Second Avenue Kosher Deli New York, NY
OK, so five stars seems like a lot for a deli....but this place is extraordinary....when I asked New Yorkers for their recommendation as to the best Jewish deli in Manhattan....8 out of 10 said 2nd Ave Deli.....so we jumped in a cab (from mid town, about $8.00 including a good tip) and we went downtown for lunch. It was worth going out of our way (we could have easily gone to the Carnegie Deli on 7th). We had the best pastrami I have ever had (you can't get good pastrami outside of New York....certainly not here in SF Cal) potato pancakes...with all the trimings you will not be able to eat for hours.
Il Cantinori Restaurant New York, NY
Wonderful dinner....great ambiance.....good service....what more can you ask for...I had a wonderful dish featuring porcini mushrooms the flavor was so earthy it could have been truffles. My wife had the fresh fish (swordfish cooked in lemon butter with capers)... again executed perfectly...the only reason I give it only four stars is we discovered Babbo (110 Waverly Place) the following night.... Mario Batali's 2nd NY restaurant....and easily the best Italian restaurant I've ever had the pleasure of visiting....
Trattoria Dopo Teatro New York, NY
Wonderful food good service (cigar lounge downstairs). I had a great risotto with wild mushrooms...my wife had a great veal picotto.....we were eating late, but there was no let down in either service or quality....good mid town dining, just steps away from Times Square......
Shugrue's Hillside Grill Sedona, AZ
If you are visiting Sedona, Shugrue's is a must stop for dinner, The food is excellent, the views are spectacular (watch the sun go down behind the red rocks) the waitstaff is attentive without being intrusive....
L'Auberge Restaurant Sedona, AZ
This is a world class restaurant....everything on the menu looks appealing...so much so that we ended up ordering a little of everything (you know, appetizers galore)....the service was great with knowledgable waiters....compares with great French restaurants in SF, NY etc....you will end up spending about $150 per couple depending on your wine selection...but it is worth it!
Village Diner Red Hook, NY
If this is the place I think it is (visited last month for the fall changing of the colors) it has a sign indicating that it is the oldest diner in NY state. If it is...please do yourself a favor and go out of your way to eat breakfast or lunch here.... the biscuts and gravy were out of this world...my wife had a home made cinnamon roll....(much bigger and better than you could have expected)...it is typical diner fare served with love (the family that runs this place clearly cares about their customers and the food they serve). We are from Cal, SF Bay area...and I can guarantee you that there is nothing like Village Diner out here...also, if you are staying in the area...make sure you have dinner at the Beekmans Inn in Rhinebeck....one of the great dining experiences we have had throughout the US.
Emeril's Restaurant New Orleans, LA
Emeril's, Nola's and Galatoires (pardon my spelling...this is from memory...which at my age is going fast)...these three Restaurants are the premier restaurants in the City, each giving a different vision...the history, the fusion....and the tradition....Emeril Legasse has achieved a remarkable feat in creating restaurants that maintain his quality and innovative menue whether he is there or not...truly a mark of a culinary genius!
Gualala Hotel Gualala, CA
The Gualala Hotel is a great tradition for us....if you ever eaten at the Union Hotel in Occidental...you know I'm talking about great family style italian dining....actually...the Gualala is better than the Union Hotel...and don't forget to have a few drinks in the bar and catch some of the local flavor...loggers...fisherman, hippies and the retired....all treat it as a local...
Horatio's San Leandro, CA
I normally don't rate "chain restaurants" but I can make an exception for Horatio's....all of the food that I have eaten there over the last few years has been "very good" ....not outstanding, not necessarily gourmet...but certainly worth the money, and quite frankly given the beautiful setting...probably one of the best deals in San Leandro....having said all that...I can truthfully say that when I want a "prime rib" dinner this is where I come. It is every bit as good as the House of Prime Rib in the City... and clearly better than other nearby steakhouses serving prime rib...forget what you have heard about it in the past (I agree with Marianne's comments above)...this place is a great alternative to the other chains nearby...
