Havana Harry's Miami, FL
My wife and I never miss a chance to go to Havana Harry's when we're in Florida to visit my parents. Good service, great Cuban food, not to be missed. Lots of yummy fish entrees prepared in a variety of ways as well as meat dishes are available, usually with a side of black beans and rice and plantains -- yum!
Garcia Seafood & Grill Miami, FL
Casual spot, with great, fresh seafood. It's right on the Miami River, so try to get a seat outside next to the river. There's not a lot of boat traffic, but it's a nice environment.
The Montclair Eggshop Oakland, CA
An excellent restaurant for breakfast. Nothing too fancy, but they do breakfast well. Fun stuff for kids of all ages -- lots of trains, including one that runs along the wall.
Toshi Sushi Restaurant Oakland, CA
Tasty sushi, good service, and a nice atmosphere. All the sushi we had (tuna, salmon, mackrel) was very good, though the gyoza were just average.
Tra Vigne Saint Helena, CA
My wife and some friends and I ate at Tra Vigne for a special occasion. It was very good, but not perfect. One of the entrees was spicy beyond being flavorful to almost inedible. The other entrees were very, very good, and everything else (wine, dessert, service) was very good.
The restaurant and surrounding grounds are beautiful. Be sure to take some time to check them out. My only complaint is that it was pretty noise, in part due to the design of the restaurant -- high, reflective ceiling.
Overall I liked it, but with a few reservations.
Red Tractor Cafe Oakland, CA
We met friends there for brunch, and it was very good. Some of us had breakfast items, some of us had lunch items, and all were good. The breakfast items were especially good. It's pretty small, so while the cafeteria-style service is fast, finding a place to sit can take a while.
Bangkok Kitchen Concord, CA
On a recent visit, the food was good and the service was prompt, even though we were there during the busy lunch time rush. Plenty of options for vegetarians, but my companions said the meat dishes were good, too.
Las Montañas Concord, CA
The food was good but not spectacular -- no surprises Mexican food. The service was OK, but our server seemed fairly new and a bit unsure of herself. There was a largish lunch crowd, and that likely explained any lapses in speed.
The Station House Cafe Point Reyes Station, CA
Excellent food, good service (though it can be crowded), plus a pleasant outdoor seating area for nicer weather make this a must for meals when visiting Point Reyes. There's an interesting variety of food, including a number of vegetarian choices, fish and meat choices.
The only disappointment last time we were there were the tomatoes on the polenta dish. They were underripe and mealy, as out of season tomatoes frequently are.
Their web site is http://www.stationhousecafe.com/ and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.
Venezia Berkeley, CA
I hadn't been to Venezia in years, since before their move from further up University.
It's still very good, and the more spacious building they have now manages to keep some of the charm of the older place.
The foot is excellent, a good wine list and decent beer list. The service was very good, and our server was especially patient understanding our Swedish vistors.
Snowshoe Brewing Co. Sonora, CA
Very good beer (though I personally don't care for their Winterweizen) and pretty good food. Mostly the usual pub grub, but also a number of more interesting dishes like a smoked salmon quesadilla, available as either an appetizer or an entree. Limited number of vegi dishes, but they do have a few, as well as a number of low fat items.
Snowshow Brewing in Sonora is in a large, old building that used to belong to a nearby sawmill. It has a large bar and the brewing equipment is at one end of the room.
Oakdale Brewing Co. Oakdale, CA
Good beer, good service (though it was fairly empty when we were there, so service was easier), and decent pub grub make this a good spot to stop on your way to or from Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
Northbeach Cafe Sonora, CA
A pretty good Italian restaurant, somewhere between the heavy sauce American school and lighter Mediterranean style. Not a lot of vegi options, but a decent wine list and overall menu.
The Hop Yard Pleasanton, CA
No problems with slow service. We were there on a crowded evening, and after a brief wait for a table, we had good service.
The food is pretty good pub grub. Not many options for vegetarians (Garden Burger or salads), but the beer is the reason for going here. A wide variety of micro brews on tap, including some local (i.e., next door) Hoptown brews.
Thirsty Bear Brewing Co San Francisco, CA
Good food (I only tried the tapas), very good beer, good service. I was there for lunch recently so it was relatively quiet, but I can imagine in the evenings it can get pretty noisy. A bit more glitz and a little pricier than I look for in a brew pub, but very good nonetheless.
Tied House Cafe & Brewery Mountain View, CA
The food is good, albeit a little pricey for the quality and atmosphere, but my wife and I have always had very good service, even when it's busy, and the beer is very good. I wouldn't go so far as "great" because there are local brews I like more, but it's pretty good. There's a decent variety on the menu, though not too many options for vegetarians.
Barney's Oakland, CA
Great burgers, and alternatives for us non-meat eaters. Most if not all of their creations are available with hamburgers, chicken, or portobello mushrooms, plus garden burgers are an option. Yummy fries, good service (though they tend to be very busy), and a nice patio out back for dining during warmer weather.
The Barney's on Piedmont is currently undergoing renovation of some sort, though it is still open during the work.
Michael's American Vegetarian Diner Berkeley, CA
Alas, Michael's appears to be no longer. I drove by this evening and there's now a sushi restaurant in its place. The phone number is no longer in service. :-(
Pyramid Brewery & Alehouse Berkeley, CA
Good food, and excellent beer. A variety of food (burgers, pizza, fish, chicken, etc.) that goes well beyond "pub grub" in quality and variety.
The beers served are made there -- from the restaurant you can see the brewery equipment beyond a glass wall. With all the beers on tap, you can get some things you can't get in stores, like a yummy nitro stout or a smooth Draft Pale Ale (DPA).
Chez Tj Mountain View, CA
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The food was delicious, beautifully presented without being ostentacious, and in perfect portions to feel full but not unpleasantly so.The wine pairings went perfectly with the food; we didn't even look at the wine list. The service was great, too. According to a recent SJ Mercury review, Kirk Bruderer is now the chef, and has loads of experience. I couldn't fault with anything we were served.
