| Arizona Sno N Subs Inc | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I didn't know they changed the name, but this is the original Sno
Oasis....home of the Sno-Da, my FAVORITE summer drink....and
that is saying something, considering the summers we have in
Phoenix! For those not in the know, a sno-da is a blend of flavored
sno and your favorite soda, and they are absolutely amazing.
And yes, I go here for the sno, but the subs here are NOT your average
run of the mill sub shop fare, but are pretty darn good, and well
thought out. If you go to ASU, this place is a must.

| College Street Deli | Tempe, AZ | |
|
This may be the unofficial cosmic center of the ASU universe.
And ironically, I don't go there as often as I should. But this
is college life in a nutshell....get a good breakfast, lunch,
dinner, have a beer, or fruit juice, or soda, watch the game, read
the paper, check out the opposite sex, head here before or after
a Sun Devil game, go here before hitting the bars, come here alone
or in groups.....many things come and go at ASU, but the College
Street Deli is one of the few rocks. If you are looking for a place
to make your home away from home, there are few places that are
a better starting point than this. One drawback.....peak times
here, you WILL stand in line.

| In Season Deli | Tempe, AZ | |
|
Many people label this is a vegetarian or health nut eatery, but
heck, my friends have dragged me here, and even my carnivorous
palate was impressed with some of the fare. No, it is NOT the place
to go if you are looking for a good medium rare burger, but if you
want a pleasant surprise that might just be good for you, or if
you are a vegetarian looking for a good place to eat that actually
has a menu NOT centered around meat-eaters, this is the place.
Finding it might be a bit challenging (talk about being hidden!),
but it is worth it.

| Stan's Metro Deli | Tempe, AZ | |
|
This place is good, but because it has so long been somewhat of
a traditional place for students to go, it seems just a bit expensive
for what you get. The food is good, don't get me wrong, but hardly
what I would call exceptional, and the prices, while not as exhorbitant
and some of the newer, ritzier establishments on Mill, are still
not quite what I would call student-friendly. Worth a stop, though....make
up your own mind.

| Coffee Plantation The Restaurants | Tempe, AZ | |
|
One of my favorite places to go when I am not barhopping...ironically,
though, I DON'T drink coffee. No one else, though, makes a better
Italian soda, and the food here is first rate. But the people....THAT
is why one sojourns to the Plantation. Watching the people wander
by, or interact here, on a weeknight or weekend, is always amusing
and entertaining. From wandering preachers to high school kids
to businessmen to college students to the infamous Mill rats
to tourists to poets to musicians to just strange people who often
defy classification. Best free entertainment on Mill, if you
ask me.

| International House Of Pancakes | Tempe, AZ | |
|
As a student, there are three reasons to go here.
1. It is economical.
2. After the bars close, somehow this is a good place to come hang.
3. If you are studying late into the night, great place to come
study, get food, and (if you drink it, which I don't) load up on
coffee. Not sure if they still do this, but for quite a while, late
at night, they would have one sectioned designated a study area,
where you pretty much had to be quiet, and they left you alone to
do your thing. It was perfect.

| Blimpie Subs & Salads | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I grew up on Blimpie's in the east, and was always let down by Subway
in the west. When Blimpie's finally expanded westward (this
was the second location to open in the Phoenix area, I think, and
the first *I* knew of), I was overjoyed. The subs kick butt, pure
and simple. Now that I once again live in a town that has a Subway
but no Blimpie's, I miss it all the more.

||
| Souper Salads | Tempe, AZ | |
|
Good place to come eat and study....and they have simply the largest
potato bar I have ever seen....not to mention the largest POTATOS
I have ever seen. (Sorry, Mr. Qyayle, no "e".) Or maybe it was just
that last time I was there....

| Nellos Pizza | Tempe, AZ | |
|
Two words: The BEST! One of the few places I have CONSISTENTLY
taken dates here. Not sure if there is something special in the
pizza, but I do know that a girl I took on a first date here ended
up dating me for about two and a half years. Now, I am not saying
it WAS because of the pizza, but at Nello's, it is so good, it would
not even surprise me. If you tell me you have found better, you
are either a jaded New Yorker or a liar. This place is on a short
list of places in the Phoenix area that I would say is beyond compare.
If you don't go there, you are the one missing out.

| Mama Pizzeria | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I mentioned in another review that there are only a few places
in the Phoenix area that I would say are beyond compare. This is
one of them. This is an ASU tradition that has not gotten beyond
itself. The pizza is good, the toppings are fresh, the happy hour
is friendly, the STAFF is friendly (say hello to Darlene for me...she
runs the best place!), and then....well, then there are the Killer
Calzones. I have been overheard saying that these things are
the size of your head, and while since then I have seen bigger,
I have NEVER had better. Heck, it takes a lot for me to continue
to frequent a business on a regular basis for TEN YEARS (has it
been that long, Dar?), and to be honest, I can't think of any other
one I have frequented that long that often.
Frankly, folks, I the above rating of five stars is a lie. Mama's deserves six. |

| Crocodile Cafe | Tempe, AZ | |
|
Good fare, not great. Good service, not great. Great patio location
(okay, I'm a sucker for patio dining, I'll admit it), but with
all the great food on Mill Avenue, the patio really is the only
reason I could think of to come here on a regular basis. It IS, however,
a pretty safe place to take out-of-towners who might be a bit skittish
about other stuff. Me, I would rather go to Chili's or Ruby Tuesday,
personally.

