Sonoma Chicken Coop San Jose, CA
What the heck happened to this place in a years time? They had a wounderful business model in the beginning, but since the last time I was there the prices have gone up to like $15-$17 for an entree and the quality has suffered, plus the items that I thought were cool are no longer offered. Big disappointment. The side salad use to be such a deal, all kinds of goodies, NOW it's lettuce, tomato, red onion, crouton and appeared to be aged like a fine wine by the limpness of it. And guy's--please put your salad dressings on ice. That way people won't get sick. I won't be returning.
Sicilia in Bocca Morgan Hill, CA
Another great find! This little place looks like it was an old house at one time, but today it is churning out some real top notch meals. The Chef used to be a Palermo's in San Jose for years and be a big fan of that establishment was just the excuse to try out his new place. My visit was at lunch, it started off with water with slice of lemon and a complementary slice of Bruschetta, very nice. We ordered the fried Calamari as an Antipasto and I would have to say it would be one of the best I have ever had, oil free, tender, served with some type of home made Marinara. Their bread is just out of this world, served hot, crunchy on the outside, moist and flavorful. I ordered the Penne, Porcini mushrooms & Sausage in a light cream sauce ($12.75). This is the third time I have ordered this, it’s that good. They give you plenty here; I had enough leftover for another meal. My friend ordered a Linguine with Prawns, roasted peppers, et. al. looked fantastic, and chock full of goodies. The service is let’s say, a little …..Laid back, it’s a family affair. It’s still a fun place and very ethnic, with all the Italian being spoken in the kitchen (I said it was small!) I imagined it to almost feel like you’re in some café in Messina. http://www.bestofmorganhill.com/Sicilia_In_Bocca/Sicilia_In_Bocca.htm
Ristorante Portofino Pacifica, CA
This place is a favorite, http://ristorante-portofino.com/ My third visit here. We had a free bottle of wine that came with a room package at at the Best Western Lighthouse Hotel. We chose a House Chardonnay, it went well with the Gamberoni con Cozze alla Portofino (Prawns with Mussels in a Creamy Brandy Sauce). They serve it with sautéed spinach in garlic and olive oil. Inclusive is a Penne pasta with a very nice marinara. My wife had Veal Piccata (White Wine - Lemon Sauce with Capers) and the boy had a kids Burger. With the meal comes plenty of bread with the oil/balsamic dip. Ohhhh, and their Ceaser salad is orgasmic at this place, it will bring a tear to the eye, it’s so good.
Puccini & Pinetti San Francisco, CA
Dinner at http://www.pucciniandpinetti.com/ was as good as I remembered it from a previous visit, I had their version of a cioppino, its very Nuevo style, the fish and shell fish is almost in a “tomato jam” very Smokey and delicious. My wife had the grilled Lamp chops, she said they were "OK" and my boy did the “make your own Pizza”. I had a Nice glass of Pinot Noir and I was good to go. If your near Union square, try this place. Great atmosphere, kid friendly.

The Thirsty Bear San Francisco, CA
I found a great little Micro-Brewery called THE THIRSTY BEAR. http://www.thirstybear.com/, It was excellent! They have a full line of handcrafted beers, full bar, and the food is in a Spanish flare, ie. TAPAS! I ordered a cheese sampler along with my English style dark Ale. It consisted of fresh bread with a kalamata olive spread, several Spanish cheeses, some pickled onions, roasted pecans, and walnut bread crostini. It wasn’t cheap, but I figure I spent about as much as I would have back at the Moscone Convention center for a catered cold sandwich, plus I got to have a good Beer in the price!
El Grullo Morgan Hill, CA
I love this place, It looks like it might have been a drive-up at one time in the past, you know, where a girl would come out skating to take your order. As of this writing (2006) we have a great little local gem. The food is fresh, and most everything has been excellent that I have ordered. I recommend thier Chili-relleno. The Cocido de Res is above average, not greasy in the broth at all, but lacked a few veggies I was used to, but still an awesome choice on the cold day I ordered it. Best refried beans I have ever encountered! I know that sounds silly, but it really is a good barometer on the freshness of a Mexican establishment. Believe me now or believe me later. The folks that run/work here are nice, clientel is mixed. Not a fancy place. In my mind, more of a place for lunch, but thats just me. On Monterey between Dunne and Tennet exits. Stop there for a Bean & Cheese Burrito to go, you'll be hooked!
Mccormick & Schmick's San Jose, CA
Very impressed on my first visit here. Service was top notch. Portions are good, The dishes we had were awsome! My wife had A Salmon filet, stuffed with brie and crab. I had the Salmon prepared on a ceder plank, that was moist and flaky, although I didn't really find any hint of wood smoke I was expecting. We also hed the Black mussel appetizer, it was plentiful, smokey/garlic and full of flavor. There Seafood chowder is steller. One caveat.... I thought the restraunt to be a bit noisy, granted it was a Saturday night at 6:00 pm. , but if you are looking for a quiet romantic place for intimate converstion, forget it. The 3 of us got out of there for $125 including tip. That was with an appetizer and a bottle of wine. I'd go back for sure.
