful. Generally 2 people on waitstaff at times when we have gone. One is informative,
inviting and helpful. The other is as if one were to expose an impressionable
Tibetan girl to MTV 24/7 for about 3 years; a bit pushy on the alcohol,
a little surly and short on service. You'll know the two apart immediately
- again - makes the experience fun. If you want to have some fun and enjoy the tactile, sensuous qualities
of food, this is a fun and great place.

Flights of wine or bottles - you wont go wrong.
If you're a teetotaller, order one of the local beverages (crafted
by an ex-vintner) Sonoma Sparklers...there's an apple, pear,
peach, raspberry, lemonade or blood orange - omg nummies!
Don't go here without having an order of the fried green beans -
yum!!! Their dinner salads are a cornucopia of goodies - if you like variety,
go for it. The spousal unit had the coq au vin and loved it. I tried it and liked it
too - I'm a very harsh judge of coq au vin having grown up on the traditional
stuff since childhood. (BTW -Every night M-F they have a blue plate special - have not have had
the fried chicken but have heard from at least 4 people that it is incredible.)
Guests I have take there (these are international travelers by lifestyle/job)
love the pasta and swear by it. Their deserts are killer! We had the donuts with zinfandel grape jelly, but all of them are excellent.
Nice place, casual and comfortable. Waitstaff are often rookies but still informative.

| Ravenette | Healdsburg, CA | |
|
If you can get a table (they report they do not take rez's), go ahead
and pick out a bottle of wine so they can get it rolling. If you cant get
in, ask how long until you can have a table and wait outside or come back
if you have to. There's maybe only eight tables and the place, it sits next door
to The Raven Theatre. Ravenette used to be Ravenous, which has now moved
around the corner to an adorbale bungalow, so be sure not to mistake
the names (even though it's all the same family).
Food is a la carte - the french onion soup is absolutely orgasmic. I hear
there is a truffle soup, but we seem to get there too late. The BBQ ribs (with creamed celery- oh nice!), tri-tip and scallops
are great. You only need one of the veg order - it's enough for 2 or
3. Greens are a bit on the salty side. The waitress is also the designer or many of the dishes (family to Ravenette/Ravenous)...if
it's available do the persimmon pudding! DO IT! There is a level
of zen or umame that one gets from truly incredible food - this is one
of those foods. Really - be pushy, squeeze in however you have to, but do it!

| The Black Rose | Santa Rosa, CA | |
|
Looked the place up on the net - very impressed with the listing of beers
and the fact that they have Irish breakfast running all day. Many other
items looked like your not-so-average Irish pub-grub...gave the
overall impression of authenticity. We get there and the bar is the typcial local-yokels (I understand,
I've been the glaring local yokel before) who have no intention
of budging to let you squeeze. The tables are present, but look like
a 2nd thought.
Today was st Pattys - I adore an authentic Irish Breakfast - bangers,
eggs, blood pudding, etc. and was informed that there was nothing on
the advertised menu available but the $10/plate corned beef, cabbage
and potatoes. Ok - fair enough. Seemed like a rite of passage for St.
Pats...however the corned beef turned out to be the FDA Posion Squad
delight - yea! salt petre! C'mon, grandma Kate would have never subjected anyone to this
much saltiness. The cabbage was partially cooked (yeh - crunchy is
great in stir fry - but lay off in the Irish fare) and the potatoes were...well...boiled.
Guess that's authentic, right? The beer selection was ok - not as expected based on the website. We found
the local fav beer (Death & Taxes) to be stale. I guess a few celtic style tapestries from the van on the corner and a
patronage of skinheads makes an Irish pub in NorCal...we cannot seem
to find much else Eirie other than this place within the Healdsburg/wine
country area. I do not recommend this place - the only reason that I give it 2 stars is
that the bar experience appeared to be decent from afar and the beers
have potential.

| Negri's Italian Dinners | Occidental, CA | |
|
This place has been around awhile - very cool place. Family/60's
hipster style joint. The pizza is great - had the margherita and a glass
of burgundy and it was just damned well rounded.
The spouse had the ravioli and spaghetti and swears by it.
If I get back and have the gnocci (my weakness) I'll update.
I definitely recommend it - hearty, comfort food.

| Hydro Bar & Grill | Calistoga, CA | |
|
I give these guys 4 because the tap beer selection is robust and a decent
selection of esoteric spirits.
The food is nothing to sneer at as it is by no means your standard pub-grub.
Good, hearty pick food that holds up nicely with embibing.
The patrons are friendly, however the barstaff can be a bit aloof if
you're not a regular.

| Puerto Vallarte Mexican Restaurant | Calistoga, CA | |
|
Cheap grub that will stick to your bones. They rely heavily on the cheese
in their dishes. Good flavor. In & out is easy, staff is efficient
& friendly.
It is a definite taqueria atmosphere - so of course it's not going
to meet many Calistoga tourist stereo-type expectations. Quaint
- reminded me of many taqueria's in S. Texas/border.
Nice break from the spa/vineyard tour routine.

