| Oakland Grill | Oakland, CA | |

I'm with sharon d...this is the best breakfast in Oakland.
If you like to go to the famers market in Jack London square...stop
in here first...it will make the rest of your day seem better.
If you think you have to go to Berkeley to get good food (i.e. Bette's
Oceanview Diner), do yourself a favor an try this place, great
food, great people...and way less attitude.

| Cafe San Estevan | Santa FE, NM | |
|
Great Southwestern and authentic Mexican food. This is a little
off the beaten trail (but really within walking distance of the
Plaza) but really worth it if you are looking for another side
of Santa Fe's Southwestern heritage. I was in the mood for
something traditional, so I ordered Lamb Chops which were done
to perfection...my wife on the otherhand wanted a claissical
Mexican dinner, and she got the best Chilie Relleno she has had
in a number of years as well as terrific beans and a melange of vegetables.
We were told that their specialty for dessert was a Flan made with
goats milk...(I know it doesn't sound that good)...it was
in fact the best Flan either of us have ever had. This place is good!

| Cowgirl Bar B Q and Western Grill | Santa FE, NM | |
|
This place supprised us. I was just looking for something simple
and light (I know...BBQ hardly ever is light)...we had eaten
a wonderful lunch at Pasquals and since we didn't have reservations,
the Coyote Cafe was out of the question, so we walked down Quadalupe
Street and settled on the Cowgirl...I loved its funky exterior...but
was charmed by the old time interior and photos that cover most
of the walls. To get to the basics, the BBQ is good (not great, but
certainly good...just what I was looking for)...the beans we
great and the salsa was out of this world (made with pintos, cilantro,
chilies, oil and vinigar). But the best part of the evening was
the entertainment...this place rocks...good music and a great
group of regulars in the bar. You will love this place for the local
color it provides.

| Upper Crust Pizza | Santa FE, NM | |
|
This place is too good to miss...you are eating at the best Pizza
joint in town according to locals voting results, (good pizza,
good beer, great people running the joint), you are right on the
old Santa Fe Trail (the address above doesn't do it justice),
you are right next door to (1) the oldest house in the US (according
to them...don't know what it means, but it dates back to 1647
or so), (2) next to the oldest church in US, dates back to 1610.
I loved the pizza with new mexico chilies, mushrooms, olives
and cheese.

| Pasqual's | Santa FE, NM | |
|
Bernie, you are wrong...wrong....wrong!
Look at the above section where it says "members who like
this restaurant also like..." reads like the SF Bay area
who's who in food. I don't know how that happened, but
I gotta agree with Casey...my only regret is that we didn't
manage to eat there more often (only in town for a few days). This
place is the Cafe at Chez Panisse....that means prices are reasonable,
the atmosphere is casual, the decor is in touch with its surroundings,
and its staff is world class in a Berkeley style eatery. Clearly
the upstairs version of the venerated Berkeley restaurant.

||
| Coyote Cafe | Santa FE, NM | |
|
The Coyote Cafe is to Santa Fe as Chez Panise is to Berkeley...both
turned the world around with respect to the type of food being
offered. We had a wonderful dinner with great southwestern flavors....but
I think they are getting a little complacent...the execution
was good but not great. If we had not eaten at the Anazasi the next
night I might not have known any better....by all means, have
at least one meal here...but do try some of the newer restaruants
in town...you may be in for a surprize.

| Plaza Restaurant | Santa FE, NM | |
|
I ate breakfast here every morning for a week...I tried something
different each day and found nothing to quibble with. They have
wonderful Mexican dishes with the great local chilies, and you
can get the more traditional American dishes...their homefries
are homemade and the best I've ever eaten. They are on the
third generation running the restaruant...beginning in 1918....situated
right on the plaza, diagonally across from the Palace of the Governors.
This is the place for both locals and travelers to meet and enjoy
the beginning of another day in paradise.

| Anasazi Restaurant | Santa FE, NM | |
|
This is the best restaruant we found in Santa Fe during our recent
travels there. The food was world class southwestern which means
great sauces (chiles and other spicy dishes). The service was
warm and friendly without being intrusive. The dining room is
comfortable and warm without being too cramped or crowded. Do
yourself a favor and have at least one dinner here while in Santa
Fe...you will have a wonderful memory for a lifetime!

| Carpaccio | Menlo Park, CA | |
|
This is where I bring my customers for dinner and lunch. I can count on consistantly good Italian food and a pleasant experience. The atmosphere is good (great in the summer when the windows are open in the front room and you're sitting next to the sidewalk)...the pasta is good, but I like the veal and seafood dishes and I especially like their "Carpaccio". I haven't had this dish so well prepared since "Ciao's" closed in the city.

