It has a (generally) hip clientele and great food. The service is on
the snooty side. You must have oysters at Zuni and, while some people
thing the Caesar Salad is overhyped,

Zuni has to be the most misunderstood restaurant in San Francisco.
You simply cannot go there expecting the same old same old. Every
lunch and every dinner they have a few dishes that are there always
and a few that might not be on the menu again for a year or two. You
have to accept that your choices will be limited. And if you're
adventurous and try something new you might not like it. But then
again, you might taste something you will remember for years
with great pleasure. Personally, I don't care for the chicken
(one-hour wait, so only order it if you have having first courses).
But many people love it.

Zuni's ingredients are always the best available. It's
almost the only place I'll order oysters because their selection
and handling practices can't be beat. The Caesar Salad is
100% authentic, complete with raw egg, anchovy bits, and lots
of garlic. The desserts are fantastic (try the espresso granita').
And the wine list will punish your pocketbook, because they have
such a well-chosen selection of champagne and dessert wines,
whiskies and single malts, etc. The by-the-glass wines (be warned!)
are food wines and will not impress so much if you drink them without
eating.

Judy Rodgers is still the head chef and owner. Watch the staff
work like a well-oiled machine and you'll see she's
still in top form. In recent years, the service has become excellent
and unobtrusive.
<br>
And by all means, outside of dinner, try a thin-crust pizza there.

Zuni is extremely over-rated, the level of service is
unacceptable and the quality of the is poor. This restaurant has changed ownership and is not the same restaurant. Do
NOT recommend!!! Avoid or you will be sorry. A bad day at
a fast food restaurant is better than a good day at Zuni.

I must be missing something because I though Zuni was terrible.
I went with a group of 10 and maybe one person had something
decent. I shared the roasted chicken with another person and
that is all it was chicken. There was very little else served.
Few to no veggies or anything else.
It was also loud and crowded. Very dissapointing.
I won't be going back.

Zuni gets 5 stars from me for being one of the great spiritual and
culinary centers of San Francisco. Sure there are the celebs and the
beautiful people, but Zuni doesn't discriminate either. Most of the
servers are telepathic, and know exactly when to approach and when to
stay away; one of the kindest, most responsive restaurants anywhere.
The food is genuine and simple, sometimes strikingly so - and it's
often an experiment, which on occasion doesn't work. But it almost
always does, and the results can be beatific (who'd a thunk of putting
prosciutto around persimmons, and tossing some tiny onion slices on
top?). It's a comfortable, familiar yet elegant place, and there's
nothing better in the city than arriving there late on a rainy night
without reservations, having some Kumamoto oysters and champagne at
the bar, then getting seated and having a hamburger with gorgonzola
(not on the evening menu, but served after 10 pm).
