Ramblas San Francisco, CA
Everything on the menu is delicious! Go with a bunch of people and order lots of stuff to share. Note that although the average entree price is low, this is tapas so the plates are not meant to each constitute a full meal. Paellas, which are larger, are $12-15. The sangria is delicious. I'm not a beer drinker, but my friends seemed to like it. The desserts are great, especially the Sangria Sorbet. They also serve brunch, which I haven't tried it.
Marina Gourmet Coffee Mill Alameda, CA
Marina Gourmet is a family-run business. They serve coffee, espresso, etc. (including their own special blends and beans by the pound). In fact, they pretty much sell everything Starbucks does, but they do it better and more personally. At lunchtime, they serve a variety of sandwiches. And they cater for the offices in the surrounding area.
Sushi Sue Alameda, CA
This tiny place is hard to find if you don't know where to look for it. If there is any sign outside at street level, I haven't seen it.
My friend and I had the opportunity to have the place to ourselves. We just asked the chef to serve us whatever he thought was good, and we had a wonderful dinner.
Miramar Beach Inn Half Moon Bay, CA
I enjoyed the food here very much. It was a bit expensive, but it was worth it. I disagree with those who had negative things to say about the chowder. I quite liked it. I also enjoyed the Prawns Etoufee. I don't usually drink, but I like Malibu and pineapple juice, which is hard to get because most bars don't stock Malibu. So I was delighted to find that the bar at Miramar does stock it and I got to enjoy my favorite drink!
Milano Emeryville, CA
Excellent Italian food. Your meal comes with garlic and pizza bread. All the food is great, and the desserts are scrumptious.
Jersey Joe's Belmonte, CA
If you grew up in New Jersey and you miss the subs you used to get there (on big bread, with seasoned oil and vinegar, etc.), this is the place to go. You can even get tastycakes and birch beer. The one thing I feel they're missing is black cherry soda.
Fatapple's Berkeley, CA
Great burgers (your choice of several cheese) and wonderful breakfasts.
Kamakura Restaurant Alameda, CA
The best Japanese in Alameda (and probably Oakland too). Great sushi and other Japanese cuisine. Tell them it's your birthday and Faith will personally serve you free green tea ice cream and an apple sliced to look like a swan (also, she'll take your picture).
Skates On The Bay Berkeley, CA
This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants. I've loved everything I've ever eaten here and the service is always wonderful.
Freight & Salvage Coffee House Berkeley, CA
Not really a restaurant, but the best place to see folk music in the East Bay. They do sell refreshments, including a wide variety of teas, Pete's coffee, and snacks, such as lemon bars, focaccio, pretzels, cookies, peanuts, pecan bars, and knishes, which are all delicious.
Mandarin Garden Berkeley, CA
My favorite Chinese restaurant in the East Bay. The service is very friendly, especially Anita who does most of it, but sometimes it's a bit slow if they're busy. You can order just about anything you want, even if you don't see it on the menu ("Anita, I'm in the mood for prawns today." "I can make it with broccoli or asparagus. Do you want it spicy?") I recommend the sizzling rice soup, my favorite way to start off dinner here.
Magic Wok Alameda, CA
This is not a classy place by any means, but if you want a quick, cheap lunch, it's not too bad. I like the "regular meal" which includes a choice of soups, fried won tons, egg roll, one entree (from a short list), and rice or chow mein, for $3.75+tax. In fact, the won ton soup and the chow mein are pretty good and quite satisfying.
Peony Restaurant Oakland, CA
It's true that there are not enough desert things, but I disagree about the quality and creativity. Every time I go there, I find something new.
