| Speisekammer | Alameda, CA | |

I agree with Kevin...this is the real thing! We are always looking
for good restaurants...and I am partial to good German food (particularly
since there are so few around these days). There is a wonderful
selection of beer...5 of us went out to dinner there last weekend.
We all had something different..I had the Wienerschnitzal with
spaetzle...my wife had the Veal Wienerschnitzal, and others
had a beef dish cooked in a dark ale or the Saurerbraten...all
dishes were prepared well...they looked good and they tasted
even better..other than the Coq d'Or in Carmel, this is the
best German food in N. California...

| Vreni's Biergarten | Duluth, GA | |
|
This place was a wonderful find. We were staying in Norcross (business
meeting at the Wingate Inn) and I brought my whole team here for
dinner. Most of my team had not had good German food before so they
didn't know what to expect. Everyone came away with a wonderful
experience saying this was the best Restaurant we had visited
(out of 5 major metropolitan areas, including Boston, Chicago,
Atlanta, Dallas and Newport Beach CA).
Everything was good...we had great appetizers of minature home
made german wurst....great entres....I had Rolladen (don't
remember the spelling, but it is rolled flank steak with bacon
and pickle in the middle, then braised for about 1/1/2 hours in
a wonderful dark gravy...I would drive back here even if it meant
a 45 min drive from Atlanta (or Marietta where I frequently stay)....

| Benbow Inn | Garberville, CA | |
|
I've got to agree with Robert...this is the place to stay
while visiting the Redwoods (unless you are inclined to camp).
The Inn is a living example of how to preserve the best from the
past with the needs of the present. Room prices seem to go all over
the map...the last time we were there (in August mind you), we
reserved 2 suites at about $140 ea. I think the regular rooms were
about $90 a night...I don't find this expensive for the class
of hotel...the food in the Restaurant was memorable as was the
dining experience...good food...great waiters...and an even
nicer atmosphere from the old dining room. I will be back...

| Da Giovanni's | Carmel, CA | |
|
Food is ok...but I still miss the Clam Box...Don Giovanni's
took over the space occupied by the Clam Box on Mission...and
it just hasn't been the same since.

| La Pinata #2 | San Leandro, CA | |
|
I give them 4 stars for consistency (and they have become my favorite
Mexican restaurant in SL...it is a hard choice since most of us
go to different restaurants for different dishes). Many of the
criticisms shown below are true...they are always busy...don't
always check back with you to see if you need anything else...but
the food is consistantly good...the menu is much broader than
many other Mexican restaurants around (good selection of seafood
on the menu)....you must be prepared to wait if you come at normal
dinner time...but that says a lot about their quality. I remember
when the Acapulco in Alameda had lines out in front all night long...good
Margaritas...and of course good Mexican beer....I guess I'm
just a sucker for old fashioned Mexican food with mashed refried
beans (don't give me any of that blackbean crap)along with
tortillas, enchiladas and rice (half order is only $6.50)or
go for the Chili Verde for a killer meal (but bring an appetite...there
is lots to eat).

| Calhoun's | Knoxville, TN | |
|
I've eaten here on several occassions (I think it was at this
address...I didn't know there were two Calhoun's on
Kingston Pike..the other is at 10020 Kingston Pike with a tele
# of 865-673-3444)and I find the food to be exceptional...I guess
I just like a dry rub based rib (not unlike Memphis ribs I've
had in the past). Additionally, they have a wonderful hot sauce
that they serve (and sell if you are so inclined to buy). I love
the decor...I would characterize it as early farm revival (with
lots of farm implements on the walls and ceilings).

| Henry Chung's Original Hunan Restaurant | San Francisco, CA | |
|
This is still my favorite Chinese restaurant in SF...we live
about 20 miles away in the E. Bay...but at least once a month, we
drive to the city exclusively to get our fix at the Hunan. Like
others who have written below, we have been coming here since
it first opened (remember when they were in a small storefront
on Kearney....), and yes there have been changes in menue to accomodate
some of the less adventuresome "lo fon" (I haven't
gotten over the loss of the smoked hamhocks I used to order). Still,
you can't beat starting the meal with the onion cakes...then
ordering one of Henry's signature dishes....(bless him
for what he has left for all of us to enjoy). I particularly like
the Harvest Pork...but Henry's Special in the smoked meats
is hard to beat as well. My wife always orders the Hot and spicy
beef...marry the heat with a cold beer and you may have found paradise...I
know I have on many occasions on Sansome.

| Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill | Koloa, HI | |
|
I generally concur with the comments below....food is excellent...wine
selection is good...service is good with aloha spirit...I guess
the thing I like most about Roy's is it is a great opportunity
to sample a lot of small dishes (with extremes in flavors)...I
think we almost always just order a bunch of appetisers...and
skip the entrees. This is my second favorite Restaurant on the
Island...(see the Beach House just down the road towards Spouting
Horn)
|
||
| Brick Oven Pizza | Kalaheo, HI | |
|
OK so 4 stars is a bit much for a Pizza joint...but we've been
coming here for over 20 years and the quality stays good...the
family keeps the aloha spirit...and the service is great. Fare
is normal...I guess the reason I like it so much is that it is a change
of pace from all of the chi chi places...very inexpensive...and
yet still very satisfying.
|
||
| Pomodoro Ristorante Italiano | Kalaheo, HI | |
|
If you've staying on the Island for any length of time, you
are probably starting to crave Italian food (I can't go more
than a week without pasta)...I usually fill the need with Pizza
(see Brick Oven Pizza across the street)....but this last trip
we ended up going back to Pomodoro twice because the first time
was soo nice. The waitstaff and owners are all very personable...but
the real test was the food...it is the best Italian food we have
had on the Island (slightly better than the more expensive Casa
De Amici) at a very affordable price...all in all it is a price
performer and another nice dining experience in paradise.

| Galatoire's Restaurant Inc | New Orleans, LA | |
|
If I could only go to one restaurant in NO...I think I would settle
for Galatoire's. This is real old fashion New Orleans...ladies
still in hats and gloves...gentlemen in suits. The food is classic....I
can eat anything here and be happy but I always want to order crawfish
et to fe (I can only attempt to spell it phonetically)....the
best part of this is, it is right on Burbon Street...you don't
have to go somewhere to eat...its right there....
|
||
| Fifth Wheel | San Leandro, CA | |
|
Russ Bryant nailed it...this is classic truck stop food...only
breakfast and lunch (for me there is no better breakfast spot
in town...Emil Villa's Original Hickory Pit was once the
best...still good but not the same). I especially love the French
Toast (made with Texas Toast)...but anything you order here
will be good, greasy....and as Emerile Lagasse says...you can
feel the love...this is a family owned and operated business...and
despite the difficulties in getting seated, it is always worth
the wait.
|
||
| Mutt Hut | San Leandro, CA | |
|
I agree with David, except I can only give it 3 stars...the dogs
are really good...the service is normal...the location is ok...basically
it is the kind of place you can take your kids after their basebal
or soccer games...and have fun with it. I've been coming
here ever since it re-opended.
|
||
| East Village Seafood Restaurant | San Leandro, CA | |
|
I think this is one of the better Chinese restaurants in SL...I
guess that doesn't say much for SL..The food is generally
good...they have several different styles represented including
Szechuan, Hunan and Mandarin...but it is primarily Cantonese.
Although I wouldn't necessarily classify it as New Hong
Kong style, the live seafood makes this better than average for
this style. My wife loves the Shrimp and honey walnuts while I
like virtually anything served with the black bean sauce (fish...crab
etc).

