| Super Taqueria Restaurants | San Jose, CA | |

The food is average (for mexican), and the atmosphere is below
average. I can't imagine gicing this place 5 stars, unless one
believes McDonalds is a 4 or 5 star restaurant.

| Henry's World Famous Hi-Life | San Jose, CA | |
|
When I first moved to San Jose 10 years ago, I really
enjoyed this restaurant. They have a "Wisconsin
Tavern" kind of feeling, where you order your food
from the bar, and then wait in the bar until it's
ready, at which time they seat you.
Their steak used to be good quality USDA choice, and
reminded me of beef in the midwest. Not any more.
The last two times I was there, (separated by 2 years)
it was so bad I couldn't finish my steak. The salad
was chunks of iceberg lettuce, with so much water in
the salad bowl the dressing was diluted. The potatoes
tasted like they had been half cooked a few days prior,
and barely re-heated.The steaks had so much fat and
gristle, that over 1/2 the tables were complaining,
rather loudly, to an indifferent staff and management.
I can't imagine ever going back.

| Deezi Cafe | San Jose, CA | |
|
If you like family style persian food, this place is for you.
Their koubideh ( ground hamburger kabobs ), filet kabobs,
and boneless chicken kabobs are very good. I usually also
get an order of torshi (persian assorted pickles), and yogurt
with pepper and cucumber (to dip bread in).
They also have a soup/stew that is quite unusual, and slightly
sweet. I enjoy it, but don't recall it's name.

| Yiassoo | Campbell, CA | |
|
Their gyros were so greasy the 2 times I was there, as were
the fried, that I couldn't finish them.
Their chicken lemon soup tastes like water, with cornstarch,
a few grains of instant rice tossed in, and a vague hint of
lemon (I didn't taste the chicken stock at all).
This place is definately a place to avoid.

| La Maison Du Cafe | Los Gatos, CA | |
|
What an absolute delight this place is, and I discovered it
because of the ratings here !
The restaurant is small, with a high ceiling. A friend of mine
and I went there for lunch today. We had the daily special,
which included a lovely salad of butter lettuce, mushrooms,
crumbled bacon, and herbs in a light vinagrette. The main
course was blue grouper in a white wine demi-glaze with fresh
herbs and fresh tomatoes, snow peas (some of the sweetest I've
ever tasted, blanched to perfection) and rice. The fish was
cooked until it almost flaked, but not quite, the sauce was
perfectly executed, it was an excellent meal.
The service was outstanding, well executed and casual. The
chef/owner came out to great us towards the end of the meal,
and was genuinely happy when we complimented his food.
We were both delighted to have found this place, and will be back
often. Dinners are more expensive, in the $15-$25 dollar
range, but well worth it I suspect.

| Crepe Danielle | Saratoga, CA | |
|
If you enjoy crepes, this restaurant is for you ! Their salads
are always light yet tasty, their french onion soup is passable,
and their crepes are wonderful, plus you have the option of
white flour, whole wheat, or buckwheat crepes. My favorite
is their beef bourginoin (sp) crepe, its outstanbding, with
just the right amount of vegetables, in a savoury sauce.

| Valerianos Ristorante | Los Gatos, CA | |
|
One of the finest italian restaurants I have ever eaten at.
Their appetizer plates ( anti-pasto, goat cheese-roasted-garlic-
roasted red bell pepper to name some ) are simple in concept,
but elegant and delicious.
I've never had a disappointing meal in the 10+ times I have
eaten at this restaurant. The service is also excellent, and
friendly. It is more expensive than your average ma & pa italian
place, and that's because it is so far above them.

| Crow's Nest | Santa Cruz, CA | |
|
The main reason so many people like this place is the location.
It does have a nice view of the harbor. Drinks are ok, food
is ok (their caesar salad and spicy chicken wings are good),
but the management is some of the worst I've ever seen.
Once I was there with a friend to have cocktails and horse'-
douvres, and we went onto the patio. During that time,.they
started shooting for a commercial. For over an hour, no
waitress came, and when we tried to leave, a bouncer told us
(and other people on the outside patio) that he couldn't allow
us to leave since we might "trip" over the wires and cords
being used in the recording process. It wasn't until I got the
manager to come over, and informed him I would shout over the
sides of the balcony for the police that we were allowed to
leave. Other customers on the balcony also immediately left.

| Chowpatti Vegetarian Resaurant | Arlington Heights, IL | |
|
Before moving to California 10 years ago I would go here every
week. I still make a point of always stopping in when visiting
family.
They have an innovative menu of vegetarian entrees, I especially
love their bhel puri with cucumber & tomato, and their samosas.
The service is slow, but that's because they prepare everything
ala' minute, ie, when you order it.

