| Dixie Kitchen & Bait Shop | Chicago, IL | |
|
Pretty authentic Cajun and Creole restaurant with an ambiance
to match. You can't go wrong with the Oyster Po'Boy,
and their barbecue (Eastern North Carolina style, vinegar sauce
based) is pretty authentic with a bit of a kick.

| White Palace Grill | Chicago, Illinois | |
|
24 hour greasy spoon where the food is average. But if you've
been out drinking all night, the food will taste better to you
before you go home. Breakfast food and short order meals.

| Cap City Diner | Columbus, OH | |
|
Another very good Cameron Mitchell restaurant. The service
is always top rate, and the food is just as good. Cap City is Mitchell's
take on greasy spoon diner food. Everything is good, it just depends
on what you're in the mood for. You have to try the meatloaf,
which comes on a piece of bread and is covered with mashed potatoes
and onion straws. Excellent.

| Sullivan's Steakhouse | Raleigh, NC | |
|
Sullivan's is an upscale steakhouse along the lines of Morton's,
Ruth's Chris, and others. It is very good, yet doesn't
do anything to distinguish itself from its competition. The
steaks are prime beef and excellently prepared. The side dishes
are enough for two to share, and the drink menu includes today's
obligatory martini varieties. The lounge can get crowded when
you're waiting for a table, but this should be expected on
a weekend night. A good place to go, especially if someone else
is paying.

| Southend Brewery & Smokehouse | Raleigh, NC | |
|
The Southend Brewery and Smokehouse is a place you have to go to
in Raleigh. Not only great beer, but great food as well. The brewery's
has its own smoker onsite to make apple wood-grilled smoked meats
including blackened salmon and New York strip. But you have to
try the barbecue. Whether it's the wings, ribs, or pulled
pork, you can taste the distinct flavor of apple wood smoke in
each bite. Great for washing down with any of the great house brews.
My favorite is the wheat.

| Hannah Flanagan's Pub | Asheville, NC | |
|
It's not so much about the food here as it is about the beer.
They do have a late night menu so you can nosh while you drink from
a selection of 37 taps (unless I counted incorrectly). Try the
local micro, Highland, which makes some fine beers. My favorite
was the Black Mocha Stout. Creamy with hints of chocolate.

| Riverside Four Boat Marina | Bellevue, KY | |
|
Riverside 4 Boat Marina is a place with a great view and average
food. It's docked on the Ohio River in Bellevue, Kentucky
across the river from Cincinnati.
The best place to enjoy your meal here is on the deck, which extends
for about 100 feet, the length of the whole barge.
Foods here are sandwiches and typical fried foods. It's
not too expensive, but the view's better than the food.

||
| Brass Mule | Newport, KY | |
|
Not much to say about the food at the Brass Mule. In fact, the staff
could afford to be better looking considering the kind of place
this is.
|
||
| Cheapside Bar & Grill | Lexington, KY | |
|
Cheapside, like others have said, is more of a bar than a restaurant.
But what they do have in terms of bar fare, they do well. My favorite
place in Downtown Lexington.
|
||
| Corky's Ribs & Bbq | Lexington, KY | |
|
Corky's is one of the places that put Memphis on the barbecue
map. If you're in Lexington or anywhere you find a Corky's,
you have to try it.
Unlike what most people think about barbecue ribs, Corky's
cooks their ribs with only a rub of spices. You have to try them
this way to get an idea of their true flavor. They have a good sauce
which you can get to dip your meat in, but try it with just the rub.
You'll love it.
They also have good sides, the kind that most bbq joints have,
such as macaroni and cheese and cornbread.
|
||
| Jozo's Bayou Gumbo | Lexington, KY | |
|
For the price, and considering you're about a thousand miles
from New Orleans, Jozo's offers good Cajun and Creole food.
You may find places outside of Louisiana that serve a more authentic
reproduction of their food, but it will cost you much more than
you'll pay at Jozo's.
I miss the one they used to have in the Greater Cincinnati area,
but I stop by everytime I'm in Lexington.
|
||
| Pompilio's | Newport, KY | |
|
Pompilio's is a place to get good, inexpensive Italian food.
My favorite is the Italian Sampler, which offers eggplant parmigiana,
lasagna, ravioli, and italian sausage. It's more food
than one person can eat.
Also, they have a bocce court to play the Italian game, and part
of the movie "Rain Man" starring Dustin Hoffman and
Tom Cruise was filmed here. But the best reason to go here is for
the food, where you get your money's worth.
|
||
| Panera Bread | Cincinnati, OH | |
|
Panera is a bakery-cafe which makes good bread and good sandwiches.
They also serve soup and salads, but the mainstay is the bakery,
where they make a myraid of artisanal breads, cakes, cookies,
and pretty good bagels.
Sandwiches tend to be a bit on the foo-foo side, but they use quality
ingredients, and the most important ingredient, good bread.
But don't go looking for Italian bread here. You'll
have to wade through the kalamata olive-tomato-onion focaccia
instead of something good and simple to buy as a side to the pasta
you make for dinner.
Other than that, no complaints.