||
| J.l. Kitchen | San Leandro, CA | |
|
There is just no accounting for taste...this is my favorite Chinese
restaurant in SL....I've been coming here for almost 20
years (actually Julie started in a small narrow shop with 7 stools
and no tables which was almost next door...before they tore it
down and built the new building (to the west of her Shop). Apart
from the fact that I think she does traditional Cantonese food
very well...I love the fact that she will make specials (if she
has the ingrediantes). One thing she makes for me all the time
is Lop Chong (I have no idea how to spell it properly...but its
Chinese sausage...fixed a number of ways but I prefer it with
chow mein noodles..some onions and maybe cabbage but no bean
sprouts....or perhaps it is the Spicy Shrimp black bean chow
fun she makes (like my favorite lunch stop in SF...the B &
M Cafe on First. JL Kitchen (or J & L as I have known it) is another
family owned and operated restaurant..so you will see the kids
helping their mother occasionally (as well as other relatives)...for
my money, it is the best deal in town...no beer or wine served...but
if you were to bring you're favorite beverage in, Julie will
be happy to provide glasses (she doesn't always have a wine
opener...) with no corkage fee...I hope you add a little something
extra in the tip to take care of that...there is absolutely no
atmosphere here....and most of her business is take out...but
take it from me, this is a great alternative to the ubiquitous
fast food franchises....
|
||
| Yuet Lee Seafood Restaurant Inc | San Francisco, CA | |
|
As Silver said, this is a great late night restaurant...no atmosphere
(formica tables...and neon lights....but wonderful sea food...I
love the salt and pepper squid...and the black bean clams (even
better is the black bean crab) and the spicy garlic crab...and
the fried catfish....its all too good...except for the Fog City
Diner, where else can you go for good eats after the theater? Oh...I
forgot...they don't serve beer or wine but they have been
very accomodating to my bringing in a six pack of beer...available
a short walk up Stockton at a local liquor store.
|
||
| B & M Mei Sing Restaurant | San Francisco, CA | |
|
This is my all time favorite lunch spot in SF....it's dirt
cheap (most of the dishes are actually under $5.00), with large
portions...fresh ingredients...made to order (not buffett
style)....with the most efficient distribution system in the
City. You order your lunch...they give you a colored chip with
a number on it....you take it to your table...and they find you
with your meal in a few minutes...color coding tells them if you
are upstairs or downstair. You sit at any table where there is
room (no one stands on any formalities...everyone shares tables...strike
up a conversation with your tablemates if you are so inclined...or
not. Apart from the ease of eating here...the real payoff is the
quality...my favorite dish here is spicy shrimp chow fun with
black bean sauce...(it comes with hot chilli and onions). Its
not on the menue..but they will make it for you if you order it...this
is too good to miss, especially if you work in the downtown area...you
need a place like this for the inexpensive but hearty lunch that's
not fast food.
|
||
| Lo-Coco's Restaurant & Pizzeria | Oakland, CA | |
|
I just have to update my review....I'm still eating here
frequently...the meals are just as good as ever...(I'm
still addicted to their sauteed squid)...what has really changed
is that they no longer have dago red for their wine selection...they
have upgraded their available wines to some very nice (and very
reasonable) merlots, cabs, and good chianti's. And they
still have the most open policy regarding corkage...no fee....they
treat you so nicely here, I's sure everyone adds extra in
their tip to cover the extra work the wait staff has to undertake....
|
||
| Shadowbrook | Capitola, CA | |
|
This is a destination restaurant...we have stayed in Capitola
on a number of occasions...great summer retreat...and we always
eat at least once here. However, I think most people eating here
are driving from somewhere else...that says a lot about the quality
and the atmosphere of the Shadowbrook. The artichoke soup is
one of their specialities...the rest of the menu looks like standard...upscale
American restaurant fare...various fish dishes, steak and
prime rib, good salads and desserts...the food is good but its
not the reason to come here...this is the most romantic restaurant
on the coast....the grounds are lovely (be sure to walk down then
take the funicular back up the hill).
|
||
| Tora Ristorante Trattoria | Richmond Hill, ON | |
|
Had a wonderful dinner here. Started with the fois gras...the
waitress was nice enough to pair it with a wonderful demi sec
For a main course, I rodered the rack of lamb....which I was able
to pair with a Santa Barara Pinot Noir...I ordered the creme brulee
for the dessert...like most things Canadian...I was pleasantly
surprised to find such a nice Italian restaurant in the suburbs...(I
know Toronto has wonderful food...). If you are visiting from
afar, do yourself a favor and spend a few hours here..you won't
regret it.
