Golden Corral Steak House Alamogordo, NM
It's a chain buffet place, so you know what to expect going in. It's okay, but stay away from the steaks. I asked for medium rare and got well done.
Grandma's Restaurant Albuquerque, NM
Grandma's on Osuna no longer exists. It was a pretty good place for lunch, but no more. Some people are confusing it with Grandma Travis on south Broadway, which is still there. Two different restaurants.
Yum-Yum's Tularosa, NM
Looking for a quick breakfast bite, I stopped into Yum Yum's one morning and ordered a breakfast burrito. I guess I must have been one of the first customers, because the lights were out inside, and I couldn't really see what was going on. After placing my order, I could have sworn that the guy took a burrito out of the refrigerator and put it in the microwave. Was it possible that it had been made the day before? Sure seemed that way when I got it. The tortilla was sticky, the meat bland, chili nonexistant. Guess I must have caught them by surprise.
Western Bar and Cafe Cloudcroft, NM
One evening in Cloudcroft I was looking for a quick bite to eat. I stopped into the Western Cafe, located next to, oddly enough, the Western Bar. The place was pretty full, but I was seated right away. I ordered the "Allen's Special", which is a burger patty open face on an english muffin. It's topped with a queso sauce that is a sure artery clogger! Heart attack aside, I relished every bite. Attentive staff, and the price was right. One note, though. Bring your greenbacks, because at the Western Cafe, they don't take American Express....(or Visa or Mastercard, for that matter).
The Melting Pot Albuquerque, NM
Interesting, to say the least. A private dining experience, as each booth is semi secluded from the rest. Never having had fondue in a restaurant, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the meal was pleasant enough, although pricy for what you get. I didn't really get the hang of cooking the food at the table, but maybe that's just me. I did, however, learn what "fondue" translates into english: "Eat before you come here"
Scalo Northern Italian Grill Albuquerque, NM
Usually a crowded place is a sign of good food. Not here. It's a sign of people wanting to be "seen". Since I'm not a professional person (ie., I work for a living), I didn't fit the mold of the typical patron of Scalo's. People coming in after me were seated first, I was virtually ignored throughout the entire meal, and then the waiter griped that I didn't tip enough! A tip is just that: a tip. If you want more, don't act like I'm nonexistant. Ten percent was wayyyyy more than you deserved. Next time I'm in this area, I'll go next door to Gecko's. The folks are a lot friendlier over there.
Mykonos Cafe Albuquerque, NM
When you walk in, you feel like you're in for a treat, even though the restaurant is located in a strip center next to an MVD express and a Dairy Queen. However, after you've eaten here you'll wish you'd have gone to Dairy Queen. Our food was bland, wait staff acted as if we were a burden, and it was overpriced for what we ate. Quite a disappointment, to say the least.
Carrow's Santa FE, NM
I know, I know.....why go to a chain restaurant in a city filled with great local spots? Late one evening my companion and I were traveling through Santa Fe and we wanted a bite to eat. Since most everything was closed, we chose Carrows. Big mistake. Although the place was almost empty, we were seated in the back room. Our waitress was unfamiliar with almost everything on the menu, and wasn't very pleasant. From the time we ordered, it took roughly 45 minutes for the food to arrive, and believe me, it wasn't worth the wait. I ordered breakfast, with eggs over easy. They were hard as a rock. We had to practically scream to get the waitress's attention for coffee and water refills, and when we went to pay, the check was for an incorrect amount. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!
Ramona's Alamogordo, NM
Ramona's is a pretty good place to eat. I enjoyed the mexican food, especially the chile rellenos. Just crispy enough and not too greasy. Chips and salsa before the meal is good, although when I visited the salsa was a little watery. Not a big deal, though. Wait staff was pleasant and attentive.
China Inn Buffet Alamogordo, NM
Typical Chinese buffet: Get a plate, go to buffet, same old entrees. Nothing spectacular. Don't waste your time or money.
Casa De Suenos Tularosa, NM
Pretty decent place to go for dinner. The place is clean and the staff seems pleasant enough. The entrees were enough to fill us up, but not so much as to need a doggie bag. They have a lunch buffet, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.
