Anis Atlanta, GA
We took my mother in law to this place for lunch on her birthday. We started the meal with an appetizer of mussels steamed in garlic/butter/wine sauce. Absolutely some of the best I've ever had ANYWHERE. Both my wife and M-I-L agreed. As an entree I had the garlic roasted chicken and they had the baked sea bass. Both dishes were served at just the right time, hot and presented well. The chicken was fall off the bone tender. Whole roasted garlic cloves were scattered over the meat. A side ragu of vegetables was served as well. I'm not a fan of vegetables cooked that well, but they were tasty. The sea bass was cooked perfectly. The meat flaked well and was not over seasoned. It was topped with some wild greens.
The best part of the meal was the surprise birthday cheesecake torte that the waitress brought to the table. We did not inform her that this was a birthday meal. She simply overheard the birthday toast for the M-I-L and took it upon herself to make this wonderful gesture.
A bonus was that it was very, very good! Cheesecake alternated with spongecake, drizzled with raspberry sauce, large dollops of semi-sweet chocolate sauce and fresh blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. Perfect!
We dined outdoors, at noon, on July 2. Yet it wasn't overly hot or uncomfortable. Not just a great meal, a great experience.
Mangoes Key West, FL
Great atmosphere, outdoor or indoor dining. We took our meal upstairs on the balcony off the bar. Great view of Duval Street. Food was well prepared and served by staff that knew their stuff. A good place to take in the "Key West" attitude while having a great meal.
Crabby Dicks' Key West, FL
OK, this may be a bit one sided. We go there exclusively to eat oysters. And why not? They serve you a dozen for only $3.88!! Best price I've found ANYWHERE. Otherwise, it's just a seafood joint. Several good features: Parking in rear for those who choose to drive (rather than "scooter") around KW. Lots of outdoor balcony tables that overlook Duval.
Service was average. The oysters were great. We didn't eat anything cooked on this trip, but I seem to remember the fish sandwich was pretty good a year ago when we were there last.
Casa Cayo Hueso Restaurant Key West, FL
We had lunch at this place. Our table was outdoors and even though we visited KW in June, the breeze kept the heat at bay. So don't shy away from an outdoor table. We both had a Cuban Sandwich. Mine came with fries and they were typical. My partner had plantain chips and I'm told they were good. We shared a side of fried plantains which were sweet, hot and delicious.
The Cuban sandwiches were as good as I've had anywhere. The service was a bit slow, but maybe not by KW standards. Not a bad place to spend your lunch time.
Mangia Mangia Pasta Cafe Key West, FL
You get a bit tired of conch fritters, chowder and the like so one meal of italian food during your trip is acceptable. We walked in a 10pm when they were breaking down and getting ready to close. However, they welcomed us in, served us promptly and without any of the "what the hell are you doing walking in her when we're about to close" attitude I've experienced elsewhere.
Food was well prepared. The pasta was done perfectly and the sauces well seasoned. Portions ample and if the service was good when we visited, I'm sure it's great during normal dining hours.
Camille's Restaurant Key West, FL
Very small place but the food is amazing. Known best for the breakfast. We had lunch. The blue cheese bacon burger is probably the best I've ever had. The omlette my partner had was absolutely amazing. Spinich, shrimp, onions, peppers, cheese and some other things came together to produce fantastic tastes. Not overdone. The multi-grain toast was loaded with butter and quite tasty.
The only downside was the slow service. Otherwise it's a must do if you've got the time.
Sushi-Huku Japanese Restaurent Atlanta, GA
Yes, this IS one of the best places for sushi in all of Atlanta.
It's not really in Atlanta proper. Really closer to the Smyrna/Marietta area. Regardless, worth the trip. Reservations are highly recommended!!
Service is attentive without being bothersome. I swear the fish is so fresh that I think once I saw a piece wiggle on the rice.
Price is what you'd expect at an exceptional sushi restaurant. Atmosphere can be a bit noisy during busy times, but at others it's very quite.
I think every charge card except maybe Sears is accepted.
Yen Jing Chinese Restaurant Atlanta, GA
This is the place I take all my out of town friends for Asian food.
I've never been disappointed with the serice or the food. Portions would feed an army. One entree can easily serve 2, maybe 3 average people. Especially if you start with pot-stickers or the like.
Language barrier can be a problem, but patience is the key.
This is a great place to feed a crew if you're on a budget.
Varsity Atlanta, GA
An Atlanta institution. Unique fast food the likes to be found no where else.