Citron Oakland, CA
Let me cast my vote with those above who enjoyed the delighful patio dining...the imaginative entres...(appetizers.....I love their appetizers.....you can try really innovative taste combinations to your hearts content....)...but the one thing I think I will always remember...the wait staff's true dedication to their customer's enjoyment....they really go all out to make your evening there a memorable one...(in fact, it is because of my good experience with the wait staff that I rate Citron 5 stars...without the great service it is just another very good 4 star East Bay eatery...
Gamble Mill Tavern Bellefonte, PA
This place is too good to believe...the food is world class... the setting is remarkable (the converted old mill is better than you could expect)...the waitstaff is very good (it helps to be near State College)...we are from the SF Bay area...so food is like a religion to us....I can't tell you how appealling the butternut ravioli or the venison with rasberry/sage sauce was to our senses, but the wild mushroom turnover closed the door on me....I hope to make a return trip....there's so much more to try.
Cafe Lido Capitola, CA
Great pasta...good service with an adequate wine selection...(but do try their best Chianti...Banfi I believe). This has been one of our favorites for years (and now with the demise of the Balzac Bistro, even more so). Kid friendly...and a great location (away from the madness of the waterfront) with a nice view. I had the spaghetti puntanesca this time, but all of the dishes have been well prepared, with the pasta cooked perfectly every time. Try the carbonara if you like the richness of bacon with a cream sauce.
El-Toro Bravo Capitola, CA
This is good Mexican food, kid friendly..good service.... conveniently located in the Village across the street from the Cafe Lido, and near the waterfront shops and beach.
Cook House Restaurant Capitola, CA
Had breakfast with family here...it looked good from the outside, lots of people inside...not a chain (one of my rules of the road), with a name that indicated more than it could deliver (have you ever eaten breakfast at the Samoan Cook House in Eureaka....). The breakfast was lousy...three of us had eggs over easy...the eggs were overcooked, most were broken...the rest was just indifferent.
Anthony's Pier 4 Restaurant Boston, MA
Anthony's had been recommended to me by several people before my last trip to Boston...I was a little leary of going to an 'institution' such as this because they are often living on their reputation, often earned long ago (Durgin Place fits this category nicely). They knew I wanted Lobster...its one of the few things we don't get here in California ( I live in SF Bay area), and they felt comfortable in recommending Anthony's saying I would get great Lobster, a nice dining experience, (not the casual experience of the No Name) and a terrific view. I was not disappointed on any of these counts. I was very happy with a broad selection of Lobster presentations (I had mine broiled with drawn butter, while my dining companions had two different styles (I don't recall the names, but they were good nonetheless). We had several oyster dishes (including Oysters Rockefeller) and Lobster Bisque before our entree, and I was convinced even before we had touched the lobster that we had made the right choice in Anthony's. Our waiter was a seasoned professional, always attentive but never intrusive. (and by the way, Anthony himself seated us at a window table with a great view of the Boston skyline lit up like a Christmas tree. So feel free to discount any negative comments you may hear about Anthony's, give it another try...it is certainly one of my 'must' stops on my future Boston trips.
Masa's Restaurant San Francisco, CA
Let me cast my vote with most of those above who rate this as one of the WORLDS great restaurants. It is my favorite "special dinner" place...the one place that I know I will always get something in- credibly innovative, prepared and presented with the love of some- one dedicated to making dining an art (nourishing to both the body and the soul). The only problem I have with the menu is my desire to order everything. I can only second those above who raved about the fois gras in truffel sauce....I had not imagined anything could taste so rich (almost sinful) and yet remain so sublime. There is not a single 3 Star (Guide Michelin) restaurant that is not in the same price range as Masa's so price is not an issue....make reserva- tions here for any important anniversary...you'll not be disappointed!
