| Casablanca Buffet | Mesquite, NV | |
|
Granted, it has been quite a while since my wife and I stopped here for
breakfast (March of 1997). So, the food may be better now. Not that the
food was bad, but it was certainly nothing special.
We might take another look at this place if we pass by this way again,
but it is more likely that we will check out someplace else first.

| Little Rhein Steak House | San Antonio, TX | |
|
It was March of 1995 that my wife and I ate here while visiting San Antonio.
It had been there a long time already and the food was excellent so I assume
the place is still there (but the price is undoubtedly higher).
A little stone house near the riverwalk, a delightful place; a little
crowded but somewhat romantic. If the weather is nice one can dine outside.
Great steaks. Expensive.

| Dixie's Tavern | Norfolk, VA | |
|
We lunched here in June of 2002. It is a bar and grille type place. The
menu features Cajun food. My wife had a pork sandwich; I ate their "Bourbon
Street Burger". Good food. It was not too crowded the day we were
there but I imagine the place is noisy once a good number of people arrive.

||
| Original Italian Pizza | Buena Vista, VA | |
|
This is a small town pizzeria - a downtown storefront operation. Nothing
fancy. GOOD PIZZA. My wife and I stopped in the early afternoon looking
for good pizza; we found it.

| El Coyote | Erlanger, KY | |
|
This place might actually be in Edgewood, KY.
Big place. Crowded the night we were there (Saturday night, June, 2002).
While I am aware that some think that the place does not serve authentic
Mexican food, I liked the way it tasted.
Service was ok. Portions were large.

| Many's | Ironwood, MI | |
|
While on vacation in May of 2001, we stopped overnight in Ironwood.
When asked for a recommendation, the hotel desk clerk suggested Manny's.
Part of the directions he gave included "it is right close to the
largest Indian statue in the world. Sure enough, there is a statue of
Hiawatha nearby (about 100 feet tall).
The place seemed to us to be a cross between a family restaurant and a
roadhouse. My wife ordered off the menu (what, I don't remember).
I decided to go with the buffet, which included steak. And the steak
was better than one would expect at a buffet.
We both enjoyed our meals and the friendly atmoshere.

| Grandma's Saloon and Grill | Duluth, MN | |
|
Yes, this is a bar that serves food. However, it was noontime on a Sunday
in 2001 that my wife and I stopped here for lunch. So the bar aspect of
the place was not very busy. We ate upstairs and had a good view of the
park below and the water.
The menu featured pub grub type food. It was good.

| Papa Charlie's Saloon & Grill | Lutsen, MN | |
|
My wife and I stopped for dinner here while on vacation june of 1991.
At this place we noticed (once again) that we did not fit the image the
place wanted for their clientele. We were offered seating in a somewhat
out-of-the-way wing along with other “older” people and families
with children. The main eating area seemed to be populated only with
younger couples - the “beautiful people” where the atmosphere was
more like a nightclub. We didn’t really mind as we had a nice view from
our table and it was quieter.
My wife had walleye fish and a sweet potato which she enjoyed. My wild
rice soup with chicken was excellent. However I had misread the menu
and thought that I had also ordered a hamburger with black bean pate.
It turned out that what I really had ordered was a sandwich which had
not meat but rather a black bean patty! It was not good. My fault.

| World's Best Donuts | Grand Marais, MN | |
|
I am guessing that title "World's Best Donuts" is self-proclaimed.
But after having tasted their goods, I am not in a position to cast any
doubt.
I don't know for sure, but this place is probably open only during
their tourist season. They keep a tally board of customers from different
states and countries which is updated each year.
I recommend this place for a quick breakfast, or my favorite - a mid-morning
stop.

| My Sister's Place | Grand Marais, MN | |
|
My wife and I stopped here for dinner one June evening in 2003. Located
along the highway at the edge of town, it looks and feels much like a roadhouse
or a bar and grille.
The people there (staff and customers) were friendly. The food is not
fancy: my wife had a chicken fried burger and I had a jalapeno burger.
We split an order of onion rings. Typical pub grub; it was good.

