Cattleman's Club Steakhouse Pierre, SD
I had an occasion to visit Pierre in May of 2005 on business. I ran across dine.com's ratings for Cattleman's Club Steakhouse and checked it out the first night in town. The 12 ounce steak was EXCELLENT! So good that I returned the next night and had it again. The servers are friendly (they even remembered me on the second night). The salad, bread and potato is nothing special, but they are truly "side" dishes to the main attraction: a well spiced, tender and tasty cut of beef. In fact, they have some of the best steaks I've had in a long time! Drinks are reasonably priced (glass of wine is $2; beer is $2; soft drinks and tea are reasonably priced, too). The restaurant is "cowboy casual" and the servers wear jeans. This is one of those local restaurants that is well known to the residents (and well-attended) and is a place you should definitely check out if you find yourself in Pierre, SD at dinner time. P.S. My Pierre friend says their prime rib is excellent, too.
Morelia Mexican Dining Tallahassee, FL
Family owned, genuine Mexican restaurant. Not your "national chain" mass-produced Mexican food. Try their pescado (grouper) or camarones diablo (spicy shrimp)as an alternative to burritos and tacos, which are very good, too. Their iced tea is great! My family eats there at least once a week. The servers are attentive and friendly, and the food for your dollar value is tops. Lunches are at reduced prices. Located in the "old Wal Mart" shopping center on Thomasville Road, near Applebee's. Open for lunch at 11 AM and they usually close around 9 PM.
Gordo's Tallahassee, FL
Closest thing to a "Miami-style Cuban Restaurant" in Tallahassee. Service is slow. Parking is a bummer. Restaurant is in an old house and has that "college campus hangout" atmosphere. Food is good, for a Tallahssee Cuban restaurant, but most places in Miami would put Gordo's to shame in price and quantity of food served. Still, Tallahassee is not Miami, and Gordo's is a welcome addition to the Capitol City's dining options. Tables are close and the place is noisy. Go there to get good food, not to have a cozy chat.
Mori Japanese Steak House Tallahassee, FL
Save a buck or two and hit their "early bird" for a 10% discount. Good food, and easier to get seated than the other Tallahassee "cook at your table" Japenese restaurant (which is very good, too). Entertainment factor varies greatly with your assigned chef. Some truly entertain; others simply "cook." The sirloin steak is super and worth the higher price. Basic chicken is always tasty. Pay extra for fried rice. It's much better than their steamed rice. They offer Sushi for those of you who like to ingest uncooked seafood. Located in the "Movies 8" mall, just off North Monroe street (between the Tallahassee Mall and Interstate 10). Full service bar. Not open for lunch presently. They have served lunch in the past, so you may want to call to see if they have started again.