||
| Margarita's | Erlanger, KY | |
|
Margarita's is one of the better Mexican joints on either
side of the Ohio River. When you find a place that serves ceviche,
which is a shrimp and seafood appetizer cooked by marinating
in lime juice and tequila, you know it's the real thing.
Also look for your atypical Mexican dishes like fish or pork,
or chicken made with mole sauce, instead of the regular tacos,
burritos, and the like.
|
||
| Daddy O's | Grove City, OH | |
|
Daddy O's is a fast food restaurant along the lines of Rally's.
$.99 burgers, limited menu, but good, charbroiled burgers.
They even have a fried bologna sandwich, which comes with grilled
onions and mustard. Unfortunately, the one at this location
is now a Starbucks drive through.
|
||
| Bruno's Pizza | Oxford, OH | |
|
Bruno's sells average slices of pizza to the denizens of
Oxford who are looking for something to eat after the bars close.
It kinda looks like Chef Boyardee pizza when they're making
it, and they slice it by cutting it with a big pair of scissors.
If you're looking for anything late, this is it.
|
||
| Bazbeaux | Indianapolis, IN | |
|
Bazbeaux has the best pizza in Indy from what I've experienced.
I went on the advice of a friend, and I'm glad I did. This downtown
location gets very busy, so be prepared to wait anywhere from
30-60 minutes to get a seat. But once you do, you'll be glad
you did.
|
||
| Skipper's Pub | Oxford, OH | |
|
Skipper's Pub is a great place to get some food and an adult
beverage before a Miami University sporting event. They have
gyros, sandwiches, and they even have Vienna Beef hot dogs and
Italian beef for expatriate Chicagolanders who miss some of
their native grub.
It can get crowded at times, but stand in line at the counter in
front of the grill, order and pay for your food, and go to the bar
in the back to get a beer while they quickly prepare your meal.
|
||
| Steak 'n Shake | Indianapolis, IN | |
|
Steak 'N Shake is a good place to get a good burger at a good
price. This particular location in downtown Indianapolis is
welcome because it is open 24 hours a day, which is a rarity anywhere
in any downtown, and because it offers good food to the late night
crowd after the bars close.
While their burgers are good, I've always found the place
to be a little on the pricey side. Almost $5 for just a sandwich
alone is a bit steep, especially when you don't really need
to eat anyway.
But enjoy the atmosphere, hope your wait for a table isn't
too long, and dive into the burgers and shoestring fries, because
dawn is almost here.
|
||
| Slippery Noodle Inn | Indianapolis, IN | |
|
Welcome to the Slippery Noodle Inn, Indiana's oldest bar,
which proudly dates back to 1850. This bar, which serves food
from its full menu until 11 PM every night, is more than just a bar.
It proudly serves up good food with live blues music, which is
the Noodle's calling card.
The menu varies from steak to pasta, chicken to sandwiches. Whether
you're from these parts or not, you have to try the Breaded
Tenderloin Sandwich. A staple around the Mideastern US, this
sandwich takes a pork cutlet, lovingly pounded flat, breaded
and deep fried for one of the best sandwich eating experiences
you'll ever know.
Add to that one of a number of microbrews available on tap, just
relax, settle back and enjoy your meal with a blues band playing
in the background.
