There are several Blue Mesa Grill locations in the Dallas Metroplex,
and the one listed here, the one on Belt Line is the least interesting
of the lot. It is housed in a typical Mexican restaurant-style
building while the others are arty and modern.
The food is consistently great at all of them, however, but my
favorite location is the one at 7700 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas,
conveniently located in a shopping center on the southwest corner
of Northwest Highway and I-75 (Central Expressway), right next
to the Cheesecake Factory, which, inexplicably, gets a lot more
traffic than Blue Mesa does. The decor at this second floor haven
is golden and modern with a remarkably untired Southwest arty
flavor.
I also really like the decor at the location in Frisco, a suburb
north of Dallas, at the northeast corner of Dallas Tollway and
Highway 121, in a stand-alone building. The decor is very modern
with lots of glass and lime green vinyl. Even though it's
15 miles across town from me, I occasionally have the urge to drive
there just because I love the century modern surroundings.
But the main thing that keeps Blue Mesa in the top position of my
list of Dallas restaurants is the food and service. Their guacomole
is made tableside and is the very best I've had anywhere.
Before you order, they will bring out the things that make this
restaurant really special: their sweet potato chips, blue and
yellow corn chips, and two spectacular salsas. The rosy/green
salsa is a fire roasted salsa that is unlike anything you have
ever tasted before. The flavor is just perfect with the seasoned
sweet potato chips, and has become my favorite food in the world.
The other salsa is a chunky red salsa that is great for flavoring
most of the dishes.
This is southwest cuisine. Do not go there if you're in the
mood for gloppy Tex-Mex fare. Though they do have enchiladas
on the menu, they are the one thing I do not recommend, as they are
not what most people think of when they are in the mood for heavy
Mexican food. Instead, you cannot go wrong by ordering one of
the three samplers on the menu. 80 percent of the time, that is
what I order as my main dish.
Their Mesa Sampler is my favorite. It has chicken nachos made
with their wonderfully flavorful black beans, chicken taquitos,
and quesadillas made with cheeses and caramalized onions, which
makes all the difference. Also included on the plate is jalapeno
relish, which is outstanding on the quesadillas; sour cream
for the nachos; and two dipping sauces, barbeque and avacado
for the taquitos. It's the best 11 bucks you'll ever
spend on food!
There are two other samplers, the Southwest Sampler, which comes
with a chicken filled chili relleno, quesadillas, and a chicken
filled sweet corn timbale. On the plate is corn relish, which
is great with everything, and the jalapeno relish.
The third sampler has grilled meat on skewers, pan bread and other
items.
Blue Mesa is a safe place to take a meat lover. Notice that "Grill"
is part of the name. They serve up wonderfully flavored beef,
chicken and seafood as well, for those who prefer a less exotic
plate. Fajitas are special here as well since they have so many
relishes available to use on them.
Another favorite of mine is their Southwest Chicken Salad, which
is spring greens piled on a big piece of pan bread, smeared with
well seasoned black beans and tossed in their fabulous chili
nut dressing, topped with avacado slices and grilled chicken.
Service has always been friendly and well above average at Blue
Mesa. The best of their staff anticipate your needs. Dress ranges
from dressy to dress casual. This place is so uptown though that
it always amazes me when people dress casual and/or bring their
loud children there. But overall, it is much less noisy and more
adult than most of Dallas' finest.
And one more thing, Blue Mesa has the best Sunday champagne brunch
buffet in town. Many of their menu items, plus exotic breakfast
fare, line three walls of the restaurant. Usually Blue Mesa is
nowhere nearly as crowded as it deserves to be, but on Sundays,
you will have some wait time to be seated unless you come early
or late. I believe the brunch is from 10:30 or 11:00 to 2:00.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do -- at least weekly!