Simple food, served quickly, by people who would rather be somewhere else. You must try the F/O. That's Frosted Orange. Kinda like a chilled baby asprin that you drink. It's so good it's worth the ice cream head-ache you'll get from drinking it so fast.
Not to be missed while in Hot-lanta
Vortex Atlanta, GA
Hands Down, the best burger in Atlanta. Thick, greasy and hot. Plus, they'll cook it rare for you if you want!
Atmosphere is funky, waitstaff is fun and the beer/liquor selection is extensive. Hey you gotta love a place that not only has Hard Apple Cider, but Pear Cider (Perry) as well.
I prefer the Little 5 Points location since the original Vortex moved from West Peachtree, but the food is consistant no matter which location you visit.
Weekends Atlanta, GA
this place has closed.....
Taco Cabana Atlanta, GA
Good cheap Mexican fare. Open 24 hours, outdoor tables, plus 1.99 margaritas. (they could use an extra tequila boost, but for under 2 bucks I can argue).
All the food is good. The condiment bar allows you to kick up the heat if you want.
There is usually a 5-7 min wait on all but the most simple of dishes, but when you get your order it's hot and freshly made.
A great alternative to the Waffle House or Krystal for that late-nite post bar eating binge.
Tasty Town Grill Atlanta, GA
Much to my dismay, urban renewal took it's toll on this great little diner. It's CLOSED..... :<(
Nuevo Laredo Cantina Atlanta, GA
THE best Mexican in the entire Metro Atlanta area.
Authentic dishes prepared in authentic ways. The mole' is fantastic! Prices are reasonable and the portions are generous.
My only complaint is that reservations are not accepted unless you have a party of 6 or more. This means that if it's just you and your honey, there is usually a wait. And the wait can be as long as 45 min.
It IS worth it, so get a basket of chips, add some salsa and a margarita or two and get to know those around you who already know just how good this mexican food really is.
Biscuit Bucket Rome, GA
Outside of my own grandmother, the Biscuit Bucket DOES have some of the best southern biscuits I've had in my 40 years on the planet. Nothing fancy, just good Georgia breakfast at a small town price. They even have fried bologna on a biscuit. Just try getting that at your local fast-food mega chain. Besides, most of the women who work there remind me of my own family and that makes the grub taste even better!
Partridge Cafe Rome, GA
This place has been a tradition for most Romans for longer than I've been alive.
Nothing fancy, nothing strange. Just good southern cooked meats-n-vegetables like you'd get back home.
Menus are still just mimographed (I didn't even know they still had those machines) sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 paper. You circle your choices on the sheet and hand them in to your server just like a test in elemetary school.
You get what you want, piping hot and plenty of it.
There can be a crowd on Sunday after church, so be ready to hang around and chew the fat with your neighbor while you wait on a seat.
Elizabeth On Thirty Seventh Savannah, GA
It's been about a year since the wife and I had the pleasure of taking a meal at this historic home turned resturant. While the details of each item on our table have faded, the memory of the entire experience is branded into my brain.
The waitstaff was right on time with our courses and we never wanted for anything. The particular waiter who served us recommended a wine with dinner that was in a word, perfect.
On our next trip to Savannah this place WILL see us again.
Pearl's Elegant Pelican Savannah, GA
This place is a "never miss" for us when we're in Savannah.
The value is great, the food plentiful and the quality of the seafood is superior.
We usually start with at least a dozen oysters and then move on to the steamed Alaskan crab combo. Lots of crab, shrimp, potato and corn. Not a fancy place, but being in the atmosphere of other seafood lovers really just kinda makes you want to smile.
The "hush-puppies" are a delight as well.
Teeple's Savannah, GA
On recommendation from a local we stopped in this place for lunch. The place is a bit road diner-ish with it's wooden chairs and tables with the hole in the middle for your seafood cast offs.
The food wasn't as great as I've had in other "we catch 'em" seafood places, but it wasn't bad either. We felt like we got our money's worth, but not much more. Probably not a place we'll seek out next trip to Savannah.
Wet Willie's Savannah, GA
If you're going to this place for food you'd better not. It's a bar. Nothing more, nothing less.
But it is a bar with a specialty. And since the place is a bar, the specialty is drinks. But not just any drinks. The drinks are the slushy frozen high alcohol content kind. You know the ones that will give you a ice-cream head-ache one minute and make you forget your name the next. Yeah.
Don't expect to drive for a while after a visit here.
Atmosphere is, well, like a bar. Bar-keeps are friendly, willing to let you sample the more hard to imagine fruit flavor combinations of drinks and not hard on the eyes either.
If you're on River Street, you'll want to at least drop by for a taste.
