Jersey Joe's Belmonte, CA
Anyone considering this restuarant should realize that it moved a while ago.
The new location is 1480 El Camino in Belmont, near Ralston, on the corner of Harbor.
Their new number is 650-592-7317
I only ate at the Redwood City place once, but I assume the new location is the same, and I review on that basis.
The portions here are huge. It's a hole in the wall type of place where you buy a bag of chips and a soda with your hoagy. I've got to say that I didn't really like the cheese sauce much which they put on the beef. That's just a matter of personal taste, though. If you're a real fan of Philly cheesesteaks, which I'm not, I'm sure you'll love this place.
Milano Restaurant San Francisco, CA
This is a wonderful little place. The service is very friendly and the food is very good. It definitely has the atmosphere of a place frequented by locals. The seating is a little cramped, but somehow it didn't seem to be too much of a problem.
It's the sort of place where you want to eat slowly and enjoy good conversation with a few friends.
It's a cloth-tablecloth kind of place, so you won't want to show up in shorts and a tank top, but beyond that it isn't too snooty for someone wearing jeans.
Fior D'Italia Restaurant San Francisco, CA
This place is a little overrated. It may be the oldest Italian restaurant in SF, but it's not the best. That being said, however, it isn't the worst either. I had a reasonably good pasta and chicken dish and tiramisu for dessert and both were fairly good.
It's a very traditional high leatherback chair and booth Italian restaurant. I have to go along with Bob Mitchell in that you want to dress up a bit and not be seated in the front room.
You'll definitely need to take advantage of the valet parking.
Overall, this place is fine, but for better food I recommend Milano.
Applewood Inn Menlo Park, CA
The best pizza of its type in the bay area. The best pizza of any kind within, say, 5 miles.
The pizza here is what I would call medium thickness. It's not pan, but it's not New York thin either. It has a really good chewy crust and the toppings are top rate.
I can't speak to the foo-foo gourmet pizzas because I find them an abomination to pizza in general. The standard pizzas here, which you can order to your own taste, are great. The Italian sausage is crumbled on, and is quite tasty.
It's first come first served, so arrive a little early. If it's crowded you sometimes have to wait like a vulture for a table to clear. The decor is like a college crowd place, but the actual clientele is more varied than that. It's a bit loud, but not obnoxious or anything.
For a good tasty unpretentious meal, I highly recommend this place.
Country Gourmet & Sunnyvale, CA
This is a nice place to go for brunch. They serve upscale gourmet breakfast and lunch food.
My favorite is the omelette with ham and cream cheese. You can feel your heart suddenly have to struggle to keep pumping, but it's worth it.
Galeoti's Redwood City, CA
I was a little less impressed with this place. The pizza is okay, but it's way overpriced for what it is. Don't get take-and-bake there because they charge the same amount as a regular pizza. For the same quality pizza at a better price, check out Papa Murphy's on Woodside.
Applewood Pizza Mountain View, CA
People should know that this is a takeout-only restaurant. There isn't so much as a single table in the place.
Chico`s Tacos Sunnyvale, CA
This is a fairly good semi-fast food Mexican place. It is clean, and fast. The interior is fairly pleasant. The food is well above Taco Bell, but a little below a good Mexican restaurant with waiters and the whole bit. They give you free chips and the salsa is fairly good. If you're on a tight budget, I recommend it.
Max's Redwood City, CA
Overall this is a good place for sandwiches, pasta, and other dishes. Their french fries are outstanding. Steer clear of the hamburgers, though. They tend to give you large portions but they charge a little more too. The desserts are good and large. The atmosphere is pleasant, but can be noisy when the place is crowded. The service can be slow at times also. The waiters tend to think you're their best friend. Overall I do recommend this place.
Mountain Mike Pizza Redwood City, CA
Good, solid, pizza. Nothing special but nothing bad. The crust is good but not outstanding. Pronto makes a better pizza, but if you're looking for a good place to hang out and eat pizza you can do worse than Mtn. Mike's.
Spankys Cafe Redwood City, CA
This is a fairly good place to get a burger or a sandwich. This used to be a little hole in the wall deli with a fly problem but they have revamped their location. They still have some flies, but the decor is more bar-like now.
De-Martini's Sandwich Shop Redwood City, CA
This is a little hole in the wall sandwich shop that you wouldn't even suspect being where it is. It's located in an industrial area east of 101 off the Marsh Road exit. They make excellent sandwiches. Be sure to have them add "garlic sauce" to your sandwich, you'll be glad you did. Their sandwiches are also large so you won't leave hungry. In addition to sandwiches they also have an assortment of other foods. Some are just from the frozen food section of Costco, but others are genuinely good. I recommend the javier if your cholesterol count is too low.
Pronto Redwood City, CA
This place is strictly take-out. They don't have so much as a single chair to sit down on, so don't go there if you're looking for a full restaurant. The pizza is excellent. It is thin crust, baked in a wood fired oven right in front of you. The sauce has a slightly sweeter taste than usual. The toppings are good, but nothing out of the ordinary. I recommend Pronto highly.
Osteria Palo Alto, CA
A reasonably good fancy-italian place. Selection is quite limited. I had a special ravioli-chicken dish. It was fine but wasn't too different from many other Italian places. For dessert I had the chocolate torte. It was a bit too sweet, if you can believe that. A friend had the flan and recommends it. I'd say this place is a little overpriced for what you get.
Taxi's Hamburgers Palo Alto, CA
Good, not great, burgers. They are generous with the fries and the fries are quite good. My shake had a lot of ice crystals in it which is a big minus in my book. If you want a burger and you're in the area, this is a good place to go.
Caffe Verona Palo Alto, CA
A decent coffee house. A good selection of food which puts them significantly ahead of most coffee houses. Good sandwiches. Very good desserts. They are a bit overpriced and the tables are not meant for a real sitdown meal.