||
| Los Sombreros Mexican Food & Cocktails | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I do not get here NEARLY often enough! When I am living in Arizona,
though (am not currently), I do like going here....food is top
notch Mexican, with some of the best (and freshly made) chips
and salsa anywhere. Killer ritas, too. It is tough to recommend
something in particular on a menu that you simply cannot go wrong
on. Sometimes it is hard to believe you could find such a wonderful
place in a strip mall like this!

||
| Chili's Grill & Bar | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I have to disagree somewhat with the majority of the reviews here.
Every single time I have eaten here, and there have been many times,
the food has been great, and the service, while perhaps not awesome,
was pretty darn good. Their patio rocks, and their bartenders
are usually pretty friendly (I usually sit at the bar or on the
patio....only rarely do I actually do the dining room). I know
what the former cook said, but to be perfectly frank, I have worked
in restaurants for years, and the fact that I even dine out anymore
is amazing to me, with all that I have seen....so I take my chances.
Be that as it may, this is STILL the only chain restaurant that
consistently knows what "medium rare" means. And, the thing
that puts Chili's over the top for me, to be honest, is that on my
quest for the perfect margarita, Chili's is the ONLY chain restaurant
to crack to Top Ten. Try the Presidente!

| Mill Ave Beer Co | Tempe, AZ | |
|
The people here seem confused, and that is understandable, but
the Mill Ave. Beer Co. is NOT the same place as the Mill Cue Club
(which is right next door). The Cue Club does have plenty of pool,
and pricey beer, and is an alright place to be, but nothing special.
The MABC, on the other hand, has its moments. Sure, when it is busy,
service is a joke...this IS a college town, guys. But, that aside,
they have a GREAT assortment of beer, a truly incredible happy
hour, and some of the best appetizers this side of Heaven. Try
the appetizer dip in the bread bowl. With the right beer, at happy
hour, both your stomache and your wallet will be smiling a big
one!

| Vine Tavern & Eatery | Tempe, AZ | |
|
This place used to be my regular football season Sunday afternoon
game-watching home. Emphasis here is on "used to be." I started
going there because they had cheap, cold beer, cheap, good wings,
cheap, good food, and pretty decent service, as well as lots of
TV's for watching the games, and plenty of football fans. Well,
they still have lots of TV's and fans, and that is about it....the
beer is warm as often as cold, prices have gone up, and up, and up,
and service has gone down, and down, and down. As a regular, I don't
expect to be treated special, but I ALSO don't expect to be treated
rudely...which I have gotten. The last football season I spent
here was the LAST football season I spent here. There are better
places.

||
| Old Chicago Pasta & Pizza | Tempe, AZ | |
|
How can you NOT like a place that puts your name on the wall if you
manage to scarf down every beer on their list? But beyond that,
every time I have eaten here, the food has been excellent. Slow
service? Perhaps, but to be honest, the place is usually so crowded
(at least when I have been there), that the wait for food is not
beyond what should be expected. Some of the best selections of
beer, and some of the oddest beer, under the sun.

||
| Casey Moore's Oyster House At Ninth And Ash | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I would agree with Amy...the other dishes at Casey's are definitely
very good...in my mind, this has always been an Irish restaurant
(despite the "Oyster House" designation), and I have never been
disappointed by their Irish fare. Great place to come hang and
have a beer....when everything is dead on Mill, there is still
a party at Casey's. The trick to the place is knowing how to navigate
the crowds to get to the bathrooms in the back. There IS a secret
to doing it right, but I'LL never tell.

||
| Petes Fish & Chips | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I don't think these people understand what Pete's is all about.
On those days at the end of the month where you are counting your
change in order to eat, you go to Pete's. The food is not great,
and often not that good, really, but you get a lot for very little,
and it is often passable, especially when starvation or more
Ramen are your other options. Besides, when you are on a drunk
weekend, this food is somehow really tasty. (I did say "drunk"
weekend."
|
||
| Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks Restaurant | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I have to agree with the others, the practice of charging extra
for fries is pretty weak, especially with the prices here...and
I don't even LIKE fries, generally speaking! But the burgers
here are wonderful, at least in my experience....and I automatically
like a place that cooks theri burgers medium rare as a default!
And they have ALWAYS gotten my burger the way I wanted it....and
the teriyaki burger is great. Drinks are okay, service is average
or less, and the AC is always on way too cold, but not a bad place
for the occasional bite.
|
||
| Rally's Hamburgers | Tempe, AZ | |
|
I love Rally's, I really do, but why is it that of all the burger
places listed, the Chuck Box is not here? Inconceivable....I
will have to deal with that soon. As for Rally's, always good food,
for fast food....the banana shake is what keeps me coming back
when I am in town.
