| The Diamond Restaurant | Hainesport, NJ | |
|
On rare occasions we happen across a restaurant that has not been reviewed
and is worthy of mention. The Diamond is an excellent restaurant that
serves quality food at a reasonable price. We were there for dinner
and had the Goulash and the Calamari over linguine. Both were served
piping hot and were outstanding. We both had enough left for another
meal. The restaurant has an extensive meal and serves breakfast, lunch,
and dinner. The owner is Greek and the menu includes some Greek items
(Gyros, Shish-kabobs, etc). A word of warning; save room for dessert.
They have the most extensive dessert offering we have come across.
We had the baklava and chocolate mousse cake. Again, large portions
at $2.75 apiece. We took home macaroons and baklava. All of our desserts
were superb. If you are in this area, you need to check this restaurant
out.

| Captain George's Seafood Restaurant | Virginia Beach, VA | |
|
I was really surprised when I did not find this restaurant rated on dine.com.
We had eaten at their Williamsburg location about 7 years ago and were
really impressed with the quality of the food. When you talk about buffet
restaurants, you generally don't put the words high quality and
quantity together. Captain George's has the best and largest
selection of food items I have come across. We went on a Sunday afternoon
(between 12 and 4, the buffet is 5 bucks cheaper than the regular price).
We arrived at 12:30 and plenty of seats in the large restaurant were
available. An hour later, the restaurant was packed. This was a good
thing as the food items were replenished regularly. While seafood
is the specialty, there are other meat, poultry and side items. I can't
really comment on anything but the seafood and it was outstanding and
varied. It was all you could eat of shrimp, scallops, king crab legs,
clams, mussels, and others in all forms (fried, boiled, steamed, stuffed,
etc.). To top it off there is an excellent salad bar, and dessert bar.
I would recommend going on Sunday or a weekend evening when the restaurant
is crowded. This should ensure hot, fresh food and plenty of it.

| Almost Home | Natchitoches, LA | |
|
We went to Almost Home for lunch on Sunday. They offered a buffet with
several meats, numerous sides and hot rolls. Our previous experience
with buffets has been lukewarm food which has dried out. It is not the
case here. All of the items were hot and fresh. The food was excellent;
growing up, home cooking was never this good. One reviewer had indicated
the restaurant was expensive. We found it to be very reasonable. It
was $7.50 for a meat, 3 sides, bread and drink. You can add a piece of good
homemade pie for $1.50. Ask to be seated in the rear, the tables overlook
the lake.

| Katie's Restaurant & Taverna | Omaha, NE | |
|
We have been going to Katie's since it opened in 1980 on Dodge St.
It was originally owned and operated by a Greek widow named Katie. She
was assisted in the opening of the business by the Greek Orthodox Church
and the clergy often worked in the restaurant until it got established.
Katie sold the business and returned to Greece about 10 years ago. The
restaurant is still operated by a Greek family (brother and sister;
Billie and Nick) and the quality of the food is always excellent. The
gyros are our favorite(either the sandwich or the plate with greek
potatoes). The desserts are made by mom and the Baklava is superb.

| Rheinlander German Restaurant | Portland, OR | |
|
We went to the Rhinelander early on a Friday afternoon to take advantage
of the early dinner specials; at 5:30 the restaurant, which is large
was already filling up. And with good reason; the food and service were
excellent and the strolling musicians were delightful. The early
specials offer a wide variety of entries and the meals include swiss
cheese fondue and choice of soup (all for under $15.00). This restaurant
is not to be missed if you are in Portland.

| Fishermen's Grotto | San Francisco, CA | |
|
I guess both good food and reasonable prices in a congested tourist
area is too much to expect. We ate here for lunch and while the food was
good (not great) $20 to $30 for a lunch entree is too much. We elected
to split a tossed salad and received chopped iceberg with a slice of
tomato, a slice of cucumber, and one olive for $6.95. I had basically
the same meal 3 days later in Astoria, OR with better food, larger portions
and a much better view for $14.00. This was our first visit to Fisherman's
Wharf in 40 years; oh for the good old days.

| Ship Inn | Astoria, OR | |
|
What a neat place to have a meal. We were seated by the window and had a
great view of the river, the Astoria bridge, and the trolley. The food
was very good and the portions are large. I elected to have the full sized
seafood platter. I could not do it justice. The seafood was fresh and
tasty; the batter was a little too thick for our tastes but still very
good. The day we were there the full platter included cod, halibut,
prawns, scallops, and oysters (2 of each) alongside coleslaw and fries.
Eat an early lunch so you have time to walk it off.

| Euro Cafe | Mesa, AZ | |
|
It took us a while to find the restaurant but it was worth the hunt. The
restaurant moved about a year ago to 207 N. Gilbert Rd., Gilbert, AZ.
This is downtown Gilbert and there is ample parking. We went on a week
night and had no problems being seated. The weekend might be a different
story. The food and service are excellent. The menu will blow you away.
There are so many choices and a wide variety of cuisines. It could best
be described as a modified mediteranean. We had the asparagus puffs
for an appitizer (great), we split the stuffed gyros (excellent) and
then had our own dessert. The portions are large and should be split.

| Pinnacle Peak | Tucson, AZ | |
|
After reading some of the reviews, I was really disappointed in the
quality of the food. It has a fun, touristy atmosphere which helps fill
the long wait time. The salads, side dishes and margaritas were good
but the meats were below average. My wife had the Cowgirl steak (t-bone).
The outside was charred and the inside was undercooked. I had the combo
(ribs and filet?). The ribs were tender but dry and the filet was far
from tender. If you are craving a goog steak, go elsewhere.

| Edge of Texas | El Paso, TX | |
|
What a great find. One of the best, if not the best, steak I have ever had.
The steaks are cooked to perfection. The three of us had prime rib, rib
eye, and BBQ combo. All were excellent with 2 sides and salad or soup
included. Save room for dessert. There is a selection of about 12. The
2 we selected were rich and great. (The BBQ eater was too full for dessert.)
The restaurant is off the beaten track (north on US 54 near the TX/NM
state line) but worth the drive for a special evening.

| Chope's | La Mesa, NM | |
|
We ordered the Chile Relleno and Chile combo. It came with rice and beans.
The chile rellenos were very good with a light batter coating. The remainder
of the combo was average, as were the chips and salsa. We luckily arrived
a few minutes prior to opening on a week night. Once the doors were opened,
the small restaurant filled immediately and there was a 30 minute wait
for those not seated.
