| House of Nan King | San Francisco, CA | |
|
Some of the best food I've ever tasted. I could care less
whether it's "authentic" or not. And BTW I DID see several
Asian customers both times I went. That's right, both times.
My wife and I liked it so much we went back the next day.
It's very easy to get a seat around 2:30 p.m. Here are the
standouts:
Pot Stickers (a must have)
Fried Squids (no fishy taste, delicious sauce)
Onion cake
Fried Prawns in Tsing Tao sauce (melts like butter)
Nan King Beef
We didn't have as much luck with the Chicken in Tsing Tao
sauce. We'll definitely be back. Just writing this review
has started my mouth watering.

Only had breakfast there and it was good, but nothing to
go out of your way for. The Hollondaise sauce on the Eggs
Benedict was tasty; but they got a little cute with the
new potatoes. They tasted more like rosemary than like
potatoes.

| Don Joses Mexican Restaurant | Laguna Hills, CA | |

Pretty good Mexican food of the El Torito variety with
slightly better prices.

| Hams Country Cookery | Mission Viejo, CA | |
|
Unless it's changed in the last month, this location is a
Coco's restaurant. It hasn't been a Ham's Country Cookery
for about 10 years (and more's the pity). I think there's
a Ham's in Santa Ana just North of South Coast Plaza.

| Magic Pan Restaurant | Santa Ana, CA | |

Pretty good food. All of the entrees are wrapped in crepes,
sort of like a French burrito. But if you want a real taste
treat, just order a couple of appetizers: the cheese balls
(I'm not sure what their official name is) and the Potage
St. Germain (EXCELLENT pea soup with a dollop of sour cream
and a miniature flask of sherry to mix in). It'll set you
back 6 or 7 dollars and you'll still need dinner afterwards,
but your taste buds will thank you.

| Taco Mesa | Mission Viejo, CA | |
|
Kind of a combination of the standard Mexican Taco Shop
and restaurant Mexican. They serve good Mexican food of
the sort you can get at an El Torito; but $5 gets you
more than you can eat.

| Alberto's | Mission Viejo, CA | |
|
Excellent Mexican taco shop of the sort where $5 gets
you more than you can eat. Standouts are the Cheese
Enchiladas (under $3 for two and they're bigger than
you get in an El Torito), Rolled Tacos with Guacamole,
and the Chips with Guacamole (again, under $3 gets you
a generous helping of chips and enough guacamole to last
until the final chip is eaten and you're running your
fingers arounnd the edges and licking them).

Actually 3 1/2 to 4 stars, just to avoid grade inflation.
Good sandwiches and wood-fired pizzas and GENEROUS
portions. You will take food home with you (unless you
order a pizza). For pizza I recommend the 4 cheese pizza,
and for a sandwich I recommend the roast beef dip. It's
like a regular beef dip sandwich but they slip a large
ortega chili in there that really jazzes up the taste.