||
| Le Titi de Paris | Arlington Heights, IL | |
|
Easily the finest restaurant I have ever eaten at. We had a
seven course meal that was superbly prepared and presented. The
staff is the most professional I have ever encountered.
When I visited Chicago 2 years ago and went there, their ahi
appetizer was the best I have ever had, and that includes
California where I live, and Hawaii.

| Sea Cloud | Santa Cruz, CA | |
|
For the best seafood on the wharf, go to the Sea Cloud. Their
mussels, korean style, in a ginger/pesto/seafood broth, are the
best I've ever had, and I've had them there 5-6 times. They
also have some of the best crab cakes I've ever had.
Try their lobster in phyllo packages, in a light cream sauce,
extremely well executed, and the lobster isn't overcooked.
For salads, the warm duck salad with goat cheese is wonderful.
Don't go there for steak, you'll be disappointed, this place
is for seafood lovers.

| Pearl Alley Bistro | Santa Cruz, CA | |
|
If overpriced, poorly prepared food, served by indifferent,
sloven waiters, with overpriced wine is your idea of fun, this
place is perfect for you !
They do have a nice selection of wines by the glass, but boy do
you pay for them. Their food looks intriguing on the menu,
and is very disappointing when it arrives, either burnt, or
greasy.
The only reason they received 2 stars was because of their wide
selection of (overpriced) wines by the glass.
|
||
| Balzac Bistro | Capitola, CA | |
|
The nicest wine bar I have ever been to ( keep in mind I have
never been to France ). They usually have about 20 wines / ports
to choose from by the glass, at reasonable prices.
I have never had dinner there, but always get 1-3 appetizers,
usually a pate, and whatever special they happen to have, The
appetizers aren't remarkable, but they are good, and go very
well with their wines.

||
| Striper Lounge & Restaurant | Rio Vista, CA | |
|
Whenever I go camping / boating in the area, I always go there
for breakfast at least once. The food is average, but a lot
better than anyplace else I've eaten in that town. Their
biscuits & gravy, however, is the best I've ever had in a
restaurant.
|
||
| The Ganges | San Francisco, CA | |
|
Easily the best indian food, and the best vegetarian food
I have ever eaten. I always get their full thali, and have
never been disappointed. The portions are smaller than other
indian restaurants, but then, the finest french restaurants
also give small portions.
Their banana curry (which is NOT a curry like any thai or
indian restaurant that I have ever tasted) is unique and
delicious.
|
||
| Pigalle | Los Gatos, CA | |
|
Their $10 or $12 lunch special is always a bargain, as is their
$15 or $20 dinner special, which includes either soup or salad
(both of which they excel in, I've never once seen iceberg
lettuce in their salads,) dinner entree with starch and veggies,
and dessert.
All of their appetizers are excellent, and their french onion
soup is one of the best I've ever had. Try their fillet mignon,
loin of lamb in lavender sauce, and their stuffed quail (which
is not on the menu, but often a special).
|
||
| Gervais | Saratoga, CA | |
|
They consistantly have been an excellent restaurant. I
recommend their ostrich / emu appetizer ( they were both
special appetizers the last few times I was their ), and all
of their duck entrees - they are one of the few restaurants that
can properly prepare duck.
|
||
| Sent Sovi | Saratoga, CA | |
|
I always get their prix fix menu, and have never been dis-
appointed. I particularly like their fish entrees, and their
desserts. Their fruit soup as delicious and innovative.
|
||
| The Plumed Horse | Saratoga, CA | |
|
Every time I go there, I always end up saying that it's the most
fun fine dining I've ever had. I have been to better restaur-
ants, but nver had a better time.
The service is always polite, friendly, and has a sense of
humor (once when I asked a waitress if the person at the next
table was Susan Hammer, mayor of San Jose, he whispered it into
her ear, and she and her husband laughed, and sent a drink to
my table ! Everyone there seems to have a good time)
I highly recommend their venison and lamb, easily the finest
I have ever had, always with expertly prepared sauces. They
also have an extensive, and reasonable wine list.
|
||
| Cafe Sparrow | Aptos, CA | |
|
The best restaurant in Santa Cruz county.
I love their fondue, home-made pate, and their duck
with a red onion marmelade.
They also have a prix fix menu for $20 that gives you
several choices, including a bottle of David Bruce wine
for only $10.
Wine prices are reasonable, service is friendly and
prompt, and the restaurant is extremely quaint.
