Steaks were great, other food was fair, service was terrible. <br>
Granted, we were a walk-in on a Friday evening. Still, we would
have been better off eating at the bar than on the wobbly card table
they put us at. (I finally had to ask the waiter for a couple matchbooks
to put under one of the legs.)
<br>
Then they got our orders confused with those of another table.
And struggled to sort them out.
<br>
Then it was impossible to get a second round of warm bread. (Oh,
the bread was good, too.)
<br>
The side orders of vegetables were only fair -- potatoes au gratin
looked and tasted like they were covered with Velveeta, and creamed
spinach was very mushy (Harris', for example, manages to
squeeze some of the moisture out so that it's not a drippy
mess). Caesar salad was OK.
<br>
They seemed to have plenty of staff but could not give us a good
experience. We won't be back. We can get great steaks in the
$30-40 range elsewhere, where everything else is up to par.

Yes, it's expensive...but it's worth it. I've
eaten at Ruth's
Chris all across the US, and it is consistently excellent. The
filet mignon, the new york strip, and the t-bone are all great.
As for the butter...well at first I thought it was crazy, but it
really brings out the meat flavor. However, I do find that I need
to balance this out with more low-fat side dishes (plain baked
potato works great).
Granted, there are better steakhouses across the country, but
you can count on Ruth's for a consistently excellent meal.
I love the chocolate sin dessert, too.

This place is excellent. I went there for a birthday dinner, sort
of afraid of how much it would cost and how the service would be.
The entire time we were there, we received outstanding service.
Our waitress was extremely helpful, all the recommended items
that we tried were delicious. The steaks were tender and flavorful
and the lobster was wonderful. They also allow you to bring in
your own bottle of wine for $15 corkage, which I think is worth
it considering the wine list prices. Our bill came to $200, which
included a pricey appetizer ($28), 2 steaks, 1 added lobster,
2 glasses of wine, dessert and after dinner drinks. I would highly
recommend this place to anyone who wants a special night out.

Food is OK, not great. Dress code enforcement is low. Comparing
the decor / furnishings (****), the price (***1/2), the service
(***), and the quality of the food (**), you come up with a discrepancy.
The price and decor would be in keeping with a restaurant of high
quality. The service, moderate quality. The food quality a bit
better than Sizzler. The dress code about equal to Sizzler.
In short, of the four steak restaurants which I have been to (Sizzler,
Ruth's, Harris', and Izzy's), this would be my least favorite.

The five-star rating is for the filet mignon. It is aged corn-fed beef which is broiled at 1800 degrees and served on a hot platter of sizzling butter. If you came to Ruth'sChris for the atmosphere, entrees, deserts, or seafood, then you can look elsewhere for finer dining. If you don't like butter, then you might try some of the finer French restaurants which often have excellent sauces. But if you like the flavor of steak with butter, salt, and pepper, thenI recommend that you try Ruth's Chris. Many reviewers made jokes about hearing the arteries harden.One plus is that I have stopped eating plain steak since eating here. San Diego, San Francisco, Honolulu, Austin,Dallas ... all the same great steak. It is expensive asmany people mentioned because everything is a la carte.How much did you expect to pay for the best steak ever?I think the keys to their success are:* The 1800 degree broiler. If at all possible, I hope to one day own an 1800 degree broiler. I have tried and it is just not possible for me to seal in juices like they do with their super-broiler. I'm not sure if any other steak houses have them -- I'm sure that most don't.* Sizzling platters (like fajitas from Chili's). You can brand yourself on these platters. Food is just more appealing when it is hot and you can be sure that your steak is hot.* Medium rare. These guys have made medium rare into an art. It is difficult to do with thick cuts of meat like the filet. I am amazed that they can do it so consistently.For reference, I think that Masa's is the best place I have eaten at. I also like the Filet de Boeuf aux Cinq Poivres (filet in sauce of cream, brandy, and five peppercorns) at Rue de Paris -- note though the restaurant received fairly poorreviews.

How in the world could anyone like this place, unless s/he
were getting paid to like it? The service is spotty at
best and the food is mediocre.

I tried it on the the recommendations of prior reviews in
this section. I wish I had not! Pretty bad in the
food category. But, if your are more interested in decor
and hype than food -- this is your place for sure.