||
| Great Wall | Bemidji, MN | |
|
My wife and I have eaten dinner here on two occasions while on vacation
(2001 & 2003). The fact that we came back the second time is a testament
to the quality of this Chinese buffet.
Larger selection than several Chinese buffets that we have visited.
The food was good and the presentation was good also.

| East Bay Hotel & Dining Room | Grand Marais, MN | |
|
It was in June of 2001 that my wife and I stopped here for lunch while on
vacation. We sat outside to eat which allowed us to enjoye the view of
Lake Superior. Our table had a large unbrella above which shielded
us when it started to rain. It was quite pleasant to "sit"
in the rain and enjoy or lunch.
The food was good. The service was fine. It was overall, a very pleasant
experience.

| Waterfront Restaurant | Thunder Bay, ON | |
|
It was a vacation trip in June of 2001 that my wife and I stayed overnight
in Thunder Bay. We drove around a while when we discovered a renovated
old rail depot which housed this restaurant (among other businesses).
The decor inside was plain - not an inspiring treatment of the old depot.
The food was good (not great). My wife had fish & chips and I ate Szechuan
beef.

||
| Lakeview Restaurant | Warroad, MN | |
|
Our June, 2001 vacation included an overnight stay in Warroad. The
desk clerk at the motel suggested this place and we are glad for it.
We decided to eat the buffet instead of ordering off the menu (this appeared
to be the most popular thing to do). The food was good.
The place has a large stone fireplace kind of in the middle and two walls
are mostly glass, affording diners the opportunity to see the lake.

| Melrose Place | Yorkton, SK | |
|
My wife and I stayed overnight in Yorkton while on vacation in 2001.
We asked the desk clerk for a restaurant recommendation. We took her
advice and ate at Melrose Place. We both had steak; it was a very good
meal and cost about the same number of dollars ($37.80 including tip)
that it would have in the US and we were using dollars that were worth
only about 67 cents at the time.
I don't want to give the impression that the cost was the reason
we enjoyed the place. The food was very good and the waitstaff was friendly
and efficient. The decor was fine also.
I wonder if the place is still there as it was located near the end of a
strip shopping center that appeared to be failing commercially. Perhaps
the restaurant will need to relocate to maintain its clientele.

||
| Ernie O's Restaurant & Pub | Edson, AB | |
|
My wife and I stayed overnight in Edson while on vacation in 2001. We
happened onto this place and we were glad for it. A very nice, friendly
place. The food was good and the surroundings pleasant.
|
||
| Tim Hortons | Hinton, AB | |
|
While on vacation in June of 2001, we stopped here for a Sunday morning
breakfast prior to visiting Jasper National Park. Since that time
we have visited several Tim Horton's but this was our first time.
In terms of comfort food, there is not much better than donuts. Ice cream
is the only thing that comes to mind right now.
|
||
| Mountain Restaurant | Lake Louise, AB | |
|
While enjoying a vacation in the Canadian Rockies in June of 2001, we
stopped here for a late lunch / early dinner. The food was good and the
service also. Very rustic appearance inside.
While we ate, at least three tour buses stopped and unloaded their hungry
travelers.
While the food was not "write-home" good, we would not hesitate
to stop here again should we ever travel back this way again (which I
hope to; the area is so beautiful).

||
| Uncle Joe's Steakhouse & Restaurant | Havre, MT | |
|
My wife and I stopped over night in Havre on our June 2001 vacation trip.
This place has a fairly extensive menu: steaks, seafoods, spaghetti,
fettucinne plus hamburgers hot dogs, etc. My wife and I each had an excellent
steak.
The atmoshere was relaxing. Our waitress was very friendly.
|
||
| Gramma Sharon's Cafe | Williston, ND | |
|
The dinner that my wife and I ate there while on a vacation trip in June
of 2001 was ok. The place is more of a truckstop type restaurant. Typical
cafe menu. The food was ok but nothing to write home about. This is a place
to get a meal, not to have a "dining experience".