le Coq D'or Carmel, CA
This restaurant is a very special find for me....it's a little off the beaten track but well worth the walk to have what I found to be an excellent meal in a warm and cozy environment. First off...the selection is awesome...with only the best representations of both French and German cuisine. For me it was an opportunity to order "good" German food again (it seems like every- one has abandoned this style of food in favor of the popular "fusion" styles). For an appetizer we ordered the Tarte de L'Onion (Alsatian style) that was pure heaven. My wife ordered the Kase Spatzle with roasted onions (again this was to die for). For the main course I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel, not only because it is traditional, but also because it tells you a lot about the quality of the ingrediantes used. It was as good as I have ever had! It was veal cooked to perfection, turning out light and tender. It came with a ramkin of potatos au Gratin and mixed fresh vegatables. My wife had the scallops in an orange buerre blanc sauce served over linguini...the sauce was perfect and the scallops were as tender as could be (cooked lightly). I observed our neighbors as their order of Beef Rouladen and Confit De Canard (slow roasted boaned half duck, with an orange glaze) arrived and heard their approving comments regarding both of these dishes...I was almost tempted to order another entre just to try another dish. But we wisely opted for the dessert instead...my wife went for the chocolate souffle (she will order souffle at the drop of a hat) and I ordered the Marillen Knodel (apricot filled dumpling served with drawn butter, sugar and cinnamon. Again I thought I'd died and gone to heaven...then our neighbors dessert arrived, Tarte Tatin (french apple tart) and Kaiserschmarren (a crepe with almonds, raisins and orange curaco). Again we heard the comments about "this must be what heaven is like". Please do yourself a favor and go to this restaurant when you are visiting Carmel. You will have no better meals in town!
Ciao Bella Ben Lomond, CA
This place is too good to allow the above reviews to stand unchallenged. First off, it is without a doubt one of the most unusual and/or romantic settings in the San Lorenzo Valley. The eclectic design elements in the bar and around the restaurant provide for a quirky, slightly camp feeling but retaining the best from the "50's kitsch". But you don't repeatedly go back to a restaurant for nostalgia...it is the food that will keep you coming back over and over again. It is without qualification the best Italian restaurant in the area and one of the better one's in all the southbay/Santa Cruz area. The pasta is prepared flawlessly in all the traditional styles. There is garlic enough here for even those of you who measure all others against "Cafe Sport" in SF. Please come here with your friends, sit outside surrounded by a redwood ring of giants and order a meal you will remember!
Caffe Sport San Francisco, CA
This is indeed one of the best Italian restaurants in all the Bay area...I really think it deserves about 4 1/2 stars (marked down for indifferent wine list and a fun but funky dining area). I don't know who provided the detailed info above but most of it is wrong (outdoor dining? reservations...ha! and you better bring cash) What does this restaurant do right? Almost everything..from nagging you about what to order...to preparing the "best" pasta and garlic scampi dishes known to man. This is not about Northern Italian cuisine with its fine traditions...this is Siciliano style with the robust flavors of the south (with seafood predominately featured). If there is one restaurant in N. Beach that will provide your out of town guests with that special SF feeling, this is it!
North Beach Restaurant San Francisco, CA
This is the N. Beach restaurant that changed all the rules. This is not just a "spagehetti and meatball joint" I've been coming here for about 27 years...and I can attest that it is always one of the best Italian restaurants in all the Bay area. I'll never forget the first time we ate here, it was on our honeymoon, and Lorenzo bought us dessert and after diner cordials. But more importantly, he joined us and another nearby couple in a delightful and animated conversation about SF and places for us to see (this was when we lived in Santa Barbara , before we moved to the Bay area). Since then, we go there whenever we want to remember SF as a smaller, friendlier town. Oh, and we always go there for the best in Milano style Italian cuisine...that's really what this is all about! It remains our favorite N. Beach dining experience (followed closely by Caffe Sport) and the one we consistantly refer to our friends. Oh, and about the service...it should be obvious from the comments above...it has always been good...professional...not intrusive.. but still friendly and warm.