| 124 Cottage Street Restaurant | Bar Harbor, ME | |
|
Best lobster we had in Maine...(went to several other local places
including some well publicized lobster ponds...this was hands
down the nicest...everything had the homemade taste and feel
to it....you can spend more in Bar Harbor, but you are not going
to get a better lobster for your money...and by all means, if the
weather is permitting, eat al fresco....the front porch is an
extra homey effect.

| Legal Sea Foods, Inc | Boston, MA | |
|
Great seafood for a good downtown location (if you've got
the time try the no name). Ate with 2 other friends, each of us getting
a lobster and all three different...I love plain boiled lobster
with drawn butter...but I was really impressed with the Lobster
Thermidor one guest had and the Lobster Newberg tasted devine...the
nice thing here is that it is dressy without being formal...and
not stuffy at all. Like I said, its good lobster near your hotel...

| Left Bank | Menlo Park, CA | |
|
Food is good but at these prices you expect more. Go to the Pot Au
Feu if you feel like French...it has an authentic French country
feel to it.
|
||
| Buddy Freddys Restaurant | Plant City, FL | |
|
I can't comment on the dinners, but I can tell you that this
is one of the nicest breakfast places I have experienced in FL.
The wrap around front porch makes you think of Florida at an earlier
age...and the rocking chairs really add to the charm. But I go
here for the food....and I plan my day to be sure I'm here between
7:00 and 9:00 AM ....waitstaff is very friendly, at least to this
this yankee...oh yeah, go ahead and order the grits instead of
the hash browns...they'll make you feel right at home.

| Bix | San Francisco, CA | |
|
Cindy says this is turn of the century...I call it classic Art
Deco...whatever it is, it has become one of my favorite stops
when I'm at this end of town....I love to bring out of towners
here...dinner is great American classic food...but the Lounge
atmosphere is what this is all about...by all means, order a great
martini...or better yet...how about a bottle of French Champagne...then
sit back and enjoy the ambience and listen to a swinging jazz set
(or a sultry torch singer accompanied by only a piano)....I give
this joint 5 stars because it delivers on what it promises...it's
all out front....and if you pay attention, you will see Humphrey
Bogart and Lauren Bacall enter the Bar towards the shank of the
night

||
| Samoa Cookhouse | Samoa, CA | |
|
I've only eaten Breakfasts here...but it certainly is worth
a trip out of your way just to see this landmark from the past. You
get what you would expect from a country style restaurant...lots
of hearty food without any frills. The food is good...the experience
is better.
|
||
| Mudd's | San Ramon, CA | |
|
I genuinely like Mudds...its not the greatest restaurant..but
the setting and the quality of the food (the menu and the wine)
make it a true value and a dependable destination when looking
for a pleasant night out. I have found the waitstaff to be consistantly
good...attentive without hovering...I think the one thing
that keeps me coming back to Mudds is the knowledge that they know
their strengths and their limits...and they know enough not
to stretch themselves beyond their strengths. I know that sounds
like a backhanded compliment..but I see this as an endearing
strength...somewhat unusual today when most chefs think taking
risks with the customers time and money are acceptable behavior.

||
| J D 's Restaurant | Castro Valley, CA | |
|
YEP....this is a great place for breakfast....especially during
the summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air (but
protected from the street noise)...but don't forget JDs
for lunch or dinner also...I love their French Dip sandwich....other
dishes are good...but I keep coming back for the FD...I guess
its because I can't find another restaurant with a French
Dip as good....so there.
|
||
| Sazio Ristorante Italiano | Castro Valley, CA | |
|
Actually I would rate this 3 1/2 stars....the food is very good
with my favorite being the veal dishes....their veal saltimboca
is as good as any I've had in the east bay....I think the pasta
dishes are mixed...the canneloni is ok (but I'm comparing
it to the canneloni served at Le Cocos on Piedmont Ave in Oakland)..I
don't know why they serve mashed potatoes with the entres....I
would have thought they would use this as an opportunity to show
off their skills with pasta and sauces...the wine list and bar
are good for a small dinner house (I like the list at La Maison better...I
think the chef there takes a more personal interest in the selection).
Still, if you have a hankering for Italian food in Castro Valley
(or Hayward-San Leandro) I don't think you will find a better
meal.

||
| Speisekammer | Alameda, CA | |
|
OK...so I'm voting twice...what I really meant to say is
there are so few German restaurants around....not that there
were so few Germans around...oh well you get the point.
|
||
| ABC Sea Food Restaurant | San Mateo, CA | |
|
Apart from the fresh seafood, this is one of the better Dim Sum
places on the peninsula. They have a vast array of choices so don't
be too anxious to take the first dishes they bring by...they have
all the traditional dishes like hargow, suimei, and chowsuibo
(forgive the spelling...if I don't do it phonetically,
you wouldn't have a clue as to what I was trying to say). But
they also have the less well featured...such as chicken feet,
foil wrapped chicken, and barbeque ribs. This is a great place
to take friends and exchange plates for a wonderful and sometimes
unusual lunch.
