You can tell by the way it smells that the food is fresh and home-made. Their best meal is the carnitas, although simple meals like the enchiladas should have a little more garnish. The environment is friendly and family oriented with plenty of space for large gatherings. The service is good and the restaurant is easy to find in down town Columbus. This is a Good Enough 2 Eat! less

MsKatie   -   When Jim Higgins, the founder of this restaurant was alive, nothing could come close to the quality of food, service, and cleanliness of this restaurant. Since then, the restaurant has changed hands twice, and it gets a little worse each time. The cleanliness is still there. Make no mistake, you won't find a cleaner restaurant. The service is not as good, but it still beats most restaurants in this region. The service is fast 90 percent of the time, but the "aw shucks" persona is grating, and there are a few servers who will literally stand at your table and try to have a long conversation with you while you're eating. ("Nancy," you're one of them.) That's not good -- unless I'm seated alone, I would rather be talking to my dinner partner(s) than a stranger. The hokey habit of singing "The Old Gray Mare" as a birthday serenade is beyond grating and should be dropped entirely. The food. Well, it doesn't compare to when Mr. Higgins was alive. He made sure that everything was fresh and top-quality, and some of the prices reflected that (e.g., crab legs). Most people don't mind paying for quality, but in the past year or so, the quality of the food has dropped, and the prices have risen. To be fair, there are some great food items on the menu. My husband says the fried oysters are superb, and I personally like the charbroiled chicken. The fried shrimp is excellent, though a bit greasy sometimes, and the macaroni and cheese is divine. Hubby and I both like the crab cakes as well, and those aren't even shown on the menu. The salad bar is always fresh and well-stocked, and the dessert bar is heaven on a heating element. There is also free soft-serve ice cream. On the other hand, a seafood restaurant in rural Mississippi should have catfish that is above reproach, and that isn't the case here. I don't know whether the new owners have changed suppliers and gotten worse quality fish, or whether they simply can't cook it well, but the fried catfish is mushy and flavorless. It's also greasy most of the time. The boiled shrimp is seasoned beautifully, but no amount of seasoning can disguise the flavor of shrimp that has been sitting in a freezer for months. The $12/half-lb. price doesn't make it more endearing either. Actually, the seafood in general has dropped in quality. It's a shame, but your better bet is steak or chicken, not fish or shrimp. The chicken is reliably good, and the steaks are sometime marvelous. At a minimum, they are tasty. Pontotoc County has a dearth of restaurants, so we'll continue going to Seafood Junction for now, but we'd have lot more enthusiasm about it if the quality of the food and "quality" of the prices were more proportional. Jim Higgins made it work, and so can the new owners, if only they'll try. less

They've been here forever. It's based conveniently downtown, moderately priced and nice service. The menu I was presented with was about what you'd expect. There's a lot of history on the walls; if you're a native, you should go at least once. Parking is a bitch. But compared to downtown Atlanta, I guess it's not that bad. The fact is that I've lived here my whole life, I'm solidly in the middle class, and yet Weidman's is "That restaurant downtown that only downtown people go to and ... what do they serve, again?" I'd love to advertise it as a local favorite but ... well, it's just *not* a local favorite. It's basically the downtown Applebee's except Applebee's is cheaper and better. less