| Free State Brewing Co | Lawrence, KS | |
|
A source of contention between myself and my husband is the beer at Free
State. I love Ad Astra, however I found all of Free State's other
beers to be so-so and not deserving of the hype.
What I did not think was so-so was the food! WOW! There is something on
the menu or on special for just about any hankering! If only the brewmaster
were as talented as the chef.
If you can brave the crowds (this place is never NOT packed) and even
a 10-15 minute wait, it is worth it.

||
| Blind Tiger Brewery & Rstrnt | Topeka, KS | |
|
The rating is for the beer and not the food.
There is always 8-13 hand-crafted beers on tap at Blind Tiger, so there
is something for everyone. Generally there are at least a couple of
wheats from filtered to unfiltered and even a raspberry. The Java porter
is truly a beer to write home about! Easy to drink, you find yourself
wondering if you will be amped for the night. If you are fortunate, you
might be able to enjoy a cask. The brewer comes with accolades, certificates
and metals - deservedly so. He is known to use hops from his own garden
for his hoppy specialties.
If you cant make up your mind, get the beer sampler - they will treat you
right.
Also, The mixed drinks are stout and delicious, too, if suds are not
your thing of the moment.
The bartenders are generally knowledgeable and friendly.
Food - I'd classify as greasy/pub grub. The chicken strips are
huge and good. Sometimes the burnt ends are good, but not much there
once you've picked through the fat and hit the slice of white bread
bed bolstering teh serving.

| Kiko's Mexican Food Restaurant | Corpus Christi, TX | |

Portions are huge. Wait might be awhile, but you will go away stuffed
and happy.
I loved their refried beans...there was something incredible and
nutty about them.
Every dish was always excellent. Go!

| Los Olivos Mexican Patio | Scottsdale, AZ | |
|
I'm really not sure how this restaurant gets such accolades for
the food. I would say it should not be missed for the unique atmosphere,
however as an ex-Texan and mex/tex-mex afficianado, I found the food
sub-standard with the exception of the salsa.
Service is standard, nothing exceptional.
Nice location, central to museum, shops and other restaurants.
Overall - overrated, over-priced but worth a first time.

| Char's Thai Restaurant | Tempe, AZ | |
|
Darkly lit with kitschy thai dolls performing traditional dances,
dieties and ex-steakhouse fixtures (wood/nogahyde booths, wagon-wheel
lighting) make this place an endearing place to return.
Don't go if you are in a hurry as the service is irregular, however
it is a fun place for couples to adventure with plenty of time to chat
and try your hand at speaking thai (many common phrases are listed on
the to-go menu).
I loved the food. I am a fan of Thom Kha Gai/Plameuk. Portions are modest
comparatively, but affordable enough that you can try several items
and have fun. Staff was always willing to make dishes to-order if you
have special requests. Drinks are cheap and strong.
The food will not knock you off your feet, but it is one of those very affordable,
joints where you can relax, returning because it is comfortable and
familiar.

| Gordon Biersch | Tempe, AZ | |
|
This Biersch is particularly good for it's beer.
The brewer exhibits much talent in his seasonals and takes good care
of his 'fans' by offering tappings for the first quaff of his
delicious ambrosia.
The schwarz, kolsch and marzen have been most memorable.
Order your french fries with the garlic, you wont be sorry.
The appetizers are good, fish dishes are good and the margaritas are
great.
I recommend the patio for excellent people watching and nice atmosphere
on the cooler AZ nights.
Very tasty.

| The Texas Star Cafe | Manhattan, KS | |
|
Texas Star became somewhat of a mainstay for my husband and I as we lived
in the Manhattan area for a while.
Salsas were good, the owner is committed to 'heat' and will
locate the fire level you desire from his shelf of sauces ranging from
Tabasco varieties to obscure caribbean fire.
Two types of chili - the beef is all Texas. No beans. Chunks of beef and
all the right spices. Full bar, usually carry at least one beer from
Free State and their sangria washed down the hearty brunch where you
choose from various options to make a complete stick-to-your-ribs
breakfast on the weekends.
Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Be prepared to make a choice with
the maitre'd when you come in as to whether you want Texas Star side
or Hibachi Hut (creole/cajun) side. Staff will often accommodate
you with items from each side if you and your guest are at a stand-off.
Overall, one of only a handfull of places that are memorable in Manhattan.

| Hunan Express | Manhattan, KS | |
|
I can see why many of the previous reviews were positive as well as delivered.
If any of the previous reviewers were to set foot in this restaurant
they would think twice about it.
Can't beat the prices, food is ok, but the restaurant is filthy.
Maybe it was a bad day, but I do not think so as many co-workers and friends
who had visited (once only for each one) and affirmed my observations.
Walls, floor, booths, counters/food prep area was a mess. There was
an area where condiments and utensils were provided and I swear there
was unidentified food particulate that had probably been there for
days or more.
My observation? Eat at your own risk!

| Auntie Mae's Parlor | Manhattan, KS | |
|
I loved this place. Cozy booths downstairs, dark, warm-wood setting.
The jukebox is a Gen X'er's dream.Staff is friendly and the
tacos are fresh, hit the spot. Great place to chat with a friend and just
chill.
Some nights have the added surprise of a serenade by perky marching
band.
